2002 NBA Finals Game 3, June 9, 2002 | One of Kobe's best career Finals games. With the Lakers looking to take a commanding 3-0 series lead, Kobe came to Continental Airlines Arena with a purpose. He poured in an efficient 36 points shooting 14-23 from the floor combined with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Of his 36, Kobe scored 12 big points in the 4th quarter to weather a storm by the Nets that seemed like it would send the teams into game 4 in a 2-1 series. Instead, after multiple daggers delivered by #8, the Lakers took the insurmountable 3-0 lead with a chance to close out the three peat in game 4.

It's not fair how people talk about Kobe. Hes was already the best but was asked to sacrifice stats for team success early in his career. If he had no shaq his stats would have been way better.

Ik I'm a year late but, that's what makes it more interesting, since even if he was the second option, he still put up identical numbers to Shaq. He's just too polarizing by the people that they try to diminish or underrate anything he's done. His averages and playoffs numbers with Shaq proved enough that he could too. There was times Shaq asked him to drop 40 a night.

@@realniggasteve8429. I just don’t understand where this polarization comes from. I’m apart of this “new era” but I was able to watch Kobe growing up. Like where are these other people my age or younger, getting these narratives from? Now you see some ppl say he’s not even top 10, when I remember he was clear cut in top 3-5 at least.

I wish Kobe could have played this well in more Finals games, especially 2004 and 2008 but even the wins in 2009 and 2010. Having 7 rings and 4 FMVPs would have definitely put him as #2 all-time, IMO.

Pay attention. The media will give you a some bs arbitrary stat like “with less than 22 sec left with his team down by 2 or less in games played after 7pm CST, when the weather was greater than 88 degrees, Kobe was 0/5.” Just to force feed you their false narrative that he wasn’t as clutch as ppl think. Clutch is also keeping the lead and not letting your team trail when have the lead in a close game with time running out in the 4th. It’s also making plays on the defensive end. Those of us who never let the media teach us the game of basketball know exactly what we saw. RIP Kobe.

You gotta remember Shaq was a media darling...funny, charismatic, a big jokester. Everybody loved his personality, especially the media. Kobe was the antithesis, serious, focused, determined, confident....always looking to improve his game. So he had a lot of haters probably on his own team as well as the NBA. And to make matters worst for Kobe, he’s following in MJ’s footsteps and we all know how the media love MJ. But Kobe was just as instrumental if not more so than Shaq. You just have to know basketball and not follow the spin control narrative.

I’m tired of the disrespect Kobe has received. He literally dominated from age 19 and until he retired. Those 3 titles when he was 21,22, and 23, he was as much responsible for winning those as Shaq. Shaq played with an all star cast in Orlando and got swept in the NBA finals. Shaq getting 3 MVP in the finals was unfair, Kobe dominated philly and the nets and should have won the mvp. His 25,7,7 against philly and 27, 5, 5 against the nets. He did that feeding Shaq all the time. I won’t even get into how he decimated the western conference to get to the finals.

Kobe was phenomenal and clutch in this series, Shaq is the best player but Kobe's development and his ability to be fast and create his own shot makes the Lakers much harder to defend because without Kobe that they can zone in on Shaq. At the same time Shaq's presence created driving lanes for Kobe and wide open looks. Which I continue to say Shaq and Kobe complimented each other so well. The leader of this team was Phil Jackson hands down.

15 shots in game 2, 23 shots in game 3 WHAT A FUCKING BALL HOG Kobe’s career is really from 2000-2013 (14 seasons total) in that time he got injured one season and couldn’t play in the playoffs, (13 seasons left) 3 seasons he had the worst supporting cast I’ve ever seen with Smush Parker/Kwame Brown as starters (10 seasons left) in 2003, 2011, and 2012 he lost to the team that made it to the finals from his conference and 2-3 teams won the championship, (7 seasons left) 7 of his seasons he went to the finals and won 5-7 so if you break it down in the prime of his career his team went to the championship a little more than every other year 7/13, and the only time they didn’t go to the championship was when he lost to the team that made it to the championship, unless you literally gave him the worst supporting cast ever, and when he got to the championship he won 5-7
