There are many different types of hats that you can knit. in this video we will knit a simple hat using circular needles.
The hat using both a garter stitch and a stockinette pattern. The garter stitch is used on the ear flaps and the border. The video shows the knitting for a 0-3 month old. The numbers in the brackets below show for a 3-18 month and 18-24 month
*Steps*
EAR FLAPS
cast on 6 stitches
Row 1-2: knit all
Row 3: kfb, knit to last 2 sts, kfb, k1
Row 4-6: knit
Repeat Rows 3-6 four times. Have 16 sts (18, 20)
Cut yarn and set aside on spare dpn or stitch marker
BODY
cast on 5 sts, cut yarn (6, 7)
cast on 18 sts, cut yarn (22, 26)
cast on 5 sts, do not cut yarn (6, 7)
setup round by
k5 (6, 7), knit first earflap, k18 (22, 26), knit second earflap, k5 (6, 7). -60 sts
work in garter stitch until measures 1" (1, 1.25)
knit stockinette stitch till measures 4.5" (5, 5.5)
last row decrease 4 stitches (56 stitches) (72, 80)
CROWN
Row 1: k5 (7,8), k2tog, pm,repeat till end
Row 2: knit all
k2tog before marker
repeat decrease till 8 stitches remaining
last row: k2tog around till have 4 stitches remaining
I-CORD
Transfer stitches to a dpn and knit till it measures 3" or desired length
bind off and cut yarn
weave in all ends and clean up.
