I usually use a mooching rod and reel when trolling coastal waters. I feel like I am more successful landing salmon using these rods and reels.

I use a mooching rod and reel to troll salmon and other species all the time in coastal waters, it is pretty common in British Columbia and some parts of Alaska. Periodically I pick up a halibut trolling like this, but the gear can still work. I have caught halibut over 60 pounds with this combo in the past.
