Knitting Help - Slow Motion German Short Rows

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Part of my slow-motion series for very visual learners, slo-mo GSR.
German Short Rows are a way to add shaping to knitting, and are often used in sock heels and toes. Many of my sock patterns use this technique.

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate these slo-mo vids. Since I discovered knitting on KZread, I have learned so much, but oftentimes it has required starting and stopping vids every two seconds,🤪. With your slo-mo, I can actually watch straight thru, and practice knit at the same time. You have found a wonderful niche- thank you!

Thank you for your clear explanation using DPNs and the working yarn in your right hand, instead of continental knitting, which always seems backward to me. I knit very fine, fitted socks cuff-down using size 0 DPNs and sock-weight or even lace-weight yarn. I have always used a traditional form of heel turn that requires picking up stitches to form a gusset between the heel and the top of the foot. It looks good and fits very well, but I want to try the GSR technique because the heel turn would be even more invisible and neat. I have done magic-loop but prefer DPNS because I feel like I get a finer product and have more control than on circular needles, especially if there's a mistake. I only have to worry about the stitches on one needle at a time instead of frogging out a whole round back to the error, and I like the ease of counting stitches on each needle and knowing exactly where I am on a round without having to use markers.

Thank you for going over this slowly. I even slowed my playback speed so I could catch everything. I am also thinking about changing my knitting technique. Right now I knit by throwing the yarn with my whole hand, rather than just my fingers. It doesn't seem to be very efficient.

And I've only done a couple of pairs of socks and didn't quite get them right or understand the patterns properly. Thank you so much.

So, the slow motion German Short Rows are stitched on first two and last two stitches? If that’s the case, YES, it is way too easy! How does one know to stop the heel? Or maybe I should see one of your sock vids. In any event, thanks so much...this is way way cool! Thank you!

Not exactly...in this video I demonstrate the technique, but you really need to follow a pattern that tells you when the short row turns need to happen.

Whenever you're working short rows, you're essentially knitting flat, even if you're whole piece is knit in a tube. So the technique is the same (working the right side, then wrong side) regardless of whether you're knitting in a tube or not.

I still can't make it work..its fine on the purl side but when I get to the knit side, I bring the yarn forward, slip purlwise, and pull the yarn up, but it doesn't make a double stitch. I've been trying to knit a pair of socks for six months and I cannot find a heel that works for me. So i made one up myself. I can't find the technique anywhere else. It's not perfect but its decent looking. But i want to learn German short rows..they look so easy and when I watch videos on it I SEE why it works. I completely understand. But when I do it, it just doesnt work.

  • @verypinkknits

Short rows are "short"...so even if your knitting is In-the-round, short rows are always rows. Regarding different styles...traditional wraps and turns are sort of standard, but most people I hear from prefer GSRs to w&t, because they don't enjoy picking up the wraps.
