Grateful, you took me back 39 years when I saw the last game live in the stadium (Kuwait vs New Zealand in Dec 14, 1981). I still remember when Kuwait scored the equalizer goal in the extra time. It was a wonderful moment!

I was in the stadium in Auckland for the disgraceful match. The referee had clearly been bribed, those two penalties were shocking decisions.

@@ubedac I think you are blind but the penalty was for handball as you can see clearly now rather than on the stadium

In the 1982 World Cup, the New Zealand and Spanish press mocked the Kuwaiti national team and said, "The Arab camel herders have arrived in the World Cup." When welcoming the Kuwaiti fans, the New Zealand public raised sarcastic banners that read: "Return to your beauty" So the martyr Fahd Al-Ahmad brought a camel from Kuwait and placed it in front of the players’ hotel, and Kuwait won at that time. On the return leg, the Kuwaitis brought 3 camels to receive the New Zealand national team and a banner that reads: "Our camels are victorious" Today we say to New Zealand, Spain and the whole West: The Arabs, the shepherds of camels and the shahs, did not only go to the World Cup...but the whole world came to them after they organized the best World Cup in history.

Wow, China was so close to making it!
The Malaysian goalkeeper was the great chow chee keong but by 1980s was past his peak. This turned out to be his last international match. He was admired in Malaysia and Hong Kong but was severely hammered for this match. I can see the shots that beat him here were all quite impossible to stop. We got a proper hammering that day

@P B Goodness! I love Jim Leighton because 1) he was a great keeper, breaking the Scotland GK hoodoo 2) i celebrated Aberdeen's victory in the Cup Winner's Cup Final thanks to Shoot! Magazine 3) his yellow jersey for Scotland was great 4) love his performance in 1986 Mexico, esp vs the Germans and that save from Francescoli 5) I am a Man Utd and Scotland fan. High 5 to my mate here!

Malaysia's preparation for this WC qualifier in Kuwait was awkward. No time for acclimatization and preparing in the cool environment at the Fraser Hill instead. being in the death group beside the Asian Cup winner and runners-up was unlucky. but there were excuses as we qualified to the Olympics the year before.

I think the first new zealand goal in Kuwait wasnt legal. The referee didnt blow the whistle before shooting.

You clearly don't know the laws of football. You don't need to wait for the referee to blow the whistle, only if you ask for the wall to be back 10 meters. Steve Sumner (the NZ captain who scored the goal) said in an interview that he had confirmed this with the referee before the game. Just look up Messi's free kick v Atletico Madrid from a few years ago for another example of a goal which was scored without waiting for the referee to blow the whistle.

Besides, did you see the 2 penalties awarded to Kuwait in the first game v NZ. Outrageous. Referee had obviously been bribed. No other explanation.

@@ubedac Your are correct the reason is that Kuwait and Saudi Arabia used to give large bribes within the AFC.

Realistically a very tough group for us Malaysians who were still only amateurs at the time and played entirely in Kuwait. A group that included eventual qualifiers Kuwait and of course the South Koreans who at this stage began to pull away from the rest of Asia, with their more professional approach and even players in Europe ( see Cha Bum Kuen). So tough assignment no real disgrace.
