Side note about this Knife disarm detail*** I did not learn this detail from any PTK instructor. This was taught to me by an old local Kali instructor. Just a fun fact I thought, I'd share ;)

You only do that disarm on a single edge blade so that you won’t get cut that’s what I been taught by my master

@@VTSifuSteve I've done disarms against real knives many times in demos. I have achieved disarms in live sparring sessions with training blades, a handful of times. Against a real bad guy trying to stab me, I have defended myself successfully twice in that situation, but never did a disarm, as I had not learned Silat & Kali yet at that time. I knew Karate & Hapkido back then, which are not knife specialist arts. I hope I never have to.

You are right to call BS on this. 1. You won't catch the hand, and you will be left open if you try. 2. If you win the lottery and get his hand, you won't get the disarm, but you will get cut. Probably many times.

Imagine having shit tons of adrenaline pumped through you due to being in a life or death situation. The chance of remembering the method is slim, let alone the co-ordination needed to execute it. Might as well recite your nation's laws on knife carrying then poke their eyes out.

I got here through your link/comment on Trav "Fight Smart" page. Your channel looks very interesting and I've subscribed, specifically for the stick fighting vids. My question is though, have you ever taken up his 10000$ challenge? Or done any kind of a debunk/response video? You mentioned in the comment there that you have been in several knife fights, and imo experience out in the real world trumps any kind of tests someone might do in a controlled environment.

Hey Paul. Great video as always. Indulge me a question would you. I know you have been asked this a hundred times before, but what is your base system? And also the other style/discipline you incorporate into your personal system? As I understand you practice Pekiti Tirsia Kali, but by who? The way you move seems to suggest Tuhon Tim Waid. . .

Hi Eli, I used to train PTK under Tim however, I'm not associated with PTK in any way now of days. I've trained under other instructors such as Roy Harris, Vunak/PFS/Inosanto Blend, and other local FMA teachers. PTK is currently my largest influence however, that could change as my mind and training evolve.

Here in the Philippines, when we practice KALI ESKRIMA ARNIS, We use all parts of our body as defense. We Filipinos believe that the stick or knife is just an extension of your attacking weapon. When using empty hands for defense we also use headbutts, elbows, groin kicks and finger thust to the eyes, and also the birds eye fist to attack pressure points. Adding these techniques will help you disarm the attacker quickly. Thanks to paul ingram for this nice video.

  • @caydennguyen5250

The truth of the matter is most knife self defense isn't going to work if someone has a knife and just wants your wallet or car keys just give it to them it's not worth the risk. Saying that this video offers a good technique regardless as there may be a time where you do need to fight a knife attacker if you're sure they're intending to take your life for example. Yes you can argue this won't or will work but training in proper knife self defense is more than just techniques, it's understanding what you're dealing with when you're in such a situation like the idea that more than likely you will at least get cut or maybe even stabbed but it's being mentally ready for that and pushing on through it without freaking out/stiffening up. At the end of the day fighting a knife attacker is about survival.

@@kalicenter This isn't a drill. It's a technique. A drill is something that flows over and over. so you admit it's not really practical. I practice as if it were real life. Good use of the forearm though. But you will almost ALWAYS get cut in a knife fight.

I disagree Coogan, I think with an ankle stomp or knee stomp in combination... the physics will work. Something must be done to the opponents footing and balance.

Why do you all have such an emphasis on overly complicated disarming techniques which we practically NEVER see done sucessfully in any real fight situation? What we DO see is either is almost entirely people either getten killed and severely wounded OR people who launch some kind of devastating counterattack already in the beginning phase of the attack.
