Honda engine is so much smoother. Just comes down to where you are going to spend most of your time. Gnarly off road and waiting for the bike to be fixed, or dirt/paved roads and out riding. Plus, I’d rather not ride all the time at 7000 plus rpm wringing out a single.

I've never been a speed demon myself but we do plan on riding quite a bit on the open highway so that's why we might get the bigger bikes, still looking into everything tho. I think that 500X is a very good choice & if you do a lot of highway riding you can change out the front sprocket & drop the RPMs quite a bit

@@honda116969 I would go with the Africa Twin if you are going to spend alot of time at interstate hwy speeds. The 500X will do 75 mph with ease, but the bike starts to feel a little light in the front and tends to try and drift alittle at that speed. Great bike for 45-65 mph touring which I do, mostly secondary highways.

Have tested both. Plus for ktm: seat, electronics, tft screen. But also minuses: very viby footpegs, no low end grunt and my test bike was unstable at motorway speed. Also the grips and plastics around the seat looked cheap. Plus for Honda: very comfortable, more grunt at low rpm, larger tank so more range and more stable at motorway speed. Also came across as a more quality product. Also minuses: adjusting screen, which can be done, is cumbersome and the looks of the ktm are a bit cooler. It is also heavier than the ktm. In the end preferred the honda and also got a good deal trading in my old bike. Have not regretted my choice even after watching this vid. Very much enjoyed watching it though, thanks and keep up the good work!

I now have just over 6,500 on my KTM 390 and loving it, hitting a lot more gravel and dirt roads than I though I would this bike handles them so good and some of the roads are more pot holes and ruts than good road. Very surprised how good it handles the sand, I did put the Dunlop TrailMax Mission tire on and they do great job on and off road, and with 6,500 km only wore down 1 mm, ( 1/32" ) new the tread is 10 mm so they are going to last a long time. I have the GIVI Trekker 33/46 hard bags on and even fully loaded I am still getting 3.3 liters per 100 km that is 439 km per tank of gas, ( 273 miles ) I do wish they would of went with a 18 liter gas tank, That would give 545 km per tank or ( 339 miles per tank ) Then even if you hit Newfoundland and Labrador you would not have to carry extra gas. If this bike had a 18 liger gas tank it would be a 10 out of 10 for me but with a 14.5 I can only give it a 9.

Expectations vs. reality: most people who would buy these machines will want the more dirt oriented bike but in reality will spend far more time on the pavement. As close as they are in the dirt, you'd probably be happier in the long run buying the bike that's better on road.

I will go with the more off road, will most likely be doing a lot or road and dirt roads, but when I hit the sand and light off road I will be glad to have the KTM also like that it is a single, and the smaller wind screen. Have the Versys 300 X now but do not like the high rev engine, not bad under 80 km but any thing more and the sound, and the fuel consumption are just too much. It is a great bike for the windy roads and light off road, but the high rev is just to much. I also have a DR 650 with a 20 liter tank for the harder off road, that is one bike I will never get rid of. ( jack of all trads.) It is every very good, at every thing, but not the best at any thing. And puts a big smile on my face every time I take in out. 3 in the stable and if I trade the Versys X for the KTM 390 they will all be singles. A +++ for me.

I bought the 2020 KTM 390 adventure 2 years ago. It's brilliant in my humble opinion. I've had Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Ducati, BMW and plenty of other KTMs. For the price point and features, I was sold. I've ridden it down Baja once and other than putting plugs in the tire, it never left me stranded. I couldn't keep up with the other big bikes on pavement but I never laid it down either. Great all around bike. I have just over 21K miles on it now. Great review BTW.

Does depend on what you want to use the bike for, having said that if I was doing a long tour with tarmac and dirt then I don’t want to break down, for that the Honda wins hands down and probably makes more sense than many other adventure style bikes too, the fact that it’s a twin and has a much better tank range makes it a more all round choice too. The electronics on the KTM are all well and good until they go wrong, a regular criticism of modern high end adv bikes

I would think the Honda has the better engine as far as reliability and if you're going to do long adventure trips do you think we should be concerned about the 390? I looked at maybe switching my 500x for 390 but, 390 didn't seem adequate replacement. My main motivation was weight as I sometimes haul bike on hitch carrier of the truck when I go on vacation. When compared everything, it wasn't worthy. I hauled my X from Texas to Cali to Oregon and rode back 2100+ miles. I'm sure 390 could do it too but, X has the edge in my opinion.

after a lot of research I went with the KTM 390 Adventure and glad I did after 3,500 + Km am very happy with it no problems on the highway, and much better off road, and feels much lighter than it is, and so easy to go slow on. Did take the Honda out for a test run but found that the KTM was more of what I wanted. I traded in my Versys 300 X and what a great improvement all round, As far as wind protection, I will go with out, the Versys had way to much, I love the feel of the wind on my chest, one of the best things about riding a bike. If you want to do off road and a lot of gravel and dirt roads, as well as highway go with the KTK if mostly just highway and very little off road go with the Honda. But remember when you hit the off road you want the best you can get on a ADV bike, even if most of your riding is highway, which mine is, most likely 80% road and 20% off road but having over 8,000 Km already this season, on 3 bikes, that is still a lot of dirt and gravel and off road. Some of the dirt roads I do have 2' tall grass growing up the center. Thinking about it unless you want the wind protection I would go with the KTM 390 Adventure. That way if you want to do dirt roads and off road you have the best small ADV bike for the job.

Correct in almost all respects for this task - I found the bike simply too small (I’m 6’3” 220lbs) and quickly sold it for a KLR650 for the TAT. I then sold the KLR and bought the ‘stretch 500x’ ie; the Honda nc700x- and absolutely love everything about it! I did the Smokey Mtns 1000 autumn ‘20 and plan on a few big BDRs this summer. I've had no problems whatsoever with my CB. and I still have it love it to this day. only thing I would like to see is better suspension which is easy to fix if you have the money. I plan on hopefully this year putting on the stage 2 of the rally raid suspension. I have soft luggage on mine cuz I prefer it. and you don't feel the weight on the CB off-road, if you balance your load. I carry my tent and everything else I need to go camping off-road. And what's really nice about this bike is you can ride it on the highway and the roads to get to the dirt and the single track and you're all set for a great adventure. there's also a plus that you forgot to mention and that is there's lots and lots of aftermarket parts for the cb500x

I also like the traction control you can turn of and 2 settings for the ABS on road or off road, I did look at the 2019 Honda that comes with the 19" front wheel and better suspension than the ones before 2019. they are bough great bikes, but the adjustable suspension front and rear and more features it has won me over. I also find the read outs on the KTM much easer to read, than on the Honda. But if you like wind protection the Honda wins, but I love the feel of the wind on my chest. I have just demo'd these 2 bikes in the UK and am not biased to either, I can't understand this review as the KTM I rode was pretty gutless below 5k revs, and the vibes from the footpegs were very intrusive to the point of saying this is not a good roadbike at all, but on a trail, much better than the Honda, but for my purpose, mainly roadriding, and a bit of trail riding the Honda wins hands down, more comfy, runs almost like a sewing machine, much better low end and better protection and fuel consumption, + better fit & finish. Bought the Honda, also with much better reliability a consideration. Pleased !!

A very large percentage of people won't need to spend extra dough on the KTM, simply because they won't *ever* use the off-road advantages. Add in better real-world mpg and stone-reliability, and it's an easy choice for most. But the KTM for those who *actually* can use it, is amazing.

I take mine on some pretty rough roads that have more pot holes and ruts than some single track and loving it. That millage is fully loaded with my 33/ 46 liter hard bags. I bought the KTM 390 Adventure end of last year and am just now starting to ride it more, now that the Idaho winter is warming up. Can't address reliability topic but KTM adventure bikes have been ridden in some severe situations all around the world. Will it match Honda quality, probably not but than again this isn't a 100,000 mile motorcycle either. I've had several Honda motorcycles, one pet peeve I have is that their instrument gauges are lacking unless you get a high end or high price model. In the Indian market - the price of this Honda is more than double compared to the KTM 390 adventure. The KTM is far more loaded with features, is extremely reliable and finally major value for money. Honda’s pricing only shows their obtuse arrogance and zero understanding of consumer needs.

Final result KTM - BUT - fast forward 2 years with heavy mileage and top end rebuild it'll be "should have bought the Honda". The spec of the 390 is great, but KTM are still a bit of a niche buy particularly with the 390 engine as reliability seems to be not quite there as yet if the KTM forums are to be believed.

My Duke 390 is reliable. Top-end rebuild in two years? You must do a lot of miles. Which KTM forum have you been looking at?

I've ridden my duke390 for 30,000km in just 1 year and it's definitely a reliable engine. Best fun small bike I currently have. I also have a Versys and a CB. But all the fun is with KTM
