It’s also refreshing that Faye didn’t engineer this out of spite to anyone or with an agenda or use Kratos like a pawn. She simply did it because she loved him and their son. She just wants her husband to be happy again and free of his pain. Sometimes, we just need to see genuine love like that again in our stories.

The reason this hits Kratos so hard is because throughout the game he starts fearing that Faye was only using him for her own agenda. He tried to keep having faith in her, his dialogue is always in defense of her, but the seeds of doubt were there. There was a chance he had unwittingly become someone’s else’s monster AGAIN. Used by someone he deeply loved, trusted, and admired… But when he sees this, that fear is destroyed, because Faye painted OVER the original prophecy. You can still see Kratos in Atreus’ arms and Thor standing over them underneath. But Faye painted her own version based on how SHE saw Kratos ❤️ She didn’t want to use him to kill gods, she didn’t even want to use him to save the world. She wanted him to be able to live a full life, overflowing with love instead of pain and rage. And she knew if he did that then the world would see the same man she saw ❤️ the one he could never see in himself. Even though he still felt like a monster the whole time they were together, even though he was still so distrustful of the world, she saw someone who wants to love, who WANTS to protect and give everything he has to those loved ones. Looking at this shrine, Kratos sees Faye DID truly love, admire, and trust him as much as he did her. And he sees the path that she saw, the one that deep down, he always wanted to walk.

  • @preds43

Not to mention he is a loved and respected God that everyone cares for. Even in the past games, the other gods hated him and fucked with him, and everyone else feared him, with only his Spartan army being akin to his "family", and they were still soldiers at the end of the day. Zeus saw to it that they were dealt with enough to fuck with Kratos some more...so much as to even end all of Sparta itself before Kratos battled the Sisters of Fate and went back in time...before Zeus did all that damage to his army. Kratos has a happy future ahead of him, a new life, where no one fears him, with a Son that is alive and well, with no gods actually hating him, and a bright future already scribed for him, a future that seems to have defied fate once more. Faye saved him. So of course he's gonna cry, I would to if I was Kratos. After everything that happened to that poor fucking soul, after a life of pain, loss, war, and chaos, he's finally able to not feel alone anymore. He's able to have friends, followers, allies that care for him, and don't see him as a damn monster or freak.

I was moved to tears myself when he saw his mural, and saw how he'd become a "rebuilder" instead of a "destroyer". Actor Christopher Judge mo-capping/voicing Kratos did a phenomenal job portraying the emotion in the scene. Kratos shaking and breathing hard as he struggles to contain himself being moved to tears? Ooof~! That hit me in the feels big time. Same when Freya and Mimir could tell just how shook up and moved Kratos was. They saw a profound shift in the man, and could not help but say "yes" when he asked if they'd follow him. Ah~! Dammit. More tears in my eyes. 😋

Its also a gut punch cause Kratos was beginning to doubt Faye. As we can see with lines such as “her secrets haunt every step of this path” while his instinct is to defend her honor there were those feelings of distrust and doubt taking shape in Kratos. But once he sees the path she put him on his feelings of doubt are erased as Faye went against her own people to give Kratos the chance to live a life of love instead of regret. He sees that Faye truly loved him and loved him so much she put him on the path of becoming a god who is accepted by all over being hated and feared.

Turned Fenrir into a lil pup, had jormungandr be sent away in a background scene, Ragnarok was rushed etc. felt real dumb, all that buildup in the 2018 game, woulda swore this would’ve been a dark story, building up all the giants and prophecies that would be shown. Thor dying to Jormun., Fenrir killing Odin, Atreus actually becoming Loki, it was literally just a nickname of his. Tbh the Norse story should’ve been a trilogy, GOW 6 being Ragnarok, and 5 is the buildup and execution of what was seen in the murals. Kratos “dying”, Asgard taking in Loki, and becoming adopted by Odin, becoming thor’s bro, etc. and we actually see how asshole the Aesir were made out to be. 6/10 wasted potential.

4:21 Some people will never understand how powerful is this scene for people who played this franchise since ps2, We all agree that even as the embodiment of war and destruction, life was unfair to kratos since the very beginning, we all felt this "Man, I wish he could get some peace at least" at some point, seeing him finally getting a good ending from all the torment just hits like a truck

The legacy of the series is what makes it so powerful. Kratos became more and more of a monster until his path of destruction literally destroyed the world. Godhood took everything from him and he turned that anger onto the world leading to the destruction of both at the end of GoW3. To see him overcome his form as a God of War and embrace his nature as a God of Peace is so powerful. One of the best stories I've ever seen.

Because he understands better than anyone else that maturity and healing is an ongoing process and that there he must firstly CHOOSE to walk that path. He must put the work into it. This is Kratos, father of atreus the champion of the jotunar, bringer of ragnarok, hero of the people. The journey for redemption this character has been on is like no other, and after 17 years of gaming history he finally has inner peace.

Kratos has had some of the best character development I've ever seen from a game series as old as God of War. We've seen him go from a man thirsting for power, to a killer, to a vengeful god, culminating to a father who's trying to find his own place in the world as well as his son's. Watching him struggle to be a proper father, failing at times, succeeding others, struggling to let go of his own past and to look forward to the future, then finally gathering the courage to allow Atreus to follow his own destiny, alone, because he knows they're both ready for it. This is fantastic storytelling, and future GoW titles have a lot to live up to if they want to be any bit as good as these two games have been.

Black and bloody and standing on a mound of bodies with blades of chaos in his hands, and when he saw this he was discussed by the site of it. Now, he is depicted as a golden idol, with Faye’s axe, a symbol of defiance against unjust forces, with people worshiping as, not a god killer, but a hero for them. Now, he is more then just a God of War, he is the people’s champion.

The frame of Kratos' back to us while centering Atreus starting at 3:00 is everything. It's probably my favorite bit of a scene in this game because it's a complete reversal of the Kratos we'd known prior to the newer games. Whenever you'd start up any pre-norse GOW (Ascension being the exception) game, the start up menu always featured Kratos being in the same place in frame. He'd be looking towards you, the player, filled with rage, vengeance, anger, and a thirst for bloodshed. Tainted with grief and guilt, and wounded. Behind him would usually be a scene of destruction, or something depicting a violent scenario. Whether it be in the midst of a sea storm, a large blanket of fire, or in the case of 3, the literal end of the world. It showing the path of vengeance and its consequences, as well as the world that Kratos exists in. One that's filled with pain, misery, and suffering, and it being a world that's hardened Kratos to such an extent that his humanity is barely distinguishable due to his actions. Kratos more often than not seemed more like a force of nature that was a god-made horror than an actual man. But here? We don't see any of that. Atreus being centered in the background instead of an image of destruction and the violent path that Kratos had left shows just how much Kratos has changed. We see a sort of humble and proud passing of the torch to Atreus as he ventures out on his own journey, and we don't see Kratos' face here. We see his back to us, as if he now sees a better world, with a light in it instead of endless darkness, facing not only the world in where restoration is a possibility, but also facing his own son, who he learned from just as much as Atreus learned from Kratos, and just as both learned from Faye. It also shows that Kratos in this world feels hope. He looks towards the world instead of leaving it behind him like when his main pursuit was vengeance. Kratos at this point has brought people together, rather than splinter them. And, rather than going on a journey to destroy, he wishes to rebuild. He went from being an entity of pure destruction, to one that is constructive, and is even loving enough to cry when his son journeys on his own. After having lived with grief for years even after the fall of Olympus, and not feeling he can be a good father, this shows the contrary to what he once believed and I fucking love it. While somber and bittersweet, it's more so a moment of triumph for a man who's suffered for so long. He might've defeated gods, but his mightiest challenge was always facing himself, and I'd say he was victorious.

Kratos turning from what he has feared he was not ready to do, raising and then letting go of Atreus, and finding he has become something he never imagined he could be is truly the greatest reward these games have been for those of us who saw his humanity even in the darkest of times.

Not sure how many realized this parallel with 2018 GoW: 00:37 Min, Kratos asks, _"Does it frighten you?"_ Atreus affirms that he is, to which Kratos responds, _"That is why you must do it."_ // A similar exchange of words occurred in the previous game, when Atreus was frightened of a golem and Kratos engages it in battle saying something like, _"You are scared, that is why we must fight it."_

It actually aligns with what Zeus had said back then. "The cycle ends here", "There is much to do", are phrases back when Zeus confronted his son, Kratos. It also signifies that Kratos is converted from a destroyer to a true ruler.

I am 33 years old, ive been playing playing GoW ever since it first came out. 33 years old, i cried watching this scene, seeing kratoss' life unfold; from being a vengeful man to a vengeful god, from grunting to everything to "boy", to understanding his son, their journey together, even finally referring to Mimir as "brother". A warrior, a vengeful god, a father, a friend, a true GOD OF WAR; Santa Monica Studios did justice to this character; there will never be a character development like this again
