I hope it would be I’d love to see them live

My first listen and I didn't gel with this one. But this live really brought it up. The whole show was to an empty room, beginning of covid, and he still went 150%. (Venues were closed, heavy restrictions) The songs surrounding this were harrowing, Kyo was in his own internal space. I was scared watching it. As for "safe" and "unsafe" vocals, I find safe dull. Lifeless. There's no real pain in that, it becomes a sound or a technique and you can tell. You literally said "that's unsafe". As an artist it misses me how sterile stuff is these days. It's just entertainment and product making. But that's just me. Career musicians need to make bank, not art. Anyway... The studio version and video clip for this is intense. Live and studio is always different beasts and complimentary. Worth a watch. There's a couple of things with kyos actions during songs. I'm not sure about the gut pulling, but striking the hand precedes the line "My hand got caught up in the emotions" or something to that effect. There's also the part where he talks about the clown making flowers bloom and he makes a wrist slash motion. Blooming flowers (particularly red) is a literary device often used to describe blood drops. The blood hits and stars outward looking like blooming flowers. I've read this symbolism many times, one referring to flowers blooming in the snow after a battle basically describing the crystallised blood appearing like flowers. Kyo backs that up with his gesture. Sui*ide is a theme of the video clip too, so there's correlation there. Nothing Kyo does is for the sake of it, never arbitrary. His lyrics are deep and multilayered and while he rarely explains them he gives clues through his performances. The lyrics in this one are amazing, the world of hypocrisy masquerading as "merciful"... You can taste the bitter sarcasm. But there's also an exhortation that while we are born and tamed we can still live free and strive against the coercion of the mindless. ... I wrote an essay... Sorry. Not every diru song will vibe with you immediately. Some might take years, some might never. But there's so much to the band there'll be plenty for you.

Lol not a problem! I enjoyed reading it! What I mean by unhealthy is just going off the basis that two vocalists that I really enjoy did a lot of damage by pushing to hard and now they can’t do everything they used to.. I don’t dislike that he likes to capture the emotion and captivate the audiences by pushing I actually respect it, it just doesn’t sit well with me in the aspect of protecting the voice. I love kyo’s vocals no matter what though

@@moshpitreactions I lost my range by simply not speaking for years. I lose my voice after talking to someone for a couple of hours now. Humans are fragile creatures. Lol. I understand the idea behind it, but sometimes raw primal pain is better for the art, and better for the soul. As long as it's not all the time, and there's aftercare. We probably agree ;)

Oh for sure I agree! As a vocalist as well I protect my voice but that’s because I don’t perform at his level on a stage. I think if I was to be a star like him I’d probably start pushing myself a bit more

Read the lyrics directly during and after he pulls his guts out. He says what it is right then. Just remember that his lyrics are metaphoric and sometimes double entendre and then translated. Its always in riddles.

There is an original video to this song, and even on it, Kyo (he chose his name a short for Kyo-to or Kyoto Japan; hi real name is other). Even in the original video Kyo acts weird. The videos of the band, are not your regular videos, but most of them are like small stories. Like someone explained, this live was performed behind closed doors without audience due to covid restrictions. The performance was streamed around the world. It was Kyo's idea to do the performance to be able and get money for the staff that were not working at the time. The band did the performance for free. Toshiya (bass player, looked upset cause he already wanted to do live performances and touring, but it was not possible). There are interviews to the band members before the performance and it has translations on it. The way Kyo acts sometimes on stage, is due to the lyrics. The clown make up, is to match part of the lyrics if this particular song. The part in which he stomps on something, he actually he is pulling his emotions out of his chest and stomping on them and trying to get rid of them. Is like when someone is hurt and they decide to not care and the only was by doing so, is by getting rid of the feelings you had for the other individual/s that's the only way it does not hurt to be hurt.

Kyo's real name is Hironori Nishimura.

I think I don't need to mention again how much I love this song - I'm doing so right now anyway XD This honestly grew to be my favorite Dir en grey song after hearing it live. The song that preceded this one during the live is Ranunculus and the two songs flow perfectly together. While The World of Mercy was released as a stand alone single it was promoted as the track to close the era of The Insulated World [their 10t studio album]. And it works perfectly in that regard I think. One interesting thing to add that I couldn't find in the comments so far is how Kyo used pantomime during this tour as a means of expressing his vocals. In many aspects The Insulated Word can be seen as a sister/brother album to their 2005 album Withering to Death. in which self-harm played a huge part of the stage presentation. The Insulated World is like a mirror world, full of deception, hypocrisy and universal acceptance of the cruelty of men. A world where we can watch people being bullied, beaten and killed and then switch to another channel. Where we know everything that happens around us but don't believe ourselves in a position of acting against it and therefore just shrug it of as something that doesn't concern as personally and therefore is only half-real. So instead of actually hurting himself on stage [as a means of performance art that forces the audience into a position of active voyeurism where they have to SEE the bloodshed and have to be much more conscious about the decision to turn away in order not to see] he used pantomime and metaphorical pictures for this tour which I think represents this mirror-world and puts a bigger focus on the deception we are too eager to accept through [propaganda] media coverage and so on. If the last years since this song was released proofed something then that for a large part of humanity it is easier to believe in a falsified concept then to open our eyes and critically analyse a situation for ourselves - to name one example here: People today find it easier to believe that a murderer must have been mistreated in their childhood and therefore had a reason to act as they did as to accept that some people with terrible childhoods can grow up without any resentment to the world. If we take all mistreated children into account the believe that this is what leads people to commit terrible acts themselves is not sustainable. Looking at every murder, however, shows a far bigger variety of everyday human emotions and mistakes as reasons. By using this narrative we demonize people in order to distance ourselves from them. The same thing is used during every war propaganda. The us vs them mentality that leads to a deep sense of righteousness under which even the most normal person is able to commit the most insane acts of violence. In the end all of that might be connected to a fear of humanity itself. I believe what Kyo did in this interlude can be interpreted in many different ways. Of course the lyrics seem to explain a bit of it but they don't explain why, just before trembling on them, he cradles and kisses his guts, just like a babe. You can certainly interpret that as a love-hate relationship to ones own emotions and aggressions or anything of that kind. My thoughts as I watched this live went into a bit of a different direction. To me it looked like he was mimicking the act of parents or gods. A child/humanity as a part of the [genetic] material of their parents or a god. Birth is an act of violence and love, it's both destructive and creative at the same moment. At the beginning the parents may try to shelter the child [the kissing and cradling] but then they have to let them go into the world where they are stamped upon by people who are just like them [the parents or god act as a a substitute in my interpretation, they stand as part of fate and human creation] . The hand that gets tangled in emotions is everyone's 'hand' [mind or body] which is capable of doing harm.

Dir en grey reactions _does_ sound like a good name for the channel 🤔😂 Mh, I think I have to repeat others who already wrote this but Kyo never hurt himself seriously by screaming and he has never been hospitalised for that. Some people already tried to clear that up but there are always more one-line commentators who don't read interviews and persist on those stories being true. Kyo developed vocal nodule dysphonia after touring non-stop for close to 6 years with some years including over 100 concerts. I worked with a speech pathologists while doing my bachelor's degree and that actually happens to over 40% of people who have to talk loudly on a daily basis and to over 60% of singers at some point in their carriers. As long as they are not cancerous and aren't big enough to impair your speech you can live with nodules just as well as without them but you have to learn to use your voice correctly and keep them from growing bigger, in the long run its best to take a time out and let them heal of course. Although the band really took its time until they could go on hiatus because they had to finish a very long America tour first, Kyo already knew about his condition before he left for that tour and already took every precaution not to worsen his condition. Apparently Doctors told him that he would need to have surgery if the nodules grew much bigger due to the continuous strain so for some time he wasn't sure in which condition he would arrive back home and what would lie ahead. If you _do_ surgery that's an afternoon's affair and you don't even need anaesthetics. There are two ways of going about it, either via micro surgery or laser therapy. Laser therapy can butcher your voice completely, micro surgery takes more time to heal and also changes the voice but a bit more subtly. Kyo obviously didn't do either. Like he said in later interviews, he was treated with medication and speech therapy, took his time to heal and deal with his condition. Even though he keeps screaming like this, nodules haven't become a problem again so I have to think he's doing something right. I also heard some vocal coaches talking about the "intuitive" screams he uses that are indeed similar to a baby's cry and not as unhealthy as they sound. He gives his everything on stage but by now he knows his body inward out and he wants to keep singing as long as possible so if he goes nuts on stage, and he would never stop doing that even to the point of severe discomfort, he knows his muscle memory and training will keep him from doing anything that's _really_ dangerous. About the time frame: "Vinushka" and "Dozing Green" were both released in 2008 (album is UROBOROS), they went on hiatus in early 2012, "The World of Mercy" was released in 2019. But the live versions you watched were filmed in 2017 ("Vinushka" and "Dozing Green") and 2020. TAs you noticed, there was no live audience for _this_ show. Kyo just performed for a handful of camera men and a live KZread audience. I will leave the interpretation of Kyo's actions in the mid-section to the others because this comment already got out of control 😅

@@moshpitreactions It's ok to mention at some points but Kyo's case is very different from the ones you mentioned in the video. He almost never "pushes" his voice but works with his entire body to back up his vocals while keeping completely to himself in the moment. That's why his voice can fill an entire venue even without a microphone. It's hard to find the right terminology for this in English and be sure it's the word I'm looking for but it might help to just look at his body posture and how it changes with each singing style when you see them next. When you watch one of the videos where he's topless you can see exactly how he uses his abdomen to produce certain sounds (it's always visible in the posture but even more so when he's half naked 😅). In some older videos (mainly before 2012 but even more so before 2008) you will hear him "pushing" much more (although still not excessively) but a majority of his screams back then where of the "primal" variety.

I advise you to watch old DEG clips..they were completely different then. The style of music was different. I advise you to watch: Akuro no Oka, Cage, Kasumi, ill, Garden, Yokan, Yurameki, Ain't afraid to die, Cube, Raison detre, Tsumi to Batsu, Jessica, Ash, Filth, Embryo, Obscure, Saku. Write down this list..it's worth checking out. I promise you will be surprised..they look like a completely different group there.

Now this is an experience. I remember when this song came out and I was like "what is their next album going to sound like?" Because this song is so dark and atmospheric. This song isn't on the newest album. Although the newest album is dark and atmospheric so 🤔

The "pulling out the guts" part of the song weren't actually guts. It was symbolic of removing emotions :)

The core of the individual is the stomach (which is why Buddha is often portrayed with a large tummy) so both answers are correct, he's simulating pulling his guts out because that's where the emotions (that have turned impure) dwell.

A few people have reacted, but Kyo has also done this During "Mazohyst of Decadence", A song about abortion. I believe it to be him physically pulling out a baby and stomping on it, and his songs have been pretty anti-abortion.

He's miming committing seppuku here. I saw them do this live on the last US tour, and he even went the extra mile and had a fake blood capsule stashed somewhere that he broke with his teeth. The giveaway of what he's doing is in the mic movement, he "stabs" himself and then drags the mic up and over, and then uses the chord for "intestines".

Their only songs confirmed to be about abortion are Mazohyst and Obscure, and even then Kyo has stated that he's not necessarily anti-abortion, he just hates how Japanese society views it as a totally normal thing, which is recurring with Dir En Grey. They very heavily criticize a lot of Japan's more archaic social norms, the lack of help or empathy for mental illness being a common one.

Ah, it's sad that you didn't get into this one so much. But it won't be the last Dir en grey song you won't get into that easily.I'm waiting for the day you will be reacting to anything before Vulgar. I think you got a bit more into it during the second part when it was a bit less...well it's not quite electronic but I guess you know whet I mean. (I cannot wait to watch the sukekiyo reaction after this. I already bet you had trouble with that one. But maybe I'm wrong? Maybe you are secretly real disco fans. haha. Ou why am I speculating I just need to turn the page :D) Two thoughts more on this video, though: Kyo's lows in the second part are so nasty on the recording. You will appreciate them even more there! And I actually tear up occasionally during the second chorus. During the lines that are translated with "Life that was born into freedom. In a world where it gets tamed inside freedom" his voice just reaches straight into my chest and wraps around my heart. The translation makes it sound a bit clumsy but you can hear the poetry in those lines when listening to them.

In my not humble opinion this kzread.info/dash/bejne/madmlq6Be5jXpaw.html or this kzread.info/dash/bejne/qn1hkselo8bVgdI.html are the best Different Sense performances all around. The first one has high screams more similar to the album version though. You guys haven't really heard what he can do with his high screams yet - he can fluctuate the pitch wildly. It's one of his most unique vocalizations - he mostly uses the technique on the album Dum Spiro Spero but he's used it on at least a few songs per album since Uroboros. I could list performances where he nails the vibrato scream better than he has in any Different Sense performance though. But if you just want to hear the scream then the album version might be best. There's a music video.

People gotta be requesting more than Dir En Grey. I recommend Imperial Circus Dead Decadence. This stuff is just straight bonkers heavy kzread.info/dash/bejne/qH11l7iMmbjddso.html

Finally, someone requested ICDD

This is my third time hearing this. Heard it when it came out. Saw it live. Heard it now. Its not my favorite. I know a lot of fans love this one and always request it but its not my cup of tea either. I think there's great ideas in the song but its a little too long and too disjointed for me. There's a handful of things from the last couple of albums that are like that for me so idk. Just a bump in the road for me with my relationship with the band. I'm glad some people really dig it though. Maybe if they ever remake it like they've done some of their songs in the past I'll vibe with it better. Laughed out loud when I heard Dir en grey Reactions though. I knew it was coming 😆. As soon as y'all did two reactions to the band I was like "its going to take over" lol
