Been trying to decide if painting over the knotty pine is the way to go and you've convinced me. I'll have a pro come in as those grooves are all over. Thanks!

Now that wood elements, rattan and tans are in style, I think you should have stained them with whitewash stain to tone down the yellows. They sell the stains in sandy colors too.

Hi Noah, I was always told NOT to paint wood in cabins because it doesn't let the wood breath - I'm not sure if this is based in anything. What are your thoughts?

I can't see paint vs polyurethane having too much difference in breathability and there's a ton of wood that is polyurethaned. I could see there being a problem if you didn't do both sides...especially with something not attached to a wall.

Excellent video series! I'm wondering how the paint has held up over the years? Any cracking, flaking or peeling? I keep hearing paint won't stick to this type of surface for long. Was your paneling varnished?

It’s all about the quality of primer used first. Stix primer is tried and true. Also a quality trim quality paint finish from a pro paint store would be best. Ben Moore Advance or something with similar quality. If using primer / paint from box store it will more than likely peel

  • @advicefromayoungtradesmant2482

Yes, the paneling was varnished, and I've been back to the house recently and it's all still perfect, no bleed through or failure. This substrate could absolutely fail with a bad coating system, but with Stix plus a quality enamel it's going to last indefinitely.

I have two small bedrooms with knotty pine paneling and would like to paint them. I'm gathering estimates and the range to do both rooms varies significantly ($2,500 to $5,600) What is a fair estimate to paint over knotty pine in a 12x14 room?

Impossible to say without knowing more details but I'd be suspicious of the low end price, do your due diligence with references with the higher end price and make sure you understand their process.

Do we not have to sand the sealed walls before pruning and painting?! Or is that only when using a sprayer (which I don’t own). Please tell me there’s a way to simply prime and not sand first 🤣

Sanding is best practices and always a good idea, but technically there are bonding primers that will adhere without sanding like Stix and Coverstain.

  • @michaelc2820

This is 5 years old, so I am sure you have learned by now that you always strain any Sherwin Williams product before use and to have the proper filters in your gun as well as your pump especially when using a 310 tip. The spraying technique you used was very novice as well, no horizontal passes should have been made here. Vertical strokes only, working from right to left with your fan angled slightly towards the right followed by a second pass from left to right with your fan angled slightly towards the left, this method will assure all gaps between boards are covered.
