Koko's Sense of Humor
Koko liked to make jokes. She enjoyed the reaction they would get. In the first clip Penny reads Koko a card that was sent in by some children. They want to know if Koko has a middle name. Koko responds to the question by signing that her middle name is “devil.” Koko could certainly be a little devil at times, expressing her contrarian and mischievous side.
Later, Koko calls Penny a “gorilla,” then Koko rushes off for a game of tickle chase - cause that’s what gorillas do.
Note that only Gorilla Foundation founders Penny and Ron went inside with Koko throughout her life, as they were present with her from the age of 1. All other gorilla caregivers remained outside the mesh and communicated with Koko via sign language and spoken English.
Video Credits: Filmed by Dr. Ronald Cohn, Gorilla Foundation co-founder, 1990 (Koko at age 19). From videos 413 and 426 of the Koko Archive (KokoArc).

And seemed thrilled that Penny chased...then stopped for the, okay, what now.
One of the funniest stories I ever heard about Koko was from a Ted Talk on "How to spot a liar" with Pamela Meyer. She told of how Koko once ripped a sink from the wall and then blamed it on her kitten.

It was actually a human worker named Kate who was quite slim and unlikely to break the sink by sitting on it. But when asked, "Who broke this sink?" Koko replied, "Kate bad there."
Lol! That 2nd joke got me, I sincerely laughed at that. Koko tricked her into going into the cage, so then she was the gorilla. xD
She was amazing. And will never be forgotten.
May Koko's message live on, and hope Penny is well.

Penny, the one who was accused by multiple people of sexual harassment?
How could you turn that down? Koko just made you an "honorary" gorilla, and you just blew it off.

Lol unfortunately the science had to come first. Likely koko is just making a joke but if penny messed up michael or koko's definition of their own species she would never hear the end of it.
"penny.. is a human" RIP Koko u'll always be my number one celeb hehe
I miss her

I miss you, Koko. I keep a photo of you using a remote control while watching TV right next to my TV. Thank you for coming into our world ❤️
I've been on Koko's mailing list for 20+ years and happily just learned she was on KZread. May her legacy live on.
Penny: „Penny is a human!“ Koko: „I know. 🤦♀️“
There must be a movie made about this relationship 💕

I've seen a few videos of koko now. 1 of the best I really enjoyed was with Robin Williams. It was so touching as you could see Robin was so at peace . This video had me laughing as you see Koko being so cheeky. So nice and thank you for sharing this moment
to echo many here, truly miss Koko. she was very special. I am not forgetting her family, Dr Penny and the team. Hope they are doing well. Can't imagine that loss being easy to deal with.
I’m glad this Channel is still up and running.
They were so fortunate to have had each other! N Man I would’ve loved to have met koko!! She is reason I’m so obsessed with gorillas I think! Haha. 🦍🦍🦍🦍
Thank you for a new video from koko❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

She understands spoken English. Apes(except humans) can learn languages but they can't speak well(there are records that shows talking chimpanzees)
Amazing to be able to see how smart "KOKO" can be!!!😉💖💖💖

Man, I wish Koko was still doing strong today.
Koko was awesome, but she couldn't understand English. Her responses were trained behaviors.
So cute
That was so perfect
Dear Koko. We miss her.
Wonderful
Koko's reaction after she call her trainer the Gorilla qas like she said " Wayyyy, are you having that! Hahaha"
The best animal this planet has ever seen bi far 👍
💜
What wonderful sweethearts! Penny you will see her again! Or heavan would not be what it is supposed to be.
The way she asked what her middle name was the 3rd time kinda freaked me out she asked so demanding 😅
gorgeous.
Amazing
Koko was very special.
Lucky and best job ever
lol
I will miss ❤Koko, I’ve seen her videos and heard her stories since I was little.
Koko war ein ganz armes Tier, das sein Leben artwidrig als Versuchsobjekt, verbringen musste 😢😢😢
They are gorgeous, this is the only thing in life that gives me hope. The population of this absolutely beautiful planet are blind.
bring back Koko and Penny - two lovely souls
You gorilla! That's a wonderful honour for her, that's acceptance
Breaks my heart to see this majestic being locked up in that cage. He should be free in the jungle where he belongs. You guys should be ashamed of yourself.
What a special animal...cleverer than most people..
We love Koko 🥰
Did Koko ever get outside to climb trees to swing or run flat out in a field? OR was she caged up inside like a science experiment?
Human should have said... Yes i am gorilla and laughed Koko would have smiled that her joke was a hit.
😄👍🙏🤗💕😘😘😘💖
‘U sista’ she said!
What a beautiful woman! And gorilla
I miss Koko💜💜💜

A cousin of mine was a gorilla keeper (?) at the Detroit Metro Zoo for years, the stories he told of their strength was mind blowing. H
❤❤❤
É um doce ! Uma amor! ❤🥰😇😇😇
“ you gorilla “
I don’t think koko was truly signing , most of it was mimicking , or she fills in the rest of the sentence with her own words and explanations
Remember when she called Penny a green s_ _ -? I forget why. I just remember Koko’s response.
Sad she was imprisoned this way , she always wanted little ones of her own and held that grief in her until she passed : (
Коко.
Sweetie
Koko, I think wanted to play "gorilla" with penny.
🤗
poor koko. No jungle insight. Nor other apes. I am sorry
I remember in 1964 aged 4, my grannie and uncle took me to the Edinburgh Zoo, i watched as a Gorilla began eating and chewing some green vegetation, then it started to pick it's nose and eat it, then it's eyes just stared at me, i was frozen stiff with fear and i just could not stop looking at it, then it looked away and walked off. Ever since that day i have been scared of them.
I wish I could hang out with a gorilla
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Chissà cosa pensa Coco , essendo un essere superiore agli umani di noi poveretti che cerchiamo di capire con la mente ciò che solo il cuore puo' spiegare...
Isn’t that the koko George was named after? kkrrruuugggeerr !
I miss Koko :(
Is that Kobe?
It took them longer to find the male gorillas that would hide deeper in the jungle. They were so much larger than the females tgat they thought they were a seperate species.
It was fun to see Robin Williams and Fred Rogers interact with Koko, but there is no way I would have gone in and sat down with a full grown gorilla. They were much braver than me. The same goes for Penny.
Is there any better example of an animal communicating with a human? What a fun job Penny had with Koko.
@garfoonga1

Theres a famous grey parrot, kanzi the the chimp, bonobos are also being studied. Some dogs also, but they use buttons to play recordings of words. Though there is nothing conclusively saying that any animal has capacity for language
koko has to deal with a blonde, poor koko
koko forgot "kill all humans"
They should e all free
Is this communication or just game playing ?
lets keep the most intelligent gorrilla to possibly ever exist.. locked up!!!
Where’s the video where Coco calls lady a toilet??
Boy that human sure knows how to ruin a joke. Why on earth wouldn’t she agree with Koko
Ok if you say so
All animals can communicate. Very few people can. It starts with attention and observation. Animals do it all the time. People... not so much. To be able to hear what someone else is saying, one needs to stop talking.
Hilarious, until he rips your face off!
Feel bad for Koko, she was being talked down to in an annoying baby-voice, plus she lived in a messy prison cell.
She put her in the cage to understand that gorillas (in her mind) wete nothing but a locked up animal...then she stood outside of the cage like a human...saddd 😢
It looks the same but more intellect and humour than Australian Aboriginee, I am convinced the natives in Australia are the missing link between humans and apes - really !
feels like a sad video tbh
Sorry to say but Koko couldn’t communicate like we thought she could most of the time she would just make random hand signals or repeat sign language and wait for a response. Most of the time trainers would just pull mental gymnastics and think she said something profound or intelligent when in actuality Coco was just trying to get attention or a treat. While I do agree that Coco had some intelligence above gorillas she was not on par with humans in communication or intelligence it was more or less just a publicity stunt to get people to donate to charities meant to save gorillas in the wild and to get people to visit the zoo that she was located in.
