Knitting Help - Setting in Sleeves

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Setting or "easing" sleeves is probably the most challenging part of finishing a pieced sweater. Here are some tips to make that easier.

Thanks again Staci! You never fail to bring something new and helpful. This session made me feel more confident and taking the mystery out of knitting. I haven't tried knitting a sweater in pieces for this very reason.

@Linda Mihay - a well-written sleep cap pattern shouldn't have a super abrupt change from the flat to the angled part of the sleeve cap. Seaming that point in to the inside of the seam, plus a little blocking, should take care of that. It's good to check Ravelry and read other knitters review of patterns before you embark. Hope that helps!

I think seaming is a really underestimated skill. I’m a pretty good knitter, but I’ve some way to go to get my seaming perfect. Thanks again for your help. My go to knitting teacher. X

Yes, interesting to see parallels to sewing fabric! I question the very last part, though: I would NOT stitch from cuff to hem. Instead, I would stitch cuff to underarm, and then hem to underarm, again fixing any woogy-ness at the bottom of the armscye, so that the best matching happens where it is most visible...

Easing is something that is used in sewing a lot, so I'm glad I already know how to do that. Now I'm not so scared to do a pieced sweater! As someone who sews I do find it odd that you do the work on the right side though.

These videos are so helpful but I have come across three things now that you don't have videos on. How to sew on a pocket that was knit separately, how to attach a collar that was knit up separately and how to attach raglan sleeves on a sweater that was knit in pieces bottom up. I am finishing up a vintage pattern for a child's coat and there are no instructions at all for seaming anything. I've been watching videos to figure out what to do to make this look really good. Thanks again for all these great videos and a great podcast.

Hi Staci, thank you for your videos. I've been learning to knit from them over the last few weeks and recently finished a hat. I'd like to make a video request if possible. Although I am enjoying knitting, I do not find it very comfortable and would like to see the different ways of holding my needles and yarn so that I can find the way that suits me best. When you knit I notice you have the yarn over your right index finger which allows you to knit faster. I have also seen videos where people hold the yarn over a left finger or in their left hand. I would like to try these ways but I am unsure as to where to hold things. Any help or explanations would be much appreciated! Stacy

I have only one question...What do you do with that POINT where you go from the FLAT cap, to the shaped sides of the sleeve. That always makes a mess, for me. Thanks so much for all your video helps.

Thats the sign of a well written pattern...I'm working crochet squares and only have a vintage granny book with minimal instructions. I added a challenge for myself by using different sized squares...and I'm stuck on how to even shape the sleeve (no half squares in my stitch pattern)

Hope someone can help with this. I knit a sweater in the round - hoping to speed things up and make everything the same length (it takes a while for me to finish and the pieces ended up different lengths last time ) -sadly I didn't realize it would be such a challenge to attach flat knit sleeves! Can you help with this...please :) I didn't find any videos addresses this. thanks

Hi Staci -- what stitch did you use for the shoulder seam (front and back together). It looks neat and pretty trim. Not lumpy or bulky. That would be handy to know as it seems to be a big part of setting in the arm. You know, where the three bits all come together?

Julie Sheetz - I always say that a woman's sweater in worsted weight yarn takes a dedicated knitter about 40 hours to complete. More time if the sweater is in a finer yarn and/or a larger size, less time for thicker yarn and/or a smaller size. Of course, the speed of the knitter makes a difference, as well.
