KME sharpening quick and easy mirror polished edge

Demo of just how easy the KME is to set up and use. This is a high polish from dull and won't cut paper to laser sharp and phone book paper sharp. Keep watching after I say "see ya later" to see the paper cutting.

Dear KME: I bought the delux $299 kit and I got the kangaroo strop. You say we don't need the mirror finish for knife.... but what about for broadheads? I am trying to build an implement that is strong, sharp, human, bleeder. Do you feel that a mirror finish for arrow broadhead for taking game is the right thing to do? Do you think it is a necessity if one's goal is a respect for the life one is about to take? In other words: should I put my time into the mirror or is it not as necessary and I should be spending more time practice my REcurve skills? Pls give me your thoughts. My feeling is that if I am going to take a game, I must do it with the most respect possible. Pls let me know, but I literally did just order the $299 kit, thx.

Don't have a KME yet but spoke to Brian on the phone today after he gave his phone number to me when I asked a somewhat silly/durr moment in a email without even asking. Took up far too much of his time with babble but at no point was he in a big rush to sell me something or hang up. He genuinely was interested in helping me find what would work and even shoot the breeze. 10/10 class act Without a doubt KME is the way to go when they got guys like Brian on the other end of the line helping you with any issue. Not trying to sell it but I know how it looks just honestly sincere on how impressed I am with it in today's world of terrible customer service.

Thank you for the video! How should I incorporate the ceramic/Arkansas stones into this process, the ones that come with the deluxe kit? Can I use the ceramic stones in between diamond stones to clean up the grind marks? I don’t understand the grit difference between diamond and ceramic/Arkansas stones. For example I have the 60, 120, 320 ceramic and the medium fine hard Arkansas stone, are those comparable to say 140, 300, 600, 1500 diamond stones?

KME is a minimalist system in some ways. 1x4 rather than 1x6 or 1x8. The grip has finger groves for two fingers. Thin guide rod. Dinky knob to hold on to. I own a complete kit like yours and I chose not to use it because I feel there are too many minimal things about the system. It’s like someone looked at a Lansky and worked at just barely being a little better. Imho. This gentleman is a good spokesman for the product, does a nice job. I completely agree about the mineral oil or lapping fluid.

It always amazes me that you are able to put a sharpie next to the sharp edge of your knife. lll tell ya, that sharpie tip must be made of the strongest material this face of the earth has ever seen. How else can you explain how the tip isn't just sliced off clean at the diagonal base like a Japanese Haystack bundle that is sliced by a katana, when your knife butter slices through all things else, other than this pen tip. Amazing. just amazing. In awe just contemplating this thought. Thx.

Hi, KnifeGuy! Can you explain what your cleaning process is for the lapping films once you’re done? Do you do anything else beyond what you did in this video, just quickly wiping them off with a drop of oil and a rag? I just used my lapping films for the first time, and the lower grits especially have some darkening left behind, like a staining on the films. I added oil and wiped away as much as I could, but some staining/dark areas are always left behind. I couldn’t tell if yours looked the same way in the video, so I wasn’t sure if this is completely fine. I didn’t want to scrub too aggressively to try and completely get rid of the darkening as I imagine this would ruin the film. Thanks!

My method of using the KME is, unscrew the handle from the jig and hold the knife by its handle, use the jig just to keep that angle. That eliminates pressure on the jaws. Instead of flipping the knife in the jig, flip the jig around the knife when you need to switch side. I scrub only when resetting a bevel, otherwise single strokes over the whole blade length (unless it's too long), always against the edge. You can either hold the knife steady and stroke with the hone, or hold the hone steady and stroke with the knife, or combine movements of both hands for much more efficient work. The KME stones and diamond hones especially are quite expensive and there are problems with availability here in Europe, so I have just the basic set of four ceramic + Arkansas and the xc,c,f,xf set of gold series diamond. For higher grit, I use a strips of very fine sandpaper (2000 grit and higher) that I pull around one of the hones and tighten it on the stone carrier. To do heavy reprofiling, I attach the KME jig without a handle to a plywood or fibre board, and secure the knife on a riser to the same board, making sure nothing gives way no matter how much pressure is applied.

The slight wobble in the base bothered me a bit at first so I started clamping the base to my table. However, it really isn't necessary, and the risk is that it encourages you to "lean" into it too hard. Keep your strokes light and you'll find that holding the knife steady in the clamp isn't such a problem either, though you do need to check frequently that you haven't inadvertently moved it and changed your angle.

I haven't heard anyone refer to using a jeweler's loupe to see EXACTLY what's happening at the edge. Maybe it's just my old eyes, but I find it helpful to use a 30X loupe to spot any minor issues at the bevel. They cost just a few dollars, so it's a cheap way of watching what's really going on at the edge. Does anyone else do this?

Yup the base and post fit in the box no problem. There’s plenty of foam to cutout later if you end up adding more accessories. Thanks and welcome aboard !

The deluxe kit comes with a set of ordinary stones (not the gold ones) are they of any use? They are relatively cheap

zom zom Hey there. Both kits come with the Gold series stones. The basic kit has the 140,300,600, and 1500. The deluxe kit adds the 50 and 100 grit gs stones, along with three ceramics, one Arkansas, and a strop with 4 micron cbn emulsions. My personal Gold series stones are over 6 years old and still kicking ass, and I sharpen a lot.
