KTM 790 Duke: Launch Mode

For quite a while now Lomate has been harassing me to make a launch control video. I did give it a go one day after following the instructions in the user manual, but I had no luck in getting it to activate so gave up before I looped the bike or did myself some damage. Then Dean Brown got in touch asking me to make a video too. I thought I'd dodge it after explaining that the official guide was a bit obscure to say the least and that I couldn't find anything else online so it was never going to happen... Unfortunately for me Dean had the low down on the set up so here we are!
It's fairly straight forward (see below) but that's the easy bit. Finding an off switch for your self preservation button and a quick enough reaction for the gear changes is something else. This is going to take some practice to crack properly. These are my first attempts...
LAUNCH CONTROL SETTINGS:
Warm engine and tires.
Ride Mode: Track
Launch Control: On
Anti Wheelie: On
Traction Control: Must be 5 or higher
You should see 'Launch Control' towards bottom right of display. This will count down from '3' to '1' after each attempt, but may quickly go back to '3' by the time that you circle around for another attempt.
Pull clutch in and twist throttle to max before releasing the clutch quickly but smoothly (Do not just release it) and hold on while leaning forwards.
You can always cover the rear brake until you start to trust the electronics, but this will hamper swift gear shifts as in my case.

Yes I remember watching this when I bought my 790. My settings where wrong, I should've watched it again before going to the track. Or tried it a couple times on the street first.

A little late to the party but a nice vid. I really appreciate your content. It was glad to see you ease into to get your confidence up. I've been mousetrapped a time or two on a bike and will definitely take my time to feel out the electronics. With such a light bike and a lot of power, it could go over really quickly. I'll have to give it a try on my 890. Glad you didn't dump the clutch. It might work but I'd like to do it with maybe a harness and crane to save me if things went bad. ;-)

Not something that I've ever tried before on a bike, and didn't fancy losing the rest of my summer waiting for parts if I got it wrong 😉😂

@@CodgerBiker I have to admit, I don't think I'd bother with a bike if I had to ride miles on motorways to get to some nice twisties. It takes around 15 mins to ride across Elgin when it's busy, and I find that a chore!

Campbell Zero One Well you can see typical conditions here in my Puig video. I can be in Wales quite quickly now though as there is a new bridge, free for bikes. To be honest, it was the new bridge which brought me back to 2 wheels again. Apart from maybe NZ (not ridden there) nowhere can beat Scotland in my opinion 👍🏍

@@CodgerBiker The Welsh hillsides (from what I see in Evo magazine anyway) remind me a lot of Royal Deeside/Braemar. Just with less trees. Totally agree regards NZ. Looks like Scotland on steroids. If you haven't already, you should watch 'Billion Dollar Bogan'. Funniest motorcycle travel videos going. Mostly unintentionally mind 😂 He recently did an NZ series and is busy working his way through Alaska just now.

Loved it! Great video bro, great instructions, my hat off to you for clearing up the mistakes from the manual for all the other 790 owners 👍 it seemed you were definitely getting your confidence up by the end 😊 when I do the launch control my front end lifts up about a foot every time!! Maybe I'm letting the clutch out too quickly? I think I had my TC at about 5 as well so that might explain it. Thanks for another top quality video, I will be surprised if this doesn't become your most 'liked' video

Thanks Dean. Can't take all of the credit though. Wouldn't have had a clue if you hadn't forwarded me the correct procedure. I'll try and build up to '5'. Never been a wheelie merchant so it might take a little longer to crack that compared to the video settings. I'm glad I took that detour on the way home. Jimmy Bond probably did me a favour, because this road was in my original plan but was a little out of my way. Kind of forced my hand. Don't think I'll ever beat my original Akrapovic video for views, but I don't really care. Just make them for the pure fun of it.

You're welcome, I'll always share my knowledge with other bikers and have lots of respect for people like you making it easier for everyone else to find the information. Love the effort you put into the videos. I know it isn't all about the 'views' but it's always nice to have your work appreciated 😂 I didn't realise your Akro video got +30K views!! I reckon this video still has a chance to be no. 1 though, we'll see. Keep up the good work bro

Hi Fuzu. Not sure without checking the manual, but I'm away on holiday. Max bhp is at 9,400rpm so must be around 10,500 to 11,000 rpm or there abouts. Peak torque is lower at around 8,000rpm so you'd probably be changing gear around there anyway. You can set the change light (orange zone) on the rev counter to come on anywhere after 6,500rpm once the bike has had its first service. You can see it flashing in my video. It's pretty good as it catches your eye without you really needing to look down for it. Hope this helps 👍🏼

why do you slip the clutch on launch? with launch control you should be able to just dump the clutch and the computer does the rest.

  • @CampbellZeroOne

    @CampbellZeroOne

The advice that I was given was NOT to just dump it, but to release it smoothly. I dare say that you could build up to it if you are braver than me. But at my age it's kind of hard to override your brain's natural instinct to either roll off the throttle or pull the clutch back in 😉
