KRIS’s UPDATE: “Hello, new friends. A brief update. I left Vermont several weeks ago, meaning to make a brief stop in Florida. Plans changed due to the hurricane and I ended up spending 3 weeks working with one of the relief organizations. It was equally hard and rewarding. Volunteering is a privilege we van dwellers have. We can show up quickly where needed and can spare days or weeks to help in communities. I am just now on my way west to Arizona, enjoying beautiful weather and great conversations with our nomad community. See you down the road.”

I will probably end up this way when my partner passes away. My income is half of what cheap rent is these days. I lived in a subsidized apartment complex for a few years. You get what you pay for. There was lots of mold and denial by the property managers who treated us like second class citizens. I felt trapped. Am in a nice house with the man I love now. But I can easily see myself needing to live out of a van by my mid 70s. Hopefully I will be as chipper and positive as this. We women will be everywhere hopefully creating community wherever we go. As a cheery old lady in another video said, she'd rather die having adventures than wasting away in an old folks home.

I hear you. I only owed $2.30 on my prescriptions after my insurance paid. I got an email that I didn't have enough in the bank to pay. You want to know why. Because I decided to get Audible. Audible is such a great asset to people who live alone. The full package is $14 a month. And it caused a $2 check to bounce. It's hard for the elderly to survive
I don't know her but I just love her spirit and attitude about things. She's built a nice little home for herself. Thank you for this interview and tour. Stay safe.

I was a bet jealous of the nice tent I put up for them. But I am too creaky to sleep on the ground.
Hi, dear ones, Kris here. The holiday season for those of us on the road lends itself to new ways to connect. It also heightens the awareness of people living alone, often cold and in darkness in their cars or tents or sleeping bags. I have a favorite way to reach out without singling out individuals. I am passionate about libraries and after asking permission, I bring trays of party treats to any library willing to over them to their patrons. The staff often know the stories behind that elderly gentleman in the corner or the woman working the jigsaw puzzle. They know just the right way to encourage them to partake. May each of you be warm. May each of you be safe. And, may you all have enough.

I enjoyed your video. I always learn something. I’m 69, and have been researching this lifestyle since 2015. I’ve traveled since age 19 when I married a truck driver. Within a few months of married life we started traveling cross country. We did that for 4 years before children came along. I collect paper maps. I regret not keeping the ones from the 1970’s that were marked of places I’ve traveled. I now use the tattered ones to cover vegetable cans to use to hold office supplies, paint brushes, cleaning brushes at kitchen sink and many other items. I’m a retired nurse that worked in Behavioral Health for 30 Plus years so I know self defense techniques. If you’re ever in Greer’s Ferry Lake area of north central Arkansas contact me. It’s a few hours south of beautiful Eureka Springs. Happy and safe travels.

The reason I use and promote the use of the word homeless is to help the public get a clear view of how many people have no way of ever having a secure place to live. Our government, social services and media count only the highly visible homeless and overlook the teen sitting in a van outside their college or the lab tech living in the parking lot of the hospital or the teacher entering the school gym to get a shower before class. The more of us that stand up to be counted, the more services will be provided. We are willing to work but we desperately need plentiful public showers, public wifi, mail service, laundry and safe parking. I am homeless.

Thank you, Tim.
I don't understand why she is homeless if she has adult children. If my Mom were alive, I would take her in in a heartbeat. I know some parents don't want to be a burden on their kids, but I feel it is not a burden. If you are to the point you are homeless, it is only the right thing to do for our parents, after all, they took care of us and kept a roof over our heads from birth until we were able to go out into the world and care for ourselves. That being said, Kris, you are my idol, my inspiration, my hope for the future. God Bless you and keep you safe. Hugs

Hello Kriss. I've been 'houseless' for a while. I appreciate your public servant announcement about "invisible homeless." CA rentals are exorbitantly HIGH! I'm 62 & find it hard to grasp working for pay & then give so much of it for a place U spend a small portion of time in. ☹️☹️☹️ I've been without a brick & mortar home for awhile now. I've lived in shelters, transitional homes/centers .....and the problems there is a lot of the residents are substance abusers & or have mental illness issues. I'm always the odd ball & get attacked bc I don't drink alcohol or smoke (anything). My mind feels free when I'm in my car - no disturbances! I can pray aloud, meditate & FOCUS! I'm praying now to be led to the right van for me. ThanX again for sharing.

I didn't know Nissan made a 3500, I've been looking at converting a 2500 for the same reason - it doesn't scream van dweller. I have a class B RV and I use the pine pellets as well. It actually does absorb with no odor. A 40Lb bag for $6 bucks lasts about six weeks.
What an amazing person and personality! Thank you, Kris!

Thanks for sharing info on the houseless. I believe that if you have stable, reliable and safe shelter - you have a home. It may not be the one others want, or what you dreamed of, but it's home. When you don't have stable, reliable and safe shelter, you're homeless. I lived in a converted bus for about a year and a half, and it was wonderful. When I had to give up living in the bus, I felt homeless. My next home was something more conventional, an apartment. I preferred living on the bus in the woods. AND A HOME DOES NOT HAVE TO BE STATIONARY!!!
I enjoyed meeting Kris and seeing her van. Wonderful!!!

I wish I were younger ( I’m 77) and new about van life. I watch all the videos and it really calls to me. I inherited a lovely mfg home which I’ve remodeled to be a beach house effect. I love it, good neighbors, a little rescue dog and friends. I’m lucky, I know. If my home is ever destroyed in a hurricane (I’m in Florida), I’m getting a van
I love your van setup. A suggestion you might find helpful - for hooks that will continually hold - go to an auto parts store and ask about the heavy duty magnetic hooks - these are very strong. I just subscribed to your channel 🙂. A blessed 2023 to you.

Persons who are priced out of the housing market, are classified as homeless in order to get a clear picture of the need across the nation. It is important to be counted so that cities and states can allocate funds for shelter and review housing policies. One contributer to the lack of housing is the rise of Air BnBs. Cities like Eureka Springs can no longer meet the need of local workers to have housing because the beautiful, historic cottages are all BnBs.
Thanks Kris for the wonderful insight fullness of what is important to be in this life and live it with dignity and respect. You really have opened my eyes and made me think even if I’m not considering a van life there were lessons to be learnt. Your an amazing lady and I wish you all the best with your endeavours 👍👏🙂

Sue, when you get on the road you will meet other van dwellers that will be willing to show you what they chose. Depending on the climates you are in, you may decide you do not need heating or cooling or lights. Starting with nothing and slowly adding what you decide you need is a good way to go. Best of luck and fun to you.
