CURRENT SCHEDULE
Expect a new video every Sunday and Wednesday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZread channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

    It feels like Big Red's days on the farm will be coming to an end in the next couple of years. It was a good vehicle to get you going into hauling grain, but need to upgrade it gets much stronger every year.

    Put a $grand or 2 in it, and it will be cheaper than payments for a few more years. Exhaust manifold is a pain, but if the rest of the truck is solid it's worth the repair. You will get dinged 2X on trade value anyway, and they will put the manifold on and sell it for 4X more than they put in it.

    I have an older Ford straight grain truck with a V8 gas engine, which are notorious for exhaust manifold leaks. I do most of the repairs, but asked a shop about changing the gaskets on the exhaust. (I've dealt with those in the past) The mechanic told me to turn up the radio if the leaks bothered me! It wasn't worth the problems that would occur trying to replace the gaskets. I'm still listening to loud music!

    Your truck exhaust manifold, might be fixed on the farm this winter. Those manifold bolts that might break you can wire feed a nut on those and they will usually come out.....maybe you cannot have your truck out of service that long. (the welding usually loosens them, or use penetrating oil on there when you drive it for a couple of times.....

    Ryan if you plan on keep using that semi truck to haul your crops in you might want to consider looking into getting those needed repairs done before you end up stranded on the side of the road somewhere where there’s no cellphone service to have someone come to your aide to help you get the truck back home

    Congrats on finishing harvest I don’t know who gave you the really bad advice on the exhaust leak. Exhaust leaks should be repaired immediately because as long as we’ve been hearing it in your videos. it’s already causing major damage to other components other than exhaust system and then it will be major, major money. The advice you received is a death sentence for that motor. Is it your plan to just throw the whole truck away ? I realize it’s not a high dollar value piece of machinery But It is still a very productive and valuable asset to the farm operation Your choice of not doing repairs will slowly but surely lead to the death and into the truck graveyard for it

    There’s nothing cheap about owning a truck and major repairs. I was in the dealership end of it for years. Used truck prices have skyrocketed for the past few years. For many customers, it was a toss up between fixing their truck or taking a chance buying another used truck. For many folks, owning a truck was a necessary evil. Kinda like a wife, can’t live with them, can’t live without them.

    Just out of curiosity - I'm sure you've been asked this before - In your title you refer to "Kuster's" last stand, spelled the way your last name is spelled. However, I noticed over the years that you pronounce your last name as though it's spelled "Kister". Any particular reason for that? Congratulations on being done with harvest. Always a good feeling.

    Not sure if this has been asked but do you get a better yield by going slower? The reason I ask is that the others that I watch seem to be moving much faster. Thanks.

  • @HowFarmsWork

    @HowFarmsWork

    7 ай бұрын

    Depends on the yield. If you have 250+ bushel an acre corn you're harvesting, it helps to go slower because you'll have more corn being pushed out the back. We're also limited by how fast we can take the corn away from the combine so there's no point in pushing things just to sit and wait anyway.
