"Aheym means ‘homeward’ in Yiddish, and this piece is written as musical evocation of the idea of flight and passage. As little boys, my brother and I used to spend hours with my grandmother, asking her about the details of how she came to America. (My father’s family were Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia). She could only give us a smattering of details, but they all found their way into our collective imagination, eventually becoming a part of our own cultural identity and connection to the past. In her poem “Di rayze aheym,” the American-Yiddish poet Irena Klepfisz, a professor at Barnard in New York and one of the few child survivors of the Warsaw Ghetto, writes: “Among strangers is her home. Here right here she must live. Her memories will become monuments." Aheym is dedicated to my grandmother, Sarah Dessner."

"Daheim" means "At home" in german. "Heim" means "Home" so you can really see the link between english, german and jiddish and I suppose the word will be similar in other nordic languages.

Long time ago, a fine musician (François Couperin ) said that "Music is more beautiful than beauty ". When I listen to this amazing CD i think i understand that. Amazing.

I’m starting to feel each evolving section within this passacaglia-like piece depicts a different aspect of desperation and flight as well as the precious memories left behind, giving each a lovely face of its own...

I love how this is not merely melodious, nor simply crashing noise, but a language that communicates something... The emotion behind words. Words that might be poetry about war (not all poetry is 'pretty') Reflecting on the first movement

i've loved a lot of albums in my life, but never like this. bryce dessner has done so much to help me. i only wish i could return the favor to someone
