The rust issues with the bike don't have so much to do with its build quality, as with the fact that you're keeping it out of doors, and will be much worse if you don't regularly cleaning it, esp. the drivetrain. Steel parts (unless they're stainless steel, and even then they can rust in the winter when roads are salted) rust when they get wet. It doesn't matter what brand you got, you have to minimize exposure. That's what's up with the bolts, brakes... Best thing you can do is try to clean or carefully sand off the rust, then apply a protective layer. That should help you with preventing more rust buildup, and makes cleaning easier too. Also, defo get some fenders/mudguards, keeps you dry and helps keeping your bike clean for longer. Gearing is too high? You can either change the chainring, or get a bigger cassette. I'd recommend the cassette. Yours looks like a typical 14-28T freewheel (7speed?). You can get a wider range 14-34 without changing anything else, maybe that's the easiest and cheapest way to get a gear range closer to what you need. If you want to spend a little more, then a rear derailleur with more capacity, and you can go to much bigger cogs: 36,40,42,46. With a single chainring at the front, you have plenty of options for the back! Oh, and the toe overlap you show at the beginning is a common problem with smaller frames. Can't do much about it unfortunately, it's important to try different sizes to see what fits best. Hope that helps you.

I have just bought this bike and it's now more expensive. I think they might of improved it because there is much more room between the front wheel and pedal. I can stick my foot all the way forward and it still doesn't touch. I will be putting silicone spray on all the rust points you showed before I put it together as well. Hopefully they have ironed out the issues with the front disc brake will have to wait and see.

Learnt my lesson a long time a go. Buying good quality second hand is a much better idea. I bought two avanti bikes last year. Both like new and only 80 dollars each. Bloody bargain. When the cranks go I just look for another second hand bike rather than spend the 60 dollars for a new one

Yikes! This is currently on clearance at Kmart for $119. I was about to pull the trigger then saw your video. Was going to bike this bike and throw a $450 ebike conversion kit so I have a cheap $670 ebike, but maybe spending a few more hundred for a decent bike is the way to go.

I’d definitely spend more for decent brakes alone for an electric conversion

Sorry if this sounds ignorant but did you grease the parts before you rode it did you bed in the brakes (if not that could be why it squeeks) did you go to a nuts and bolt shop and spend $5 max on 316 stainless steel to switch for the zinc plated shitty socket head cap screws (i agree there) anyway its a great review and i applaud you for that thank you very much. also $135 which it is now is f**k all if its lasted 5 months

I have the same problem with the front brakes; it seems the brake alignment with the disc is slightly off/tilted, causing a scrapping sound. The solution is just to adjust the brake alignement with the disc so it becomes parallel and cancels the scrapping sound, but I don't know how. ;/

I also get this weird “looseness” sound after breaking that goes away but it’s like the spokes are clinging or something

Bruh I had the same bike for 1 year and I haven’t got any damages cuz I always keep my bike in the garage when I finished using it, maybe you should put it indoors or put shelter instead of putting outdoors

unfortunately buying a kmart bike is equivalent to burning money. You're better off paying double and getting a decent bike from a good place that's known to not sell crap. Sorry to say, but great video!

I bought a kmart bike used. It was like $15 but was probably $100 new.. anyways yeah that front wheel hitting the shoe is the same thing, big nono. But good thing I bought a decathalon bike this year so now the shit one is just for emergencies and parts if needed, but kmart bike as a commuter? NAH it's like the electric scooter of bikes.. it'd probably cause you an accident more than anything lmao

it doesn't sound like you really prepared the bike properly, it needs lubricant , cleaning and a rust treatment

I honestly don't know why Kmart thinks it can make it's own bikes and be good at it. They're better off buying parts from actual brands and just putting it together, they'll make a killing off the volume of simply putting together parts that are known to work. Those disc brakes are shockingly bad for disc brakes lol
