KYB TV Episode 3: How to Choose the Best Shocks

The best shocks, no matter how you are using your truck or SUV.
The best shocks can offer more than just a smooth ride, they can help restore your truck’s handling and control or even provide additional control when towing or hauling. All KYB shock absorbers are designed to the highest standards and are manufactured in the same facilities that build shocks for new vehicle manufacturers. We understand that people use their trucks and SUVs in different ways and it’s important to give people a choice when choosing the best shock for their truck.
If you loved the way your truck or SUV rode and handled new, we suggest choosing the KYB Excel-G. If you are looking for additional control because you are occasionally hauling or have larger tires and wheels, we recommend the KYB Gas-a-just. If you are doing full-time work with your truck and hauling heavy loads, choose the KYB MonoMax. KYB’s line of truck shocks ensures you get the best shock for how you use your truck or SUV.

    I always buy the Exel-G struts to rebuild their coilovers for my customers vehicles. And never had any complaints. I recently purchased an RX-8 to flip. It had the suspension upgraded to the Gas-A-Just struts, and wow it's f'n stiff lol. Feels like its dialed in for track. Crazy how different the shocks are compared to OE replacement shocks Exel-g's are to the Gas-A-Just.

    I put a set of the gas-a-just on my 01 Grand Cherokee w/4" lift and 31" tires. They are about 3 years old and ride exactly like they did the day i put them on (approx. 45k miles). They ride much MUCH firmer than stock. Especially in the rear. The Jeep is my work vehicle, i do remote welding on farm equipment and pull a trailer with my welder and tools so the stiff rear is great for me. I like the sportier ride, personally and they noticeably reduce body roll in corners. On little bumps/wash boards they are harsh at low speed. However, the faster you go, the better they get!

    I recently bought a 2001 Buick Park Avenue Ultra 90k miles, but I found that it tends to continue bouncing after it encounters an uneven roadway. This continued bouncing is documented in a few magazine articles that reviewed these cars when new, so I don't believe it was caused by wear. I really dislike the bouncing and I was considering a Monroe OESpectrum strut for replacement, but I'm also interested in KYB Gas-a-just if these are available for my car. I assume the Excel-G is going to be bouncier than a Monroe OESprectrum. Is there a KYB Gas-a-just strut that would be compatible with my car? Is there an old part number that I should consider hunting/tracking down from various vendors that may have old inventory?

    2012 Chrysler Town and Country. I am thinking of going with 349143 Excel G however during the winter (4 months) I put on 25% heavier tires. Is it worth it to go with the 554379 Gas-A-Just or is that overkill for heavier tires that are only on for 4 months of the year?

  • @kybamericascorp

    @kybamericascorp

    2 жыл бұрын

    The answer, as the video explains, is that it comes down to how you use your vehicle. If you tend to drive that specific vehicle with a full load of passengers and cargo throughout the year, then the Gas-a-just is worth the upgrade. Otherwise, choosing Excel-G is probably the right choice. Adding heavier tires usually warrants going to a monotube, but if they're not even on for half the year, it'll probably be too much damping the rest of the year. Our customer support and tech support departments can help you if you have further questions: kybcs@kyb.com

    That means our coverage is not for that suspension package. We fit check & test our products on vehicles and they are calibrated to perform with certain amounts of weight & other vehicle characteristics. If your vehicle comes with self-leveling suspension and we list that our part is not recommended for that trim, then that means we don’t offer coverage for your specific vehicle. • @kybamericascorp

    @kybamericascorp

    7 ай бұрын

    An expert should probably answer this in something other than a KZread comment section, but the short answer is that it has to do with geometry and the performance of a shock due to the angle and position they’re mounted in. Please remember that a commuter car, a sports car, a fleet work truck and a purpose built rock crawler all have different reasons for where their shocks are mounted, plus what type of shock and spring they use. Hope that helps!

    The short answer is the Strut-Plus is a direct replacement for what originally came on the vehicle and the Truck-Plus is more: Truck-Plus Performance has more damping and Truck-Plus Leveling adds a leveling kit as part of the assembly.

    If you are in the US, please check our online catalog at www.kyb.com/catalog where you can search by year, make, and model. If you are not in the US, please find the KYB company local to your region. Also, shocks control the springs, which control the body movement that you feel in the vehicle. A simple shock replacement may need other components added as well to achieve better stability and control. A KYB Strut-Plus complete assembly comes with an OE replacement strut that's been calibrated to work well with other worn suspension components around it, an OE matching spring that is corner specific, and a new OE mount to help restore your Corolla's handling to like new. Starting with a quality shock or strut like KYB would be a good move to handling changes in road conditions, like potholes as you mentioned.

    For 2003 Honda Accord EX 4 cylinder, do you recommend the Excel-G or the Strut-Plus? How do I know if I can still use the old coil or not?

  • @kybamericascorp

    @kybamericascorp

    Жыл бұрын

    There are a few factors to consider to answer your question. First few factors, what’s the wear on the vehicle? Is it high mileage, driven hard, does it have a floating ride or is it noticeably sagging with ride height issues? Is the paint on the spring cracking, is there rust? Those could indicate spring wear and we would recommend replacement. Second, who would be installing the new parts and where? If it’s a professional mechanic that has access to a spring compressor and the tools often used with a replacement, then either can work. If it’s not a professional doing the replacement, the Strut-Plus is already assembled with the appropriate spring and mount ready to go out of the box. Spring compression can be very dangerous and is not recommended for someone who doesn’t have access to the proper tools and safety equipment. Plus, replacing all those components at once makes a large difference in the control and handling of the vehicle. TL,DR: Strut-Plus is a quick and correct replacement for the strut, spring and mount that has been fit checked and road tested by KYB. It’s recommended for worn components and is a much simpler install than a new bare strut that would be reusing the old spring. We recommend replacing the strut mounts with new struts anyways as the rubber in the worn mount is usually pretty beat up and can lead to rattling noises and potential fitment issues.

    The industry went away from a standard number years ago, there were too many variables to account for: Things like road types, vehicle usage, quality of components, climate, etc. all factor into a shock/ strut's wear. A good shop can give your vehicle a road test and determine how worn shocks & struts are on a vehicle. If your vehicle takes more time and space to stop, has too much body roll or other noticeable signs of worn suspension, it's time to look into a road test to replace shocks & struts.

You would be able to tell if they were stuck by taking them out of the car and fully compressing the shock and see how long it takes for the shaft to rebound, if at all. A good quality shock/strut will normally compress fairly easy and rebound relatively quick. If it has lots of resistance, or doesn't compress/rebound at all, it's stuck, and in need of replacement.

    You'll need to enter in the trim level and drive type in our catalog to see what we offer for your specific vehicle before we can fully decide. www.kyb.com/catalog/ Sounds like monotubes are what you're looking for. Be aware that you can mix and match with MonoMax and Gas-a-just to suite your needs. Our tech support department can help you with that if you reach out to them at: techsupport@kyb.com

    Got a stupid question, when you say “restore original ride quality”, so there are essentially many kinds of Excel-G? Like obviously the factory 4Runner shock is diffeeent than the factory F150 etc. so how can one KYB restore just any factory ride??

  • @kybamericascorp

    @kybamericascorp

    6 ай бұрын

    Excel-G is the name of our twin-tube shock and strut product line that's focused on being the OE replacement for twin-tube applications. We have many different part numbers in that product line. To your point, one shock would not be the correct choice for vehicles that are as different as your 2 examples. In fact, we often manufacture different parts for various trim levels due to the weight and demands of 1 vehicle application, like an F-150. Check out www.kyb.com to learn more and see our online catalog.

    What about the "premium" option?

  • @kybamericascorp

    @kybamericascorp

    2 жыл бұрын

    KYB only builds parts that help restore designed control or provide additional control capabilities. We don't have levels of quality, like "premium," we just make correct parts.

    KYB is OE on Camry. Our Excel-G and Strut-Plus are made using the same components and assembly lines, and then calibrated for vehicles with miles on them.

    We'd recommend finding out what products we make for your vehicle by visiting our online catalog at www.kyb.com/catalog. Once you establish what part numbers you're looking for, you can then click the, "Where to Buy" link. Our Recommended OEM Replacement Excel-G and Strut-Plus products will closely match the original units. We advise getting new springs and mounts, which our Strut-Plus complete assemblies come with, to ensure the ride and handling is consistent.
