Klipsch Heresy 1 Speaker Rebuild and Update Project - pt 1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I was having problems setting up an A/V system in our home. The room was a horror story and my original choice of speakers proved inadequate. I had wanted to avoid floor standing speakers but in the end it was the way I had to go.
Here's the link to the sound check - part 2
• Klipsch Heresy 1 Speak...
I've always loved Klipsch and decided a pair of Klipsch Heresys would fit the space. I thought I'd have fun with it and look into rehab project. I had previously update a pair of Forte IIs with parts from Bob Crites at Critesspeakers.com.
I found a nice pair of cabinets and grills on E-Bay, and Bob supplied the X-overs and drivers. The odds and ends were found on Amazon.
Parts: Type E X-Over
Woofer Crites CW-1228
Tweeter CT-120
Mid-range driver - A-55G
Mid-Range Horn - K-700 original

    Funny, I'm doing the same project! I picked some nice cabinets on eBay. Picked up some K700 cast horns, I have vintage alnico EV T 35( K 77) tweets, EV 1823, and 1824 compression drivers,choice of vintage EV SP 12B, original Chrome Frame Alnico SP 12's, JBL MI 12's. Cool Stuff.

    The only change I'd suggest is switching the tweeter lenses to Dave Alts MAHL lenses (with the L-pad). I did this when My Forte II lens fell apart and liked the difference enough to do it in the Heresy. Both sets of speakers sound fantastic! kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4urysOYnNWWqLg.html

    I upgraded my Forte 1's a couple years ago with Bob Crites crossovers. The bass which was already huge got a lot more punch to it. Also added the Crites tweeters and midranges. Very happy with the mod. Thank goodness for Bob Crites. I would like to find some older Heresy's for my bedroom. nice video.

    Thanks for the compliments. I have a pair of Forte IIs on which I did the Crites updates, my plan is to keep them forever. They still sound fantastic. The Heresys also turned out well. Now that I've had some time to live with them I can only say I love them. They have a nice soundfield and sound very accurate.

    Nice, I got a pair of Forte 1 a few months ago, replaced the "foams" on the passives, one was split, the other had dry rot cracks started, sealed the cabinets then called Bob for capacitors and Ti tweeters. Mine have the round binding post cup with the XOs mounted directly to the back, I swear they must have been prototypes they were awful to work on. I got a single ended tube amp and even with only 4 watts they sound so good. I'm thinking of building Al Ks network for them since I'd like to move them to a board and they are better with tubes as the impedance doesn't fluctuate as much as the original, maybe add a second set of binding posts to drive the woofers with solid state. As you can tell, I love them. Oh yeah, I just put them on 10" risers(after removing the 3.5" original) what a difference being at ear level and no I'll effects from the big box underneath, other than looking a little funny. I'm going to add a little trim detail so they look like they are sitting on a stand rather than super tall rectangles.

    I am so glad you metioned the SEAL as this is critical to BASS production, Often i hear people saying the heresy has no BASS,,,,ok here we go, if your heresy speakers have no bass ,,, its only only 1 of 2 things ,,, a 12inch woffer in sealed box will make excellent BASS (remember ADVENT everyone loved that bass production ,,with a little old 10)make sure the box completly sealed,,if you didnt know push on woffer 3/4 inch inward ,,it should return to your fingers very slowly ,,if not ,you have a leaking cabinit(aka no bass) .its a wonder how so many Have not heard this.second a cheap AMPLIFIER will not make strong bass ,,with 12inch woffers in a sealed box.thank you.

    There is nothing wrong with the Bass from these speakers with normal music. For A/V, there are 2 SWs in the system. This was a fun project and gave me a great set of speakers. The sound is quite good and the instrument detail is accurate. Absolutely no regrets. I wish I had gone this route before spending for the M-L Edges.

    I dig the table! I'm doing a heresy 1 upgrade this week, I've done other models for 20 years now. I can say this: the Crites parts are FAR superior to the stock drivers and crossovers klipsch used, especially the tweeter. The Crites mods put the modded H1 on part with the $$$$ HIII. I mate mine with 2 15" subs and it's killer.

    Scott, I would like to get some more info on your Heresy upgrades. I'm about ready to use Bob Crites crossovers and caps, but your comments have me wondering if I should do more. This is not a practical place to exchange info; would you kindly email me at logrady@cfl.rr.com so I could get a couple questions answered. Would greatly appreciate it!

    Those are top of the line components that you used. Especially those midrange drivers. Where did you get the back cabinet seal?

  • @ejcheck

    @ejcheck

    4 жыл бұрын

    The odd components such as the seal were sourced on Amazon. Other possibilities are Parts Express and Monoprice. My goal here was to build a speaker that would be the equivelent to the new Heritage Heresy. I think i did that for about half the price. I've always loved the sound of the old Klipsch speakers

  • @ejcheck

    You might have missed it. But this was a complete rebuild I had no drivers I bought cabinets and then the parts to start from scratch. I just wanted a fun project. However there's another video I did where I have updated the tweeters and put in mahl tweeters which really brighten the sound up nicely and prove the high end.

    I just got some Klipsch Hersey my 1 from 1984 for only $280! They sound wayy to harsh and dry for me and I’m going to do some Crites upgrades

  • @ejcheck

    @ejcheck

    6 жыл бұрын

    nick parkin when you're done with the upgrades if they still sound harsh (shrill?too bright?) Not sure what you mean by harsh. If the sound is to shrill, You might want to try some dynamat type material insides the cabinet. It should not be needed but you're the one listening to them and it should soften the highs. I did this with a guitar speaker cabinet and it solved the problem. These speakers were not designed for very deep bass. If the harshness is due to a lack of bass a Sub Woofer may be needed. I didn't have a problem with the bass, but there is a SW in the system. Some have filled the cabinets with damping material. Crites will tell you not too, it's not the way the speakers were designed to be used. Finally, check out the Klipsch Forum there is a wealth of information to be had there

  • @nickparkin8527

    @nickparkin8527

    no they just have a very dry sound and dynamat material won't help because the midrange and tweeter are horn loaded and sealed so it will not affect the sound.

    Ferro magnetic parts in the signal chain is a big no-no. Tube connectors will increase sound stage and clarity. Add No-rez and 15 radiator on back panel. All modern corrections for audiophile grade results.

    The original x- over was a basic unit. The Crites replacement was a more solid replacement. I used the Crites x- over, i also replaced the tweeter diaphragms, in my Forte IIs several years ago. The Fortes are good for another 30yrs and are stool a joy r to listen to.

  • @ejcheck

    @ejcheck

    5 жыл бұрын

    30yr old speakers can certainly benefit from a x- over capacitor swap. I would just replace the x- over with the Crites unit. A new seal strip and if they seem harsh perhaps the Dynamat one the speaker frames. The Klipsh forum may give you some ideas. Some have filed the cabinet with polyfil, but this would change the original design parameters of the speaker

    Heresy 1's metal horns and phenolic tweeter combined with electrolytic caps are too harsh for me. The Heresey II (tractrix phenolic) a titanium tweeter diaphragm (clean to over 20khz, unlike Klipsch which rolls off at 17 and gets spikey) and quality metal film caps really clean them up. Crites mods are the only way to go.

  • @ejcheck

    You missed the description the only thing original about these are the cabinets, which were in great shape. Crites supplied NEW UPDATED drivers and x-overs. These are on par with the new Heresys. This was a complete update and rebuild. Actually, there is one part that is vintage, the Mid-range horn, but the driver for it is new.
