I'm uncertain if I would give the book credit for it as the Dark Legion is far more in the right than the original myth with was born out of German Generals post WW1 trying to save face and pin the blame on the Democrats (with Hitler latter adding Jews on the "to blame" list for his own idiotic believes) And I say this because really the Dark Legion was born because the response to 1 guy abusing technology spooked so much that they the counsels new "Anti Advance technology" Law already declared a Sega Genesis was already to advanced (no joke they literally took the soon to be dark Legions leaders Sega Genesis) Mind you Ken would cause so many contradiction and really bad moral implications with this plot point latter on in the Knuckles series that I can understand if one wants to forget about it but it was written that way shown throw objective flashback scenes that lead to the birth of both the Dark Legion and the Brotherhood of Guardians.

The real reason Knuckles and Locke were pushed so heavily by Penders is because he had a rocky relationship with his own father and was self-inserting himself and his dad into the comic.

damn that’s actually sad. i actively try to be mindful and keep my mother issues OUT of my own personal creative writing; seeing as one of my characters is a mother with something of an adoptive son, i keep the projection factor to a minimum and be sure not to let it become a super unrealistically perfect relationship but yeah penders might not be the most super amazing person, but still, that kinda makes me feel bad. like the dude above me said, hope it helped him in some way

Guys hold your horses, thats because it was Ken Penders in the helm there. Once Ian Flynn(the current writter at IDW) got in, the stories got better. Besides sonic lore wasnt exactly set in stone back in the 90s, we had 2 canons, the jp and western canons. Everything was only going to sort itself out with Adventure. Flynn also had to do a lot of damage control to put the story back on its axis, but even so....

If his tweets are to be belived - and considering some of the crazy stuff he's posted that he needn't have ever shared - Ken Penders did run these ideas by the editorial staff before writing the story. I think he wanted to have an Alfred J. Kwak style scenario that explained WW2 through the lens of cartoon critters but didn't quite stick the landing.

Dont forget that this Story was later the whole catalist for the penders Sue against sega and it lead to him taking all his characters that he created, causing the restructuring of the whole sonic comic going in to IDW comics

Ah, this reminds of that time Knuckles overdosed on the Chaos energy and became very green for several arcs. And also turned into basically Echidna Moses, leading a tribe of stranded echidnas to the promised land, across the ocean (though he wasn't parting it, just gave everyone the ability to walk on water, but still)

To be honest, its stuff like this is why a character liked Julie Su irked me a bit. She was a member of techno fascists cult and yet she gets so upset when people bring it up. Wasn't it only Vector who brought it up most of the time? For the most part, the Chaotix trusted her as did a lot of characters. Vector was the only one who had distrust of her and I will admit it was entertaining.

I've never read Fleetway's shit and I don't want to. Fuck Fleetway. I grew up with the Archie Sonic comics, starting with issue 57 all the way back in 1998. I also collected the Knuckles comics starting with issue 12 (if I remember correctly). I always love the Archie Sonic comics and Archie Knuckles comics no matter what.

The only good thing about Archie is showing these to someone who only knows the games and seeing their WTF reactions to everything.

Archie Sonic purists will often overlook this kinda stuff when saying their usual "Oh the games would be so much better if they took from the comics. Everyone has character, plots mean something, Shadow is more of a person, there's more things at stake, the Freedom Fighters might be even better characters then half of Sonic's friends..." Of course, they also happen to be leaving out the King we're supposed to relate with trying to bring mass genocide on a certain group of people, Sonic's relationship problems, Knuckles becoming Christ, spotlights on useless characters (I mean a lot of characters in this comic can barely take out a single Badnik or have anything special when nearly everyone in the game verse can) and REALLY questionable choices and stories that drag on.

I think you should also have mentioned that the Dingo's are also usually portrayed as Nazi's and that the "good guy" guardians also considered the Dingo to be a lesser species to them self. Because these 2 information's make the whole story you summarized here even more fun to consider Also I'm actually more okay with the "Mein Kampf" quote as that one at least makes sense for the character he attributed it to say with it beging added in enough ways to make it properly fit his story. But the poem doesn't fit at all. As Robotnik NEVER did anything to the Echidna's up to this point and they refusal to get involved with the other issues in the world did also never screw them over so far ether. It wouldn't be till like 5 years latter with Karl Boller's "Return to Angle Island" story line that this rewritten poem comes even close to fitting into the comic's story.

Oh and Don't worry folks it gets worse you should do a video on those few comics when knuckles turns green and is the messiah

Actually it wasn't just " a few" comics. Knuckles turned Green in Sonic 90 and outside the occassional peak of alter universe, mis coloring, or flashbacks, he wouldn't be properly "Rad Red" again as a living Mobian until... 125. Yeah Knuckles was either green or DEAD for about THREE YEARS of the comic run. Not to mention the whole messiah "Avatar" story was actually something that happened later so turning green and being the Avatar are two totally different stories.

Again a lot of this went over my head when I was a kid even reading this in highschool, It was all just another day in Sonic land. Just glad IDW has a clear story that's devoid of real world politics, Just Sonic saving the world from Eggman while having other characters have their own stories to tell, Sure Sonic can't lose or cry and what not or have family, in fact non of the Sega characters can have families but unlike Sonic they are allowed to have emotional break downs, seeing Sonic's friends get utterly broken when Eggman is at his worst shows how much of an impact Sonic makes, However the Metal virus shows showed us a gimps of Sonic at his weakest, sure Sega said Sonic can't lose but didn't save the writers can't have him go on one hell of a journey to finally save the world. As for Knuckles, I think they need to take a page of the movie's Knuckles but from what I have seen they finally pulled Knuckles away from being an idiot and being the Knuckles we know.

I should add the quote "we were stabbed in the back" actually comes from Ludendorf. Ludendorf was one of the main generals in Germany during WWI and laid the philosophical foundations for what the nazis would later believe. The stab in the back myth predates the Nazis so far that it's origins can be found immediately after the treaty of Versailles. Mein Kampf was only one text that alludes to that kind of thing, but even before Hitler and the nazis, disdain for the Jews was not uncommon and growing. With all that said, most of the Echidna quote seems to be embellished after the initial direct quote and probably has elements from mein kampf mixed in.

Yeah technically at this point in the story The Dark Legion (who quite honestly have always had a splash Of Nazi influence in their portrayal the 22-24 "Political Thriller" arc of the Knuckles comic just amped that up) never actually have had control over the Master Emerald. They have made several attempts over the centuries to take control over the emerald but they obviously all resulted in failure. Furthermore, the Master Emerald at the time of Knuckles 22-24 was actually a relatively new concept being produced introduced only in universe... maybe a few months ago (couple of years our time) and honestly the story of how the Master Emerald formed in the Archie Sonic Universe is probably worth another one of these videos. It doesn't get as... facist as this but it's still pretty wonky if you think about it.

Just binged all your sonic lore videos and it's probably one of my favorite types of videos, i like how you don't drag it out and go straight for the point. Really well made content, hyped for more in the future :)

To my knowledge all of the characters that got removed were of Penders making. Ian created more characters after they pulled a soft reboot to the comics to give a quick retcon to still try and keep the then current story going.

There is no hard evidence of this yet, but there is a lot of rumors, hearsay and speculation that Sega of America is *forbidding* Flynn from using any redesigned versions of either the SATAM characters or anyone from Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog. It could be because of loser writer Ken Penders and the shame Sega of America has over losing that infamous lawsuit or it could be an extension of Sega Of America’s restrictions that kept Flynn from using Fang the Sniper, Bark The Polar Bear, Ray the Flying Squirrel, Mighty the Armadillo, that Sega of America doesn’t want characters from the 90’s games that haven’t made appearances in media with a “modern design” Sonic, outside of that recent 30th anniversary special, that is.

Ooooh wow. They (Ken) did my boy Knuckles dirty. Glad I missed out on any of whatever the heck they were doing with him in the comics. I just remember renting comics from my library as a kid and checking all the cool art but I got like, the Riders adaption, some random comic with Mina the mongoose, and some other stuff but never this lol. Super crazy this stuff went along and got published but I guess that's because Sega/Sonic Team weren't really paying too much attention to it at the time.

i would actually argue penders was a net positive on sonic lore because he gave us a bunch of batshit crazy ideas which let Flynn fix the bad ones and urge out the good. A lot of Ken's ideas were good, but he got bogged down in the personal stuff, exchanging character arcs for romantic drama

Why does this story mark sound like it would be 1000 times better if the evil ww2 echidnas were replaced by daleks and it was a weird doctor who crossover fanfiction where the 3rd doctor ends up in a weird parallel dimension where earth is called mobius
