Mauro Henrique helps a homeowner paint their home office. The office is covered in paneling and has recently been updated, but the paneling needs a coat of paint. They choose the right color blue before prepping the room and covering the walls in a gray primer. Once the primer dries, the two work together to roll and brush the navy paint on the wall for a beautiful finish.
A homeowner recently updated their home office by painting the ceilings and installing crown molding. However, the rest of the office is feeling quite outdated, with pine paneling covering more than halfway up all of the walls. When she decided it was time to cover that paneling, she called the Ask This Old House team for help, and paint expert Mauro Henrique answered the call.
Difficulty: 2/5

Where to find it?
To prep the office, Mauro uses painter’s tape [homedepot.sjv.io/MmdJqM] to tape off the built-in cabinet, windows, and decorative molding above the wood panels and lays out floor paper [homedepot.sjv.io/NkJD7b] to protect the floors.
To prime the wood panels, Mauro uses a grey tinted water-based primer [homedepot.sjv.io/Mm1kZJ] and sealer. For the paint, Mauro is using a water-based acrylic paint with a matte finish. The paint color name is “Gentleman’s Gray.” Mauro applies the primer and paint to the panels using rollers [homedepot.sjv.io/5gGQV9] with a 3/8 inch nap [homedepot.sjv.io/Gm5QPk]. Mauro cuts in around the edges of the panels using 1- 1/2 inch angled brush [homedepot.sjv.io/baeq4x] for the cutting lines.

If you must paint over the wood- use a high quality flexible caulk on the joints between the panels. Without it, when the panels expand and contract, the paint will crack at the joints.
Should have kept the baseboard as the natural wood too IMO...
30 years from now someone is going to say "ya, some idiot painted over all the nice woodwork".

I'm in Australia and in the City I live, there seems to be a trend to paint window and door trims to make them look modern. Newer homes also tend to have MDF, as opposed to real timber, so painting makes a lot of sense. When I repainted our house, I agonised over it, but I just couldn't paint over real timber.
If you don't use a shellac-based primer, the knots will show through in time. And putty/wood fill/bondo the knots. I know..I got lots of pine trimwork. Plus I would have had the radiator temporarily removed to get behind it. 80 percent prep, 10 percent painting and 10 percent cleanup!

They used Zinsser 123 / Bulls Eye. You don’t need a separate knot blocker with it.
Quick tip, hammer some holes with a small punch or nail in the paint can seal groove to let paint drip back in. That way you lid isnt sitting on built up paint making it hard to seal.

Guessing Zinnser 123 Bullseye Gray primer? Not sure you won’t have tannin bleed problems just letting it dry for only an hour, unless that Behr Dynasty is some miracle paint

I noticed the blue walls cast a slight hue to the white upper wall, something to think about if I do a wall a strong color with an adjacent white (especially depending on the undertones).
OMG - glad it's HER room and not mine.
No surface prep? And yeah the color is way too dark. The primer was a better color!

First cleaning, then a roughing up with sandpaper. Surface needs to have some tooth, and it needs to be clean and free of oils, grease, Scott's Liquid Gold!@@MKRM27

Cleaning (TSP) and sanding at a minimum. Spot sealing any knots. Those walls are many years old. Grease, oils, dirt, smoke, years of Scott's Liquid Gold all will inhibit paint adhesion, I don't care what king of magic primer you may use. Paint and primers need 'tooth' to hold on to the surface. An oily glossy surface provides very little tooth. @@MKRM27

Behr used to be OK, particularly the flat interior, but now it’s all garbage.
Why would anyone want to paint over wood panelling? It adds character and beauty to a house. They should have just taken down the panelling and paint the drywall underneath!
I like to strip and bleach the existing finish and stain them poly finish a matte or lowest gloss I've never seen any paneling paint jobs that didn't have some kind of failure of some kind wood will always swell and shrink good luck though
Looks like my HS gym walls 😂😂
Sorry, but the method used to select the color was silly. Drop one color, then drop another color, then " go with your gut". Boy, that's really getting a professional's opinion all right. Then, after all is said and done, you still end up with a job that someone else says " why in the hell did they paint over that paneling. I think it would be better to just remove the paneling and paint the walls.

The wood gave the room character. Would've been better to tear it out and put dry wall than paint over it.

I have been a fan of this old house as a first grader in 1987. With that said ai have passed this show onto my pre-K kiddo. This is the most horrifying episode of ATOH. This episode should come with a warning ⚠️ My wife was laughing as I was yelling at Mauro. How could you ?! I feel betrayed.
Great prep work and painting. Horrible choice of color to blend with the leftover wooden trims. This color will give you a headache. As a Pro, I always advise my clients what goes with what, as clients always have these pictures in their minds that are completely different from reality. Also do a test area first to give them an idea of what it will look like. Blue might be good in a very small elegant room but not in a large room with stained wooden trims

@@tonyr8443I didn’t know there was a need for a “pro” to determine what color paint a person desires. I get what you’re saying tho. But what you may think it’s great, they may hate it. I’ve been in the building/remodeling business for over 20 years also, and I always go with what the homeowner wants, and if they don’t like it they can pick and pay for a new color. On the other hand if I chose everything and they didn’t like it and wanted what they originally wanted I’d have to eat the cost. I e done some ugly colors that I would never consider for anything and they absolutely love it 🤷🏼♂️
He is the best. Love his episodes.
