I don’t know why it didn’t hit me 40 years ago, but I was busy learning about all the great music that came before him. Finally, at a funeral for a friend 2 years ago, a string quartet played the 5th string quartet and I found tears streaming down my cheeks. I’ve been listening to Philip Glass non-stop since that day.

Have you discovered his film score The Secret Agent yet? I hoped that the Kronos Quarter had put that on their album too.
ETALLONIC PERFORMANCE. Kronos - is the definition of the words "String Quartet". Philip Glass is one of the Greatest Composer in history of MUSIC.
great music and a stunning performance. Glass in my opinion is the number one of classical contemporaney music
This is just insanely good.
I'm just reading his autobiography. It has brought me back to the music with greater respect for his history and training.
I've enjoyed Kronos Quartet for years...I want to say ...Thankyou!
That's insanely beautiful!
Yes - this is very good music and beautifully played with responsive intelligence and grace.
Haunting. In the best respect... the more we listen to it the deeper it goes inside my heart and spirit...
The cover is a painting by Francisco Clemente entitled "The Four Corners." Certainly a painter worth a few minutes of Google Image ogling. Cheers!

I am listening to this magnificent performance and realized that SQ 4, aside from reminding me of Beethoven's op 127 with its opening forceful chords, is expertly jammed with by the birds outside my window :) edit: and the last movement of this video makes me cry ;(
JOY.....

Glass actually makes this observation in his book. Pretty much everything he composed before 1985 involved one or more singers, so those habits of writing lyrical melodies carried over to his purely instrumental work.
I have to buy a very high quality set of speakers just so I can be memorised. I would love to hear this in a large cathedral

17:20 ✨✨✨✨
I would say that perhaps it’s Kronos Quartet that can actually perform String Quartet No. 5 that is lovely. I witnessed an attempt at a performance by another quartet. Honestly, it was horrifying. The piece requires strong soloists who can perform together. The viola sounded a half step flat, while some of the ostenatos and other tonal fireworks were disemboweled with a dull plastic knife. This is insanely beautiful.

Sometimes, you end up in a cold room, dark and empty. Closed windows, locked doors. Your eyes have adapted to the small light that seeps into the holes of your curtains. You stand in the middle of the room and you have finally become this "entity" you had seen in a strange and penetrating dream 🕌

Isn't Joan Jeanrenaud the cellist for this recording? Thanks for the upload.
@vidabreve
3 жыл бұрын
I understand that yes, she did play cello on this recording.
I actually kinda stole this from a library. Never took the CD back. circa 1999.
After so much loud and stupid on youtube it's nice to tune into this.
The cellist in this classic Glass album is NOT Jennifer Culp, but Joan Jeanrenaud, the original cellist of the quartet since 1978. Culp replaced Jeanrenaud in 1999, then was replaced by Jeffrey Zeigler in 2005 who was replaced by Sunny Yang in 2013. Jeanrenaud recorded 31 albums with the Kronos Quartet, the last one being "Dracula" in 1999 (or was it Mansell's "Requiem for a Dream" ?)

Some of the themes sound similar to Uakti.
@davidsleger6476

Glass is certainly not oppose to recycling themes. When I was listening to "Aguas da Amazonia" the first few times I was perplexed at how familiar a certain recurring theme sounded. It wasn't until I reacquainted myself with Glass' "Solo Piano" album that I found my answer. Metamorphosis!
Glass has been screwed out of at least 20 Grammy Awards
I like the music in 17:20, very optimistic.
