Very helpful video for weighing my options on where to start animating again. I started with Artoonix and Macromedia flash MX while I was in school and I'm not too familiar with the new stuff that is out today. Thankyou!

Thanks for the info! I haven't tried Open Toonz myself but it looks like it's the better program for importing frame by frame animations into for better timeline control. Krita's timeline is still confusing to control.

It renders on my s10 lite. But I'd only use it for coloring. I like limitations on krita since it forces you to think out of the box. Open toons seems bordering puppeteering. You should have included Blender.

You know they got tablets for windows so you can take OpenToonz with you so you still get that flexibility! I'm not sure about Mac since I don't really use Mac but I'm pretty sure they have to have some sort of portable device but I don't think so since it'll be competing with their apple tablets unless you want to carry a laptop with you I guess that's the only other way but as far as actual tablets that can run a mac operating system I'm not too sure about that

I am using Krita for animation and I am evaluating changing to opentoonz (just for animation), I was testing opentoonz for a while but I got used to krita. Would it worth the change?

Yeah, if you feel comfortable using Opentoonz, go for it. Krita is mostly used for painting at the end of the day, you can draw but animating is not the best. I'm also trying to switch from Krita :)

@@Munkaa That's the point, for now I feel more comfortable using krita for animation. But as I tested opentoonz I've found lot of impressive things Like for example the plastic tool (that feature is absent from krita), and the handling of animated transformations is much better in opentoonz On krita, I can't have vectorial animations and the Z order and nested transforms are both linked to the layer hierarchy, I do think opentoonz is better at this because it allows ordering the levels and managing the transform hierarchy as separated thing Krita has some performance issue when using lot of nested transform masks for animation, opentoonz works smooth for such cases (Krita never was focused on animation)

I'm testing Clip Studio Paint, also not the best for animation but still doesn't crash as much Krita does, so yeah we will see.

Thank you for sharing this great video, subscribed! I downloaded Open Toonz latest stable version to my brand new computer but it crashes a lot. I thought that Open Toonz only crashed because my older computer was 4 years old but now I'm pretty sure that's not the case, also any other software never crashed during my sessions. it's annoying because I mostly animate frame by frame and I draw lots of frames. Even after I load my saved backup it keeps on crashing every time I continue animating for some minutes. I hope that they will fix this in the next version. Personally I'm used to TVpaint as animation student, I don't like vectors for drawing because it feels too digital compare to real life pencil and paper. Krita timeline is too strange for me it's the same as Clip Paint Studio and Photoshop, I've tried real hard to get used to it but I can't! at least it's not crashing like Open Toonz so I didn't lose my patience and motivation while animating. Basically I'm looking for a new (none vectors) 2D Animation solution. Finally I own a new strong PC and I've tried every 2D animation software out there. I didn't even mention all hehe ^_^ If you know anything new please share thx!

Hey WELCOME! I don't use Opentoonz that much, for the time I used it for this video it didn't crash but as you said the vector features were annoying to draw with. I used TvPaint a long time ago and I really liked the drawing there, I think Krita is very close to that. Recently I'm trying to get used to the timeline in ClipStudio (it's way worse than Krita's btw). Krita animation timeline for frame-by-frame it's actually not that complicated when you try to tween animations tho it crashes a lot. I guess everything takes practice, good luck with your animation journey! On this channel I have a bunch of tutorials on Krita for animation, I hope they help in the same way :)

@@Munkaa Thx for taking the time and sharing and kindly replied to me, I appreciate it. I decided to stop using Open Toonz especially after the latest stable version crashed on me so many times and also I don't like the UI at all it's so confusing, but the crashes is the main reason why I'm not usinig it anymore I can't trust unstable product if it's free or not it doesn't matter since I work for commisions now and I need a tool that I can trust. Until I'll find a new software for my likeness, at the moment I'll be using TVPaint since I have an old copy from my student-days. Krita is not my cup of tea when it comes to the timeline and lack of animation features in general it is very limited based on my needs of course, I'm not worried about tweening much because I do only frame by frame but it is nice to have it for titles and basic movements in my case. Krita is one of my favorites when it comes to brushes. Clip Studio Paint is nice with brushes and many other features, but it doesn't feel like it was made for animation, every classic animator will notice the strugle imediatly, it's very hard for me to deal with their timeilne and lack of timeline and animation related features, it brings me back nightmares from photoshop, I'm not going back to that evil software, not just for animation. My goal now is to look for a new animation software mostly to help me with classic animation because that's what I do so I'll keep look for the ONE but until then I'll just keep struggling I guess. thx again I'm about to watch more of your videos, glad I found out your channel, take care.

I've tried the newest official version of opentoonz 1.7 and it crashed the second I change a color. on my second attempt while launching the software it froze for no reason so I had to shut it down manually and try again but it froze again! for my third attempt I downloaded one version back and it crashed as soon as I picked the eraser tool😡after such a bad experience with opentoonz I downloaded Krita and it works smoothly out of the box with my brand new wacom cintiq, I hope it's not going to be hard to animate within Krita I'm inspired by what @Munkaa shows, btw thank you!

have you tried Tahoma 2D? is the same as opentoonz but more intuitive. Since it's open source, someone made a modified opentoonz and called it Tahoma, adding things they wanted to have

Hey there! Yeah, I have in the past when it was coming out. I haven't used it as much to be honest, at least not for working projects so I can't tell if I prefer it over the other options available. Do you use it for work?

@@Munkaa no, i dont use it for work since animation is one of my hobbies, so I can't tell you if it has everything you have in Payed software. What I can say is that it had many updates, maybe if one day you're super bored you can check out the new features on youtube, they're mostly quality of life stuff like auto inbetween, auto lip sync or drawing straight lines whithout clicking the line tool. There are more but these are the ones I remember the most
