33:33 ... $150,000 in 1974 had the purchasing power of $963,627 in todays dollars. so with the $20 million purses of today that means that the purses have increased 20x even accounting for inflation. there was a lot of interesting golf that was played between 1974 and the appearance of Tiger in 1997. Most notably Jack's win in 1986 at the Masters and all the Ryder Cup matches. Professional golf was in a good place and then Tiger came along and blew it all into the stratosphere. the Phil / Tiger rivalry was also a great thing.

Great episode. Always wanted to hear the roots of Augusta cutting the "Cord" story. As far as changes...even though Honda had a "weak" field, was far more exciting to watch guys getting a chance to make life changing money with a super tight finish, than it was to watch Scottie cruise to 5 stroke win in a "deep" field. True golf fans want to see great COMPETITIVE golf, regardless of who's there IMHO. Anybody in top 125 in world is a stud when he gets hot.

Those are facts!!! The weak tv ratings of LIV prove that. There's only one Tiger and he is the only current player that really drives the needle if he plays.

@@industrialpalletworx3548 I'm glad he doesn't play much. I hate it when they cover Tiger's every shot when he's not in contention. So boring. I watch LIV on the app and supposedly it was one the most Downloaded apps last month. Not sure TV ratings are as applicable here? Enjoyed the last LIV tourney a lot. 4 man playoff finish was pretty exciting.

@Andrew Philips I've tried watching LIV, and it's not my cup of tea. I would only add that when a company touts their own app as the most downloaded app over x amount of time. I personally wouldn't take that as gospel. I also suspect they're having viewer issues. The latest court filing released shows them complaining about the CW network and how they are second-rate. But if you like it watch it. My whole point was LIV was betting on household names and early on it doesn't appear to be paying off. I would have to believe there's an expiration date for ROI. Meaning at some point the Saudis are going to stop throwing money away if they aren't turning a profit.

Love the stories!!! Great stuff. Personally between the tour and LIV and the changes that are coming about. I wish the tour would do more for the mini tour players to help grow the talent pool. We always here the great stories of all the hard work players put in to get to where they are. But for every success story there's 1000 or more similar stories of players that had to quit or give up for whatever reason or another. I firmly believe golf is a sport that is learned and isn't a god given gift. A touch more help for minitour players will boost the skill and talent pool going forward. A better talent pool means better tournaments and better tv.

Love Peter's comments at the end about the changes and he's bang on in my view. The Tour has to retain their best players with monetary incentives somehow to stop them from jumping to LIV. But, like Peter said, they should have been honest about this.

Great video and I have more insight into 2024 pga new tournaments. As I understand it now is that if Liv went to 4 rounds per tournament then it's virtually the same as the pga? Liv would then be eligible for OWGR points as per PGA? What the pga have done now with the owgr is exactly the reasons given to Mark McCormack of the IMG company that set up a points system for their group of golfers and taking it off IMG. Of the seven board members that pay 50k each to finance the OWGR, five are from USA tours etc. The OWGR should be absolutely run totally independent of any tour and not set up to just be biased to the pga tour.

I think Peter is the closest to the truth in regards to the Tour. Their lack of openness and limited clarity is somewhat obvious. They have been reactionary, as any business would be when threatened by a new competitor, but they are acting as if it was something they had always planned to do. That's where they lack honesty IMHO.

Fans also root for the underdog. Maybe I don’t know but that is why we love the US Open and PGA, remember Nicklaus had the chance to win as an amateur in 60, and there have been others who make it to Sunday. That is why golf is better than other sports, dreams can happen. Are they stopping this? It’s a shame. And I’ll add my two cents about Watson. I respected the man as I did Nicklaus, but after Nicklaus supported trump and Watson was offended by a ‘wax’ analogy they have gotten too big for their positions. Play your game and let the public decide what they want to see. I don’t like a lot of the spectators on tour now, but I don’t hear Watson crying about cellphones. I’m glad Gary feels ok with Watson.

First time listening and my head is spinning. Avid player 4hdc so I know what missing the cut is, birdie, ect. The start of listening to old farts complaining is nothing new. Reading how important being positive to playing good golf - not negative is always confusing. As someone serious about the game, but understand it's just a game; McCord always gave a perspective of the importance of keeping it fun, which I enjoyed. From your direction of speaking to those that don't know what a birdie is to the complexity of today's PGA format; only Phil could explain.

33:25 ... and all this has come about because one man who agitated for change for years finally got his wish. and now there is a competitive force with the PGA Tour. the PGA Tour was like American car manufacturers for the 25 years after WW2. they were the only games in town. there were no German or Japanese cars in America so they had the car market sewn up. and you know what happened? they got complacent and started to produce only CRAP. when the German and Japanese companies entered the US market the American makers freaked out because the quality and the performance of the products coming from overseas embarrassed them. so the Germans and the Japanese ate the lunch of Detroit for 20 years. and they are still doing it because they let themselves fall behind. and without the fed. gov't to bail them out a few times GM and Chrysler wouldn't even exist. this is what is going on in professional golf. without LIV the PGA Tour would have remained complacent. all of a sudden their is more money and new formats being discussed. how did that all of a sudden happen? so all the guys on the PGA Tour that are now going to make $3.4 million by winning a tournament can thank Greg Norman. will LIV survive? I don't really care one way or another. I am simply happy for the players. the more opportunities they have to make money and get some recognition the better. this is why honest competition is good.

McCord being let go was a travesty and for what was such an innocuous comment like bikininwax - goes to show what the folks on the board at Augusta are really like. However, comparing the lack of support to that of Ben Wright - come on now. There's a big difference between what Gary said and a bunch of homophobic and misogynistic statements that Ben made. Gary's removal was an injustice. Ben's was completely deserved.

Elevated events are going to be bonified exhibitions outside of events that already have established prestige, will pro's get up for. The false narratives about not playing for money and only for legacy. The social marketing about how much the players are now paid, considering the talk towards LIV months prior. If the events have no cut, does that mean where they finish is worth more in regards to points. Should there be punishment for not performing in the elevated events/I think there should be to maintain interest and competitveness. If there isn't it's going to be an exhibition - I like great golf but if I have to tune into sunday's for theater the elevated events aren't it. For instance at AP invitational T39 was over par to last place. Is that performing for an elevated event? Fans of pgatour mock LIV for players for being over par and calling it an exhibition... Or is this the era no one has balls and calls people on there bs?
