The first guy, the Coolie, is the true biggest hero of the whole movie. If it wasnt for him, countless innocent lives ( including the children) would have been brutally murdered and the other masters probably wouldnt do a thing. Sure the other masters had reasons to not come out of their shells but this Coolie guy had one too. Yet the moment innocent lives were at stake he simply said fuck it all and take on a whole army to protect them. The Coolie was the ignition that brought all the masters back to their old and true selves, even if it led to the demise of half of them.

It's one of the philosophies of Chinese martial arts - 仁 - which translates to benevolence. These martial artists didn't want to fight till the last moment because martial arts taught them to show benevolence to their foes so that they could have a chance to correct themselves.

Although it stands great on it own, Kung Fu Hustle is much more brilliant if you're a fan of Chow's older films and Hong Kong cinema in general. Great bits of nostalgia littered delicately across all elements in the movie. It feels as though the whole of Hong Kong cinema and Chow's life's work up till that point, culminated in this one movie, which made it so spine tingling-ly epic.

For those who grew up with Chow and HK movies, especially kungfu ones, and has some basic knowledge of Chinese philosophy, spirituality and chivalric traditions of the wuxia genre, this movie was an epic distillation of all those wondrous parts, and beyond. A masterpiece for the heart (and mind).

Honestly, I can’t remember most of those films, there were so many. Some with direct influences - kung fu styles, characters referenced, plot points - might include Buddha’s Palm (1982), Acrobatic vs KungFu (1990), The Legend of the Condor Heroes (JinYong aka Louis Cha novel; a historical-martial arts-fantasy novel series with many movie/drama adaptations), The Return of the Condor Heroes (another famous JinYong novel), The House of 72 Tenants (1973) etc. Chow’s older films (pre-2000), especially, were comedies full of the-underdog-who-triumphed-against-the-odds storylines, i.e., Fist of Fury 1&2 (1991/2), Royal Tramp 2 (1992), Royal Tramp (1992), and King of Beggars (1992) on and on. Sorry I couldn’t be of much help. Cheers.

I’m not sure if earning disrespect from Westerners is such a dishonor nor shame, either btw.......?.....Look at Westerners deciding EVERY asian “chino” . But anyway, once you get out of China it’s like opening to a bigger world, moving to a different level, where their concept “China being the center” should be broken*hopefully. So, with many other reasons too, i would never say Chinese origins ppl are ethnically Chinese. China is such impossibly large, full of various ethnicities country, and i .....i guess i stop. It’s not like i doubt your intelligence but you would never get China nor Hong Kong unless you live there or such. EDIT: interesting comments made and deleted, shame. Well if we go on to a deeper and more understanding , the Chinese government oppressed their own people and tried to stop people from learning different kinds of KungFu/martial arts. Now when the Chinese government banned them most people who knew martial arts would teach it to their apprentices and shows it a form of a show or Opera as they called it back in the old days.
