I was in Kolkata for the first time as an adult last month. That Newmarket area (and north Kolkata in general) is one of the craziest places I've ever been. So chaotic, so draining, but so full of life. As a Canadian quite disconnected from my Bengali heritage, it made me hungry to learn more & also amazed that half my family comes from such a different place than I do. And hungry for more Kolkata food of course. What a fascinating place! Cheers Gabriel.

The Newmarket area used to be upscale and so much fun. Not the cheap packed area it is now, horrible. The fire, most think arson, destroyed it, the economy of Bengal was so bad the rich Marwaris, Parsees, etc left. The upscale (non-bengali, they are the ones with real money, bengalis spend it on food) need was not there. Now there is an upscale mall, but mostly foreign designers/merchandise. Not the posh atmosphere that Newmarket had.

These hand pulled 'rickshaws' only run ( in a limited radius) in Kolkata in India. However, u get these pre WWI transport in global cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong and maybe sm other Far Eastern cities as tourist transport and are expensive.. The origin of 'rickshaw' is Japanese [Rickshaw originates from the Japanese word jinrikisha (人力車, 人 jin = human, 力 riki = power or force, 車 sha = vehicle), which literally means "human-powered vehicle".]
Rickshaw driver is smart, he first demanded Rs 500/ - but comromised with Rs 200/- , for Indian passenger it may not have more than Rs 50/-.

Great video, Kolkata is one of my favourite places in India, the Howrah Flower Market is amazing. Another incredible market is the Fruit and Vegetable Market at Sealdah in Kolkata it has to be seen at night and is mind blowing. They unload the produce in groups to tribal music. Then carry huge amounts into the market whilst walking in unison. Just incredible. Take care Di from Downunder.

First time and god was that full on Varanasi from nepali border by local bus 30 rupees i think for 13 hrs, Gaya ( oh my lord ) , Bodhgaya for xmas day, 2 day train to Hardiwar then Rishikesh( so love this place used it as a chill out between missions), Rajasthan, Amritsar, Rishikesh, McCleod Ganj then Delhi to my mates wedding in Nagasaki. Never travelled further than Europe. before 39 years. best experience ever and before india, 3 months in Nepal trekked to ABC did a month long tefal course and two weeks in Tibet to Mount Kailash, go to Kailash dude , Im going back as i only got into the valley a cock up with the guide and rest days did me in sadly but so incredible. That was 2010 , then 2015back to Nepal EBC three weeks did the extra week walking to Lukla, then went across east nepal border into darjeeling, into Sikkim wonderful but had a close call with a guy showing me around some, gang attacked him, Sikkim otherwise was wonderful don't pick up random locals for guides lesson learnt, but everything is an experience, felt protected anyway, i was ok but full on, then Delhi and a wondrous time in Leh , Ladak Kalachakra in 2014. Went to Srinigar saw supposed tomb of Jesus and had a crazy messed up houseboat experience then more lovely Leh time, bus down to Manali , back to Dharamsala then home . @@deepblue3682 Long reign of the Communist Party in West Bengal pretty much drove all the heavy industries out of the state a long time ago. Maybe there are software companies and call centers now but West Bengal and Kerala are two states corporations ran away from a long time ago. They have a couple of steel plants in Durgapur and Asansol which used to be permanently on strike and unproductive, both public sector companies under SAIL and they recently ( as innlast decade) renovated the one in Asansol but they both were pretty old and antiquated and most importantly unproductive due to perennial strikes and poor working ethics of the employees. They also had CLW in Asansol that is a large locomotive factory that builds electric railway locomotives. But that is also a public company. Private companies are hesitant to invest in West Bengal and at least tourism is doing well for Kerala these days but people exit the state to find work elsewhere.
Wonderful video Gabriel🌻
Oh there must be lotsa things floating in that river I tell ya. Anyway that was a fascinating little tour of the city, thank you, much appreciated.
West Bengal has missed out on Indian economic boom due to political corruption in the state since 70s. Today most of its educated youth have migrated elsewhere for a better life.

The degree to which you penetrate the much more local, localised areas (of where you are) is commendable, indeed. Marigolds are the flowers I have been told you will see most often in India, which I have also been told are ceremonial (big at weddings).
Thanks dear, I am Vishal from Mumbai and after watching your video willing to be visit to Kolkata. Thanks 😊
Kolkata is a very large city.....!! These are the old part of Kolkata or colonial Kolkata, that's why everything is chaotic and over populated..... Kolkata is almost 4 times bigger than this old portion of the city....!! The modern and polished part of Kolkata is southern and eastern part of Kolkata...!! It will surely remind you of many modern cities of the west.
Thanks for the video, just booked up for there with a friend!
Amazing. Proper travelling. Thanks for videos. I think you need to find a nice Himalayan retreat to put your feet up for a few days....

@@subodh6268 Thanks for advise. I am a bit worried about that but I wanted the challenge. Being sick is a worry for me because I’ve experienced that before and it lasted 3 weeks. I lost a lot of weight. I’m doing this trip because it’s somewhere I’ve wanted to go since my early 20s and I now have a lot of Indian students in Melbourne, so it’s important for me to go.

India is a global flower essences industry that supplies perfume makers such as Dior or Chanel, those huge bags of petals are for that but the garlands are for worships, thst was a great shot from above 🤩
This is the place I dream of and make music about. My traveling man Gabriel. Thankyou 🙏🙏💖✨
Altogether awe-inspiring, in just about every sense 😊...! ~❤💖
Thank you for this video. What time of day are you travelling? The noise is INCREDIBLE! Is Kolkata always this loud or is it loudest in the area where you currently are?
That other bridge is the new Howrah bridge, this one had a rumour that it was cracking and may collapse, so they built the second one near kiderpore area. You could have seen the river by going to the Maidan area or known as Fort something and can see the whole view of Howrah bridge and the hoogly river.
Everyone hit that 👍🏻 up
I've visited this city 20 years ago. Love from Thailand.
What a surreal looking place. Mordern cars, old looking taxis/bus and people to carry you around.
Yesterday I was there in that bustling area near the Howrah bridge, as I was in a way for my work. Would you like to say in which time, had you been there through?

The intensity and vibe of Kolkata can't be found in any other in India.
Gabriel speaks English slowly and carefully. It's the sign of someone who has spent a lot of time with those who speak English but not as their first language.
That part where you got out of the yellow cab is called Burra bazaar Asia's biggest wholesale market and the flowers you saw are in Mullick ghat Asia's second largest flowers market.
