Soak your whetstone in water for better results, start course and work to fine. Sharpen until a burr starts to form, then flip and do the other side. You don't really need a guide.

Only works if your blade is dead centre of the support.
@trueaussie9230
6 ай бұрын
@@Gungho1a I don't understand what you mean by 'dead centre of the support'. However, the blade forms the 3rd side of a triangle. If the 'legs' of the frame are uneven lengths, flipping the blade lengthways will change the orientation of the blade to the stone - ie if the tip of the blade is first clamped near the long 'leg', when the blade is flipped the tip will be clamped near the short 'leg'. Even with uneven 'legs', if the blade is fitted sufficiently to correctly sharpen 1 side, when the whole 'structure' is flipped the blade remains in exactly the same position relative to the rest of the structure, thereby ensuring the same orientation to the stone. The angle at which the blade meets the stone is the important factor and that is determined by the length of all-thread that forms the 'pivot'. Therefore, the 'holding frame' must be centred on the all-thread to ensure the same angle of bevel on both sides of the blade. However, not all blades take the same angle of bevel on both sides. All told, whilst it's an interesting concept it's really not worth the effort.

@@trueaussie9230 Flipping it over only gives the same blade to stone angle if the length of screw is the same distance from the end, to the attched angle bracket...in other words, the angle bracket (which translates to the knife blade) is equidistant from the ends. If you have two inches on one side, and flip it over as you suggest, but have two and a half inches on the side you are now rotating on, you change the sharpening angle. The sharpening angle is the important thing. If you lengthen the distance from the pivot point, to the axis of rotation of the bracket, the angle between the blade edge and sharpening stone changes.
