KTM 790 Duke | First Rides | Motorcyclenews.com

KTM have got it so right with its new 790 Duke. Just like the cream of the middleweight naked crop it combines calm practicality with playful excitement. It can be a track tool one day and a commuter the next. Its new LC8c engine is a peach, the chassis predictably balanced and it’s all topped off with superbike-spec electronics. After 24 years of the KTM Duke, why they didn’t think of this before?

appreciate the extra insight and riding footage - this really is an exciting new release!
I test rode one on Saturday. First road ride for over two years. Within 5 minutes it felt like my bike. I struggle to disagree with anything you said in this video, the bike is just sublime and made me laugh inside my helmet on several occasions. Got it back to the showroom and ordered one immediately. Cant wait for it to arrive.
Great review as always Michael. Keep up the great work. Was great to meet you in person for the second time at Phillip island in Jan this year.
I like it. Needs the looks sorting but I'd have one. Roll on the 790 adventure!
You are one of the best reviewers I have seen. Good job will be looking for more of your reviews
I own a 2016 690 duke, and I'm eagerly awaiting the 790. Thank you for the review / thoughts. Excellent!
As always, another great, detailed, fully informed and knowledgable review from MCN.
@5:20 someone who hates those tires heard you
Looking forward to the comparison. I'm super happy that the middleweight market is growing...so this will one day become a ADV machine.
This has got me excited for the 790 Adventure!
Mr Neeves, as always, impeccable review and relevant information.
love the glass breaking in the background lol
Can't wait for the Street Triple comparison!
Superb we've been waiting for a video like this and hopefully they release in India
ordered mine and will get it late april , cant wait :D

How you like it?
I loved the way you said "the electrics saved me" soo reluctantly. They do though, and as you say, it doesn't matter how good you can ride a bike, certain things are there to catch you out and the electrics are there for those moments.
It would be great if KTM builds an RC 790 based on this - Similar to the 390 series. Now that would be the real scalpel on a track. **Comment edited- because some real bell ends on replies below.

Looks bloody good fun chaps! Thanks MCN
That little thing really moves, and what a great sound...can’t wait for the 790 Adventure R to hit the showrooms
I decided i need this bike about 3 seconds into that first onboard shot. That sound... sweet jesus
Now that looks like a great bike, I hope the electronics trickle down to the 650 class as well.
It's certainly light and that engine is sooo physically small... amazing! Still going for the MT09SP though. It's more of an all rounder. Can't imagine taking the missus on that rear seat.
That brake reservoir looks GREAT.
Great review, looking forward to getting on one very soon hopefully..

When Bike World did a comparison between the super nakeds, they put them on an air strip and compared the braking side by side. They got some surprises. Will be great if you guys can do some objective comparisons between the 790 and the Street Triple R, especially braking, roll-ons and lap times on the same tires when you do your big comparison of the mid-sized bikes.
Very nice review. The bike looks really good, maybe you should ride one around Tasmania for a full test.
If I had the money, I'd buy it right now! Great job KTM. I have the new 2nd Gen 390 and it's a total gem. I love KTM.
Looking forward for the combined review
VERY nice !
Thks.
Nice review. Look forward to your comparison test , maybe add an mv 800 also if its in same price category in the UK. However... the 2012_14 Husqvarna/ bmw marriage already did this concept with the nuda900r. (179kg 105hp 100nm). I love this bike for all the reasons you describe in this review - as does 'royal jordan'. I wonder if ktm have effectively reproduced a new nuda following on from husky takeover?
kinda looks like a little brother to the superduke...i like it 👌
Sounds like a nice bike, not so taken with the looks. Kitchen staff may need better tyres on their trolleys though, failed to take the bend at 5:23!!
What you should do is get the MT-09, street triple and this and fit a pair of slick tires on all of them so we can see who's fastest.
@exothermal.sprocket
6 жыл бұрын
That would be neat. Buy an MT-09 SP and Street Triple 765R, fit exhaust systems, de-cat, ECU flash, quality tires, set up the suspensions properly and let 'er rip.
It looks like you get a bit of head shake when you up the speed a little!
Class rider. Class review. Class bike.
Great review as always (but what happened to the promised follow up contrast and compare with the Triple and MT? Can't see that on the MCN menu)

MCN please add subtitles to your vids. I love all of your First ride series. But I cant understand enough them withour subtitles cuz I’m only good at reading english. So please help me, I want to understand those reviews further and get an ideal bike to me :)z thanks alot
Neevesy. Here's one for you if your reading this. How do all these new middleweights [MT O9 SP , Z900, 765 Striples] compare to one of the greatest middleweights Ducati ever built [which you had and tested long term] . I refer of course to the 848 Streetfighter. The 848 SF trumps them all on horsepower by a margin[132 hp if I remember] and has a great handling chassis as well as excellent brakes and suspension. Thoughts people. You can pick up very good low mileage ones for around 7 grand.
@neevesybikes
6 жыл бұрын
Boz I’d say the 848 would beat it - it’s a fair bit more powerful and sharper handling, but heavier.
When is the group test being done with the triump and MT09sp?
Did I see a timing belt? How many neutrals do the new KTMs come with?
Duke 790 ore Street RS for daily use and twisty roads? Which one do you prefer?
Nice ... shame it doesn't sport the underseat exhaust of the prototype though. In the not too distant future expect an 'R' version with fully adjustable bouncy bits and a couple of other choice extras for around the £10K mark ... KTM would be complacent not to ;)
so how would it compare to the Mt09SP.
Where is captions, Unfortunately I can’t catch him!
Does it power wheelie? (no clutch needed that is)??
Anyone know if thats 169kg WET? Seems very light for wet weight road bike
Does it need a dampener on the forks? They look like they want to go into tankslapper mode in some of the videos.
how's the heat management?
I recently bought a 790 and the low oil pressure indicator is always on when idle..As I read on forums 390’s have the same issues the last years..anyone else having the same issue or knows anything about it? Thanks in advance
Will there be a new rc? Any chances of a new RC?
Wouldn't this also go up against the Ducati Monster 821? 100+ HP. Non-adjustable suspension. Light, fun agile. One thing the Duke seems to do much better is rider comfort. Would like to see the M821 thrown into the mix when you do you comparison tests.
Does it have a quick shifter?
do u think KTM will come out with rc 790
Do 2017 duke 390
what was top speed?
So many great bikes coming out, but the Triumph street tripple still has one up on the ktm for me, the 790 could of potentially been a great bike but due to its reliability issues its really let down, ktm need to work on this, let's hope they have it right for the 2020 model otherwise the 890r will be a flop
Michael can you please add the Ducati 821 in your group test please" Thanks very much

@CBRboy1717
6 жыл бұрын
Look at the concept and production bike side to side. Everything about the concept was sharper and meaner. The stance was more extreme, the front end was slammed down and rear end jacked up high. The swingarm looks longer and thinner on the concept. The rear end got fatter and rounder to accommodate a passenger seat, where the concept had a tiny race cowl. The exhaust got bulbous and of course moved lower, which make the bike look chunkier from the side. The seat and headlight don't look as cool, aka "functional". Even the little Duke 390 looks better than this thing....

MT 09 sp vs KTM 790 vs Street Triple shootout soon?
Is this A2 compliant??
Neevesy, What about the excellent Kawasaki Z900. It's also in the same price bracket [even though it's not really a middleweight]. It must be included in the forthcoming super test on price- value alone. I have seen these go for 7 and a half grand brand new over the winter. It also beat the revised MT 09 in your test last year [indeed it has comprehensively beaten the MT 09 in many other tests around the globe as well].
@neevesybikes

Boz KTM is a lot lighter and more mini super naked-like, but it would be an interesting comparison.
Can’t wait for the KTM vs ***** tests!
Hi, chaps! Can I borrow a part of your video for my own humble channel? I will put a link to yours in description and into the video also. Thanks in advance! P.S. great review by the way!
I hope the next step will be RC 790 :)
Nice apex clipping. Awesome 👍 390 on steroids... 😁
seemed like a lot of head shake going on !
Is it a beginner bike
Its so perfect but the tail lights
I'm not entirely convinced it's going to be anywhere near a 'scalpel' with second rate tires and suspension. This bike has some real potential but you're going to need to change those before you'll get the most of it.
You gonna put it up against the MV Agusta Brutale as well

Is Husqvarna going to be sticking this engine in the 2nd gen vitpilen?
@Zeggawong
6 жыл бұрын
Be interesting what they do with it. Doubt it they just spent 3-4 years getting it on the road, they'd need to change the frame and basically design the whole bike from scratch for the twin. Will probably be a model alongside the vitpilen, i see that lasting at least 3 years as is.
@wormytom

Is there going to be a supermoto.
I see just mild lean angles. is the Duke unstable at high lean or was it just due to conditions ? also : the dash looks like it belongs on old Monster :)
Most trusted motorcycle jouro ever. (LJK Setright close second).
"kinda has a throbby lumpy feel of a V-twin even though it isnt one" Yeah duh is a parallel twin layout but it has a 270° crank making fire like, you guessed it, a V- twin!
I so wished this bike would look exactly like its prototype
RC version please
KTM really have a winner on their hands with this bike, and I suspect they're going to demolish the adventure market as well when the adventure version comes out. Only thing is that I personally don't like the looks all that much, and the high, tucked up pegs aren't for old codgers like me.
Why not against something that’s in a similar price bracket, like the base model Street Triple? The R is nearly £1000 more or 11%, which I’m sorry, would not work out similar to £8,500 on PCP and is quite significant on a below 10k bike. KTM will clearly release a Duke 790 R next year, which will be closer to £10k, then the R or RS is more of a fair rival. Surely... Striple S, Duke 790, MT09, Monster 821, Z900, GSXS750 should be the group test? Then do another for the R, SP’s etc... Maybe throw in a BMW f800r just for a laugh 😂
@joshb3929
6 жыл бұрын
Moonman Chronicles Fair point, I misheard RS. Still, it should be vs the S not the R. The R is still around £1000 more, why use that as a comparison when the S is exactly the same price? The Duke 790 is built to that budget, so doesn’t have adjustable forks etc... which it may do if it’s was over £9000 Why exclude the Z900? It’s £8,300. Exactly the same bracket. At the higher end of the market, saying ‘oh it’s only a grand difference’ between say a 15k and a 16k bike is fair enough. Below 10k, it’s a bit unfair to start doing the same. Otherwise why would anyone buy a Street Triple R instead of an RS...?
@fyorbane
6 жыл бұрын
Why no Z900. It's in the same price range.

Who is wrong? Nobody! Even the Romans more than 2.000 years ago use to say “ De gustibus non disputandum est”....

@Pillokun
6 жыл бұрын
Why is a mt07 borderline on too much power for a beginner? You do know that for a fully A licens you need to learn and take the motorcycle license on a 600cc bike in Europe? Just a couple of years ago you had to take the ride exam on a bike with more than 700cc engine capacity until they dropped the 700cc limit to 600. So if millions of riders had to start of with a bike with 700cc and then 600cc so can a beginner do today.
@threethrushes
6 жыл бұрын
A couple of years ago? I took my UK full licence in 2012 and the level was set at 600cc. I think MT07 would be OK for a beginner, however I would recommend a smaller bike based on the fact that most beginners will make mistakes in the first year or two.

The Monsters are more of a street roadster at this point with no real track aspirations. The naked world now seems to be split in half. As a former Monster owner, I loved the thing to death... but it doesn't hold a candle to these more "athletic" naked bikes.

Outside a Monster 1200S/R, the middleweight naked roasters are leaving the 803cc and 821cc Monsters in the dust. It's a lack of weight and high horsepower that's the theme of the midrange stuff (MT-09, Street Triple 765 range, Duke 790, Brutale 800). Even the heavier Z900 will run with this group with a bit more muscling around. Probably the only comparable bike from Ducati would be a Hypermotard 937.
