KTM 790 890 ADV Norden 901 Wheel Removal/Install | Back in the Garage

In this episode of Back in the Garage, I remove and install the wheels on my 2021 KTM 890 ADV R. (While you should always check your owner's/repair manual I believe the process to be the same on your KTM 790 ADV bikes and the Husqvarna Norden 901. This video should save you some money if you're taking off your wheels for tire changes at the dealership/mechanic, you're doing the tire changes on your own or for any other reason you made need to remove/install your wheels.

    No need to remove the calipers. Just rotate them outwards as you remove the wheel :)

    I prefer to remove them as it makes it easier to reinstall the wheel.

    I used a bottle jack at the front of the bash plate with a 1" board to spread the load. Bike on center stand also. The bottle jack can be easily adjusted to just barely get the front wheel off the ground, rotating the calipers out of the way (5-20degrees) makes it very easy for one old guy to get the wheel back into the awaiting brake pads. Piece of cake, no need to remove calipers.

    ​@@davidrsmith2417 I prefer to push the pads back, before removing the wheel, with my knee. Taking a minute to remove one caliper makes the job less fiddly.

    I was racking my brain why my chain was completely stretched out watching your video on how to replace the rear wheel. The spacer/axle block is on backwards in your video.

    Great video. Thank you. Although I have been changing wheels on my motorcycles for close to 30 years, it is a first on my 2023 ADV. Great point on the ABS sensor. Just one comment, I believe you need to tighten the main axle before you tighten the pinch bolts. Thanks again

    U have to tighten the opposite side pinch bolts in order to tighten the main axle; otherwise it’s just gonna spin.

    I just ordered a 1.85-21/2.5-18 set of wheels with some motoz i/t tires expecting to use the oem wheels for highway use & the new wheels for offroading. I can't tell if that's going to be a huge pain in the a$$ or not 😅🤣

    Having worked on my 950A for over 14 years, I cannot fault your work. Great job. It's a shame KTM didn't provide little ledges on the inside of the swinging arm to support the wheel bushes while the axel is installed - it would make rear wheel installation a lot easier.

    The '23 890 Adventure's swing arm has extra bolt lugs for that option.

    Watch the one on the 1290, it’s essentially the same process. I only make maintenance videos on these bikes when I they actually need the maintenance. Considering I typically get 20k+ plus miles out the the 1290 drive kit, it’s gonna be awhile on the 890.

    Got any tips on rear wheel alignment (for someone who doesn’t want to wrap string around their tire but also wants both wheels to track properly lol)? Also, do you generally try to keep the axle as far back as possible?

    One of these amzn.to/3Po8kWX from Motion Pro works great. I keep a couple of them in the garage. As for the axle, I run the factory spec on chain length and it just gets set to where-ever the chain tension is correct. On my dirt bike(s) sometimes we change the axle position/wheel base depending on track/race but the ADV bikes everything is just normal spec.

    No fork alignment required? Did you put grease on the threads of the front axle bolt/nut?

    If you tighten the axle down properly the forks have no choice but to align. And yes, as I stated in the video, grease on the axle bolt/nut.

    Properly? My Owner's Manual for my '23 KTM 890 Adv, in Section 15.2 states for the mechanic to first put the axle in place. {If alignment is good you don't need to hammer.) Once the axle is flush with the fork stub on the right side, screw in the 32mm hex bolt. I personally don't grease the threads, but I use a little Loctite 243 (oil resistant) on the threads - a little! Torque this big hex bolt to 45Nm (33.2 ft-lb). Then add the four (4) clamp axle stub bolts (with a bit of 243) and barely hand tighten. With bike back off the jacks, back on its tires, put it on its side stand. Loosen each of the clamp (fork stub) screws until they are barely loose - the forks need to slide a bit on the lightly greased axle in the next step. Get on the bike, exercise F / R brakes lightly to seat brake pads to the discs. Release the brakes, roll the bike a few inches forward and nail the Front brake as you press down on the bars. Get the bike rocking a bit. The forks should dive a bit, then you lift up on the bars and repeat again and again. The forks will be in compression, then tension and the fork tube stubs will be subtly moving left-right on the axle as they self-align themselves (aka "get happy"). Then carefully dismount the bike and tighten each fork clamp screws in several stages to gradually add clamp force. Fully torque to 15Nm (11.1 ft-lbs). That is the proper way to tighten down the forks to the front axle after a simple tire removal. Motion Pro has a nifty fork alignment tool and a procedure that includes the triple tree mounts - if you are a true perfectionist about fork alignment!.

    So I bought a vortex rear stand and it worked really well. But the front stand sucks ass did not work at all very disappointing. Went to return it and they gave me a whole bunch of shit which really pisses me off. So here you go do not buy Vortex ever. Pitbull is the way to go.

    Ktm says 250nM for torque spec. Where did you get your information from? 250 seems like a lot.

    1) No idea where you found 250NM for anything I gave the spec for on this job 2) not sure which torque spec you’re taking about (front axle, rear axle, brake calipers, etc 3) The factory service manual and it’s the same spec for all the 790/1090/1190/1290 etc
