KTM CARB vs KTM TPI vs KTM TBI: The Key Differences Explained

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

KTM is an Austrian company with a global reputation for manufacturing motorcycles. They have a long history of producing a variety of bikes, including dirt bikes, street motorcycles, and adventure motorcycles, successfully dominating these markets.
Founded in 1934 by engineer Hans Trunkenpolz in Mattighofen, Austria, KTM initially started as a metalworking shop. By 1953, KTM had developed its first motorcycle, the R100. Over the decades, the company expanded its product line to include mopeds, bicycles, and radiators. They built their first sports motorcycle, the Trophy 125cc, in 1957
First, let's start with the carburetor. Imagine it's 1997, and you've just bought a brand-new KTM EXC 300. Before you even take it out for the first ride, you need to jet the carburetor and change the jets to match your local conditions. This involves considering factors like elevation and air temperature. Once you've sorted that out, you need to find a gas can, fill it with fuel, and then add oil to create the proper premix. Only after mixing it thoroughly can you pour it into the fuel tank and get ready to ride.
But if you think that's where the problems end, you're mistaken. You'll often find that making a premix that's too rich can cause excessive smoke from the exhaust, which might lead to fouling your spark plug. Additionally, issues with the carburetor float not closing properly can result in fuel spilling onto the ground.

09:40 the best option is not mentioned. That would be to get a carb bike and buy a lectron carb. This carb has no jets and uses a metering rod. It is an ingenious mechanical Carburetor not electronic. It automatically agjusts for elevation and air temperature. The you get the benefits of carb carb and benefits injection system without the need of a fuel pump that could possibly fail. You also get the benefits of a simple reliable easy to work on fuel system. If you dont know what a lectron carb is I recommend looking it up.

I never had problems with my dirtbikes with carbs. But TBI sounds like step in right direction. At least for majority of riders.

Smartcarb: Let me introduce myself. No more jetting. Change on the go.

Sure, but meter carbs don't perform as well and they aren't fail proof like many think they are. They still need tuning and any avid rider is still going to be consistently tinkering and dialing it in.

@panic-revv85 I went from keihin to smartcarb. Didn't feel the difference. For average rider, it will be hard to find a difference. Cody Webb uses smartcarb. It's easy to adjust lean/rich on it. I've done it a few times on the trail.

@1down5up_enduro I've only used the lectron and they definitely don't perform as well as the keihin. A friend of mine built a YZM500X with the BRC kit. He loves the lectrons. He bought the Big air lectron, and smartcarb to test and ended back on the keihin. Meter carbs are good for trail riders for sure. They just don't perform as well imo. The YZ250 keihin also has a powerjet that is operated via TPS and silonoid. It's a hard combo to beat for power.

I’ve ridden all and in my opinion a perfectly jetted carb is the best with bottom end and top end speed

I have no issue with carbs, but I have two issues with this video. 1. oil injection has been in use reliably since the 70s. My first two enduro bikes in the 70s were oil injected with no issues, as were all two stroke street bikes in those days. So, saying carbed bikes are more reliable, especially seeing as all those oil injected bikes of the 70s were carbed, isn't quite right. 2. Fir crying out loud, on your trail videos point the camera up the trail, you know, like where you are supposed to be looking. I'm getting tired of looking at the bike's front fender and the three feet in front of it.
