Kobo Clara Colour vs Clara BW Comparison - Kaleido 3 vs Carta 1300

Ойын-сауық

Here's a comparison between the Kobo Clara Colour with a color E Ink screen and the Clara BW with a black and white E Ink screen. Both devices are basically identical aside from the screen, but there's one other huge difference too.

KOBO BW by far. The lightness of the background, the crispness of the screen, the sharp text, the black and bold fonts. It just pops out and it’s easier on the eyes. This is really a no-brainer when reading text. Sure if you’re into comics, manga then color might work better for you, otherwise 99% of the time BW eReader.

I was able to compare them in Chapters store. The crispness of Clara BW texts are amazing to look at but Kobo Colour is not that far off

Glad I bought the BW! When u had a closeup side-by-side in dark mode, the letters were noticeably crisper on the BW.

Thank you for this comparison! I'm not gonna lie, color is reaaaally nice and I agree it's a bit of a bummer to not be able to see the covers in color... But I probs still get the BW because most of the time I'll be reading text. I think the new Carta 1300 will be better than the Kaleido screen for now.

I know it's probably harder for you to get your hands on these devices but I'd be interested how the new Kobo colour devices Clara Colour and Libra Colour compare to the Tolino lineup that is obviously based on them. Tolino Shine Color and Tolino Vision Color. In Germany these are often a good default pick because public libraries work out of the box with these but _not_ with the Kobos :/ Sadly, because I think the Kobo software is a bit better than the Tolino software we get.

For some reason I do not have colored book covers on the home page. The book covers display in color when opening them though.

I think o the dual core might be faster for loading books, but not for turning pages because it has to deal with 2x the pixels, a set for the E-ink screen and a set for the filter layer.

Thank you for such a detailed video review. I have been planning to buy a ereader for a long time. Before that, I wanted to buy a Kobo Libra 2 because the screen is very nice and almost similar to a paper book (I choose Kobo because of their screen too). I don't know, between the screen of Kobo Clara B&W and Kobo Libra 2, in terms of display screen, which one will be more like a paper book and more comfortable for the eyes? Thank you.

The screens are so similar you're really not going to notice a difference between then unless you have them side-by-side with the same settings. Both are very good, but blacks are just a little bit darker on the Libra 2's screen.

It's hard to compare the background color. It seems the review had one with the warm light on the whole time?

I've spent over 20 hours reading 5 books on my Libra Colour so far and I have no regrets. The color filter does not bother me when reading and I would find it very difficult to use a BW e-reader after experiencing color covers, menus, and illustrated content.

  • @laquishab2605

I think it really comes down to where and when you’re reading. The colour would be easier on the eyes when you’re reading at night, as you’re supposed to reduce blue light before bedtime. But, if you’re reading mostly in the daytime with a lot of natural light or outdoors on the go, the BW would definitely be a better option in that environment.

You get use to the colour filter pretty quick. I hated it out of the box and a week later I feel like I was exaggerating
