The truth is knife attacks are unpredictable. And no matter how much you practice the timing of the blocks the truth is you cannot block them because the persons speed can change suddenly. And also the person with the knife will rip the knife back if you try to control the persons arm that way. They won’t just stand there. Please don’t ever try this technique if you get into a bad situation.

Nice disarms! Personally I'll do my best to reach for a weapon my self , and if not use the surroundings as a weapon. The only time i'd go for the knife is to gain a pocket of time so i can disengage and get a weapon. I find too much focus on disarming by grabbing, can lead to a disaster if it is prioritized before disarming by pain or getting hold of a force multiplier yourself... However I think this is good to have up the sleeve if you are lucky enough to get a hold on the blade for some reason.

Thank you for this awesome video! It really makes me feel safer, to know I have some defense in a worst case scenario. When you need to defend yourself in a knife fight you could get cut, especially if you're a novice. I say when a guy draws a knife to attack you he's fighting dirty. So kicks are fair game at that point, and if you can kick him in the groin well that's just bonus points.

my former pekiti tirsia /sayoc instructor used his art in prison... since most shanks are pokers rather than slashers he had to modify what he knew to deal with the zipper attacks.. he said the only disarm was when he was able to hack or knuckle the wrist or forearms but it wasnt often that scenario presented itself... he has scars on his outer forearms but none to center mass and although he teaches disarms he expressed that you will have 10% disarm success against an amateur knifer and almost no chance against an experienced knifer especially another kali practitioner who is versed in weapon retention. ... personally i will always practice disarms and tapping drills to keep my reflexes sharp in my older age but i will always remember a quote from mark denny of the dog brothers who said as concerning disarms they are incidental if not accidental...

+Stuart Tomlinson Before I speak I just want to say I have nothing against you personally alright. This technique WILL NOT WORK in a real knife attack. Because first of all he will not attack you slowly and let you do your move, he will come at you full speed stabbing. This is what will happen in a real attack, he will be hiding his knife, he walks/runs towards you, when he gets close he takes it out and does not do any fancy cuts and movements, and starts stabbing you to death with speed. Also he wont really slash a lot he will just keep stabbing until your are dead. I suggest you visit Nick drossos for self defense against a real attack. Also I am not telling you to remove the video, I am telling you to inform your viewers this wont work in a real knife attack.

I've had some old crazy guy run after me with a knife before, the best thing to do is to to run and hide preferably in the shadows. If it's day time just run, if he followed you though and you're sure you can go for a chokehold. It will be much easier to disarm your opponent then. Separate him from the knife and have them under control until the cops arrive. Or even at a scenario at night some people might panic and not have the guts to interact. That's okay just run to safety. These videos aren't all that much realistic because as others said as well a knife attacker will never come at you slow like this and allow you to disarm him, especially with all the adrenaline you get in a situation like that.

I think teaching "knife defense" without explaining that it is pretty much impossible to fight someone who has a knife hand to hand without getting cut is irresponsible. The best knife defense is your sprint.

Hawkifyed I definitely agree that your best defence is always to escape or avoid anything approximating this kind of an encounter. Sometimes we film quite back to back and instructors don't mention something they normally would in a class environment. I am sure Stephen would more than agree with your points, he is just demonstrating aspects of the Kali system here. Thanks for watching and making some great points!!

Not if you're cornered or.. You have your pregnant wife with you, small child with you, elderly parent with you or you've got a knee problem and some sort of injury that stops you from running. Knife men rarely pull a blade out on someone and give them a chance to run. Most times you don't know a knife is involved until it's already coming at you. I found that out the hard way.. And yes knife defences work.

+halfhausaman From the knife attack survival videos I've seen... front kicks (and upckicks if you're downed) are the best chance. The problem is, just like a boxer needs to box to become good, one has to defend himself from knives to be able to do it for real. Plastic toys and compliant partners won't do much help. Of course I'm not saying you should go out and ask someone to stab you with a $150 tactical knife that is razor sharp and serrated, but if one does it against the rubber knife that's like shooting paper targets at the range and then expecting to have the confidence to take a shot in a hostage situation.

Stupid comment and statement in general. Why do you need to see a "real situation" to believe that these techniques will work. Kali or Arnis has worked for the ages that it has been around. It's not like someone just threw together a few techniques and said "There we go. Seems like it would work." No, these techniques were built up through experience and constant pressure testing--as well as "real situations" of combat. Try it out or at least research it before you dismiss it.

The guy in the video did way to many moves to get one goal accomplished which is to disarm the attacker. But in situations like that or in all violent situations you want to do a minimum amount of moves to obtain objective. Like one or two moves, or three at the most. For you don't have time to waste, and you don't want a mind under stress to have to follow so many steps.

Just use Kung Fu if you're going to bother with that omg. Also, I prefer something that uses momentum some so there's a level of control otherwise they are going to retract that arm. Self defense has gotten so dumb. Anyway, I generally use Kung Fu to start the deflection and to grab then aikido and hope it stops and I use momentum and control if it goes bad I'm in good positioning. If it is not controlled at the aikido range I close to bjj or wresting range with bjj intent. I don't do that first off though because the knife sure would tickle my belly if I had a good grip or would possibly slip and I'm not in a good range against a knife for the slippage in bij. I've disarmed several knives while being attacked with bladed in the real world, one with ikkyo, two with bent arm throw one surprisingly with wrist return a terrible disarm that no one should use but hey it was open I did it and lastly one with a rear arm drag to grounded rear crucifix. The rear crucifix sounds the most engaged but that was actually to stop a suicide the rest were against my life. Mostly the same person but I've been around. I did get stuck once when it was thrown but the cut was superficial when I got to hospital.

It's best with knives to respect DANGER AND RISK more than SKILL. So I manage range and tactics first line of reasoning not skill in grappling, if things progress I more aggressively grapple. If you are ever closer than furthest reach you need to have two arms in weapon or you might have died. Close range isn't preferred because slippage or just the knife being in your face or belly in general like a Russian tie is a good idea to follow a longer range attempt that you feel start to fail but it's just not preferable ... Respect the danger OF THE KNIFE AND SITUATION more than the skill level at first, always control knife before closing in. I like Kali but I'm tired of the hype. I'm glad I saw what you were doing nothing wrong with that at all. But the best aspect of your disarm is you can do it while holding your own knife ... The worst aspect is low control. I use range or flanking personally whenever possible against knives to respect the seriousness of the RISK and SITUATION more than SKILL. In my humble opinion that is paramount

the content on this channel is.usually excellenti think you should research actual knife attacks - real attacks where people really get stabbed and cut. also i think you need to experience someone really coming at you with even a felt tipped marker.tell them youll give them a dollar for every mark that is solid enough to represent a deep cut or puncturewound on your body and arms. try taking things away from an athlete who wants to keep them. no disrespect is meant here,i just dont think this is safe to trust, especially the way im seeing it trained. best wishes

Knife attacks/defence is a really hot subject and I agree with you that it is a difficult one to train and get right. Stephen here is demonstrating a Kali application based on his own studies, I am sure there are many others. No disrespect is taken, the tutorials on here are meant to be viewed, trained and evaluated. If an individual does not like them or think that it will not work, they just simply need to disregard it. +Stuart Tomlinson And here we have another legit Martial artist wasting their time and gracing the ignorant with an explanation- if these people are so ignorant of the art of Kali that they believe that practitioners haven't even done some type of realistic sparring people should just ignore them. These wankers need to understand that this is not the be all and end all of knife techniques- this is an isolation of something that someone deemed worthy of sharing from a complex and holistic system.
