In this podcast, J Stephen Roberts and Scott Amis are joined by historian Paul Copenhagen for a discussion of the Knights Hospitaller, one of the great orders of military monks of the Crusades! Later as the Knights of Saint John, the Hospitallers would defeat the Ottomans at the epic Siege of Malta in 1565.

Traits unique to the Knights Hospitaller Order: 1. First Military Order 2. Powerful Navy 3. Elite in defense 4. Owning lands (Islands) in the New World 5. Still around today, undivided.

Well... Depends on what you mean by undivided. There are several factions of the Hospitaller Knights around there. And they dont tend to work together.

My namesake Duckworth is connected to the Hospitallers and the area of England (Bury ,Manchester northwest England )and was a given name . I’m a lesser born to the not an inheritor. There’s 2 coats of arms one recognising the Hospitallers and the crusaders and the crown and family crest.

Not sure undivided is true- they were divided for centuries and still kind of are.. they need a strong leader and not to tiptoe around membership- could easily and shortly become the largest and most well funded sects in Christendom
As a modern day knight of the Hospitallers, the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes, and Malta. Thank you for this presentation J Stephen.
Great history lesson, thank you.Knight Templars are more mysterious but after listening to this, Hospitaller did great things in history.
The people of the middle ages in Christendom were people of God. They were all connected by the true Faith and true Church and they really cared for their souls. So for them to join a monastic community was very common. As modern man we probably don't understand that honorable mindset.
God bless the Knights of St. John!
I love how some of these knight orders are still around today. The Knights of Malta is just one of these Hospitaller-based orders.

I wish my sound were working, this is a podcast i have been waiting years for! There is so much information out there on the Templar, but much less on the Hospitaller. Seems ironic, given that a "hospital" is something that we hopefully benefit from in every city in the civilized world.
Thank you, gentlemen! To hear these events discussed is edifying, after reading about them.
Thank you for these Podcasts i am really interested in this subject and enjoy listening to the excellent presentations.
Very informative. So much about the Hospitallers is lost to the "average person." Hollywood really neglects these guys. Thanks for doing this, J. Stephen. Dr. Shradaer introduced your series to me and I'm very glad she did. This time in history has always been a favorite and now . . . so are your podcasts!

You should do book reviews, it would be a great way for you to recommend books to your viewers or warn them about potentially bad books.
Enjoyed the video.

+Petar Tepšić Thank you!
These are great but you're really limiting yourself by only uploading to youtube. If you put this stuff up on Itunes podcast i can guarantee you'll gain thousands of more fans. There is only one other podcast about the crusades up there so you'll have little competition. Please do it. It would be easier for me becuase i can listen to these in the car, in bed, in class, its just a smart investment.

Scott aka Longshanks add the commentary that needs to be asked, especially.
just wondering if the inability of the Templars to have a navy being the reason they gave up the GOLD MINE of Cyprus which was a GODsend to them buying from Richard I. or did they just not have a clue? or did Richard just decide he wanted a nephew in control instead of Guy and had the power to make the switch? by the way... love the podcast.!

@real crusades history .. just a thought, what if in the middle ages christian army joint forces with the imperial Chinese army would they be able to dominate the world ?
Wow, the Hospitallers were formed centuries before when I though.

Most of this presentation is "entry level stuff"...Any one who doesn't know the history of the order in the kingdom of NAVARRE from 1250 - 1512 doesn't know anything. All of the records of the Orders of northern Iberia have been wiped out but we do know they are OLDER than both Templars and Hospitallers and they fought together. The Order had HUNDREDS OF VICTORIES UNDER Sancho and other kings of Navarre during the Reconquista.Spain was not a country till AFTER 1512. America was 'discovered' in 1492. English is NOT the language of any of the Orders- it is Latin. Pseudo scholars abound on you tube
