Kojima vs. Konami: An Investigation

Ойындар

UPDATE: TOO HOT FOR KZread!!! THE VIDEO KONAMI DOESN'T WANT YOU TO SEE!!!
A month ago, it was revealed that Kojima likely won't stay at Konami after the end of the year. Here is a summary of what we know so far, plus what I've found out.
Here are transcripts from the source. Note that I've highlighted the claims that seem more interesting, as not all of them sound believable: i.imgur.com/wZrhM7V.jpg
Also, hours before uploading, after this video had been completed, Silent Hills was announced to be officially cancelled: kotaku.com/its-official-silent...
This video uses music from audiomicro.com
And the incompetech.com/ tracks "Echoes of Time" & "Twisted"

Francis York Morgan At this time It's not clear if Konami pulled the strike or if KZread stepped in and actually did it's fucking job. Pretty sure it's the first one, Konami be cuhraaazy. Edit: Never mind, apparently Konami pulled the strike after SBH sent them emails. Weird. Edit 2: Never mind again, now apparently the strike was removed because it was "missing required information." Konami sucks so hard they can't even abuse the DMCA correctly.

Francis York Morgan It makes perfect sense. Since the video is released without approval of Konami, the legal team probably asked for it to be pulled while they reviewed it. Then depending on response from management, they will either allow it (as it happened in this case), or ask for it to be pulled completely...its pretty normal business practice...

None of these claims will surprise me if they turn out to be true, especially when it comes to executives hating each other and letting that influence business decisions. Similar rumors have floated about for years involving Guy Cihi, and my own dealings with Konami have given me a good sense of how petty they can be. From what I've heard myself, they basically let egos run roughshod over there.

The Newbie Gamer They blacklisted me in an incredibly cowardly way, refusing to deal with me personally and using proxies. Their contempt for me and my criticism of their business practices was so bitter that they actually fucked over WayForward Studios in the process - refusing to let me publish an interview for a game that WayForward really wanted to see published, just because they didn't like me. I actually had to be snuck over to Konami's booth at E3 to check out a game that the devs really wanted me to check out. I won't go into ALL the details here (especially as I gotta save something for later) but the impression I got of the company and the information relayed to me paints a picture of a petty-minded, ego-driven company that will burn its own house down over a personal slight.

I really hope Kojima takes his staff and goes indie instead of quitting the industry all together. I'm kind of glad that 5 is going to be the last Metal Gear game, but I hope he actually does develop an honest to God horror game in the future or perhaps some type of spiritual successor to Metal Gear or Zone of the Enders.

td82394 I agree. MGS is incredibly unique because it "feels" like an indie game with the AAA resources. Kojima's personality is all over the franchise, just like the indie developers put their own personalities in their products. I believe Kojima's games as an indie developer would still appeal to a lot of peope, even if they aren't stealth/horror ou anything like he has ever done before. As long as he keeps putting his personality into the games, they will be gold.

After nearly 28 years of Metal Gear, I'd be completely okay with the franchise, if not the main series here. The guy has been doing the same schtick for almosf 30 years- don't you think he deserves to do something other than that now? ZoE was a cool look into what Kojima can do when hes not doing MG.

DarkStarAngelo Yeah, I agree. I do feel sorry for Kojima, but Konami has a track record of ruining their best IPs. In a really fucked up way though, this is kind of what Kojima's wanted for "Metal Gear" ever since the second game. Im pretty sure he doesnt want the franchise to be milked to death or get fired from his cushy executive job at Konami, but he has always wanted to leave the franchise behind to focus on new games while letting somebody else take the creative reins of the series, and now, he's better suited to do that than he ever could have been underneath Konami's heel.

Now that metal gear survive has come and gone, the quote about them wanting to burn mgs to the ground makes even more sense. They basically shit out a game with minimal budget and effort, reusing as many assets from mgs5 as they could get away with. And since it had the Metal Gear name on it, (so long as the budget was low *enough*) it was almost guaranteed to turn a profit. Essentially the final game in the Metal Gear series is nothing but a giant spiteful middle finger pointed at Kojima.

Looking at all the video games Konami has developed since the company's inception, it almost feels like there's some sabotage going on. There hasn't been a house-developed Contra game since 2004, Silent Hill has all been butchered (especially with that godawful HD collection), and the Lords of Shadows games are such ridiculous far cries from the rest of the series (both the platformers and the MetroidVanias). While the source's rumors should of course be taken with a grain of salt, I fully believe that the highest-ups have no interest in making quality video games anymore, and would rather just stick to mobile and casino gaming. Without Kojima, without Team Silent, without Igarashi- I suspect that their console/PC game development will almost cease altogether by 2025.

Most of Konami's designers have slowly left the company. Capcom has its shitty side too but the difference is they from time to time still focus on making quality games, Konami shafted that to the sidelines. ***** Dk64 and Banjo Tooie being of poor quality or not (even though I think they're not that good) is not based on any fact, just an opinion you hold. What is a fact is that people were disbanding shortly after a game's release, such as Goldeneye and Perfect Dark 1, so key people were already moving out. So by the time Microsoft got them, most of the people who created multimillion selling games were already gone. Then you have Grabbed by Ghoulies and Viva Pinata, games coming out at a time where cutesie platformers were out of vogue in in favor of shooters.

Felix Ironfist Turns out Valve has lost the fight for paid mods. Alden from Steam Workshop, "We're going to remove the payment feature from the Skyrim workshop. For anyone who spent money on a mod, we'll be refunding you the complete amount. We talked to the team at Bethesda and they agree. *We've done this because it's clear we didn't understand exactly what we were doing.* We've been shipping many features over the years aimed at allowing community creators to receive a share of the rewards, and in the past, they've been received well. It's obvious now that this case is different. To help you understand why we thought this was a good idea, our main goals were to allow mod makers the opportunity to work on their mods full time if they wanted to, and to encourage developers to provide better support to their mod communities. We thought this would result in better mods for everyone, both free & paid. We wanted more great mods becoming great products, like Dota, Counter-strike, DayZ, and Killing Floor, and we wanted that to happen organically for any mod maker who wanted to take a shot at it. But we underestimated the differences between our previously successful revenue sharing models, and the addition of paid mods to Skyrim's workshop. We understand our own game's communities pretty well, but stepping into an established, years old modding community in Skyrim was probably not the right place to start iterating. We think this made us miss the mark pretty badly, even though we believe there's a useful feature somewhere here." steamcommunity.com/games/SteamWorkshop/announcements/detail/208632365253244218

Even if Angry Joe bashes the game and exposes all the exploits... Even if J.Sterling explains all the sick undertones to the whole affair... Even if TB warns everyone not to support that shitty process... Even if Bunnyhop makes another very descriptive video on the subject... People will still push money into Konami pockets, cause "Ohhh! DarkStarAngelo The problem is, they won't fuck up. They're making the logically smartest decision. Imagine, for a moment, that you own a powerful amnesiac. You're also an accomplished psychologist. You know someone who witnessed a gruesome murder. They're traumatized. They want you to help them come to terms with what they saw. Normally, you'd provide therapy for that person and try to help them come to terms with their problem. Sure they'll have psychological scars for life, but they learn to live with their problems. From a purely logical stand point, wouldn't it be easier to simply administer a powerful amnesiac, regardless of their consent?? Put them under the moment they tell you, give them the needle and BAM, no more problem, get back to work? It's a considerably more effective solution, even if it's not the nicest thing in the world to do? Art and fun are helpful, but absolutely not necessary for success. Not when you take efficient enough steps to succeed. It's absolutely heartbreaking that nobody just tries to be crazy in the gaming industry anymore. Gaming has been around for so long that it's an established business, so there's a set groundwork for it, and we'll never get huge, big-name games with the same spirit you can only find in indie titles nowadays.

Scrustle Have you taken a look at the very new Igarashi-developed Castlevania's spiritual successor on Kickstarter? The minimum funding goal is only 10% of the whole cost of making it, meaning that the other 90% is to come from established investor funds - thus implying that he's got a publisher backing his 'big new game'! So you'll be seeing more big games coming from Japan for a while.

This is awful. Silent Hills looked awesome, and I can't believe I didn't get the demo before it went down :( Given how big Kojima/his studio was for a while, it's hard to believe he won't just launch his own thing come December.

It wasnt hard to predict, MGS is full of spinoffs (Acid 1 & 2, Rising, Ghost Babel) and considering that Konami said "We're not going to do big budget games anymore" it was due to happen, cheap spinoffs from his best seller names. I was expecting either a remake or a spinoff, although I didnt predict a zombie game. Turns out, seeing the trailer if its cheap it might be fun, its still the MGSV gameplay wich was the good part about it.

I found out about this piece elsewhere online and really enjoyed the presentation and the forthcoming nature in which you disseminated the materials and information you have. I strongly believe that Konami is going to break away from console game development at the very least. The company's other operations are advancing (they make some very nice slot machines) and AAA console game development just isn't generating the return on investment that it once did-- thanks to rising overhead costs. Mobile development is a cheaper play and mobile games are thriving in many areas of the world, including in Japan and the United States. The truth about the damaged/destroyed relationship between Hideo Kojima and Konami brass will hopefully come out some day... it would make for a fascinating read. Thanks for your excellent work.

I work in the gambling media industry, and George's video seems to be consistent with what I'm hearing from those working in the far east on industry development. Japan is a massive market in waiting, and very well suited to online/computer based gambling. I can see why Konami would want to be leading the charge, but unless there is a significant moral issue for Kojima (or a company wide financial issue), I can't see why these actions are happening. Why cut out a revenue source the size of Kojima's games? Yes, they are expensive, but they still show a profit. I doubt we'll ever know what's really going on, but the one thing I do know is, George's video is the best bit of journalism I've seen on it so far.

    >Dance Dance revolution team has been merged with unrelated audio engineers You seem to not know the first thing about the BEMANI franchise. That's okay, many people don't, despite it being their third largest franchise, as you say. The BEMANI franchise has, for the longest time, shared audio engineers. What is considered as the "Dance Dance Revolution audio team" only consists of two composers, and more than half of the new songs in the series come from composers who aren't part of the team. Having the audio team merged is, in my opinion, a wonderful thing for the BEMANI franchise, as it will allow composers to create songs without being worried what game it should be put in (and, in effect, what genre the song should be).
