Kitchen Remodel Part 12 - Quartz Backsplash Installed

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this Part 12 video, our quartz kitchen countertops are measured for the backsplashes by a templating specialist from FloForm Countertops, who inputs multiple points using a corded pen-like sensor at random distances, which are instantly digitally recorded. One week later, a two-man crew from FloForm Countertops install all the backsplash pieces, the same quartz material as the countertops, but machined down to a thinner 2 centimeters in thickness. The quartz countertop, which is manufactured in Spain, is Silestone, and the color is Lusso: floform.com/products/lusso.
During the installation process, it was discovered that the small cabinet on the right side of the range was significantly lower than the right site of the countertops. So, I called Tony, the owner of Tim’s Custom Cabinets and insisted that he send someone out to adjust the height of this small cabinet. Minutes later, Chris appeared. Chris put an impressive amount of time and energy to adjust this small cabinet to match the height of the countertops during the chaos, both contractors working together to get this done properly. After three times of removing and adjusting the height of the cabinet using shims, Chris got it leveled. How cool is that! As I watched my final edits to this video, I found the craftsmanship, enthusiasm, and commitment to do a professional job to be both educational and entertaining. The bottom line: Diane and I are very pleased with the results!
Background: Having spent four years of our retirement in a small ranch style house built in 1978, we were ready to remodel the worn-out farm style kitchen. But the timing was bad. We were in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and most contractors in the area were overbooked and unavailable, even for an estimate. Then one day as we again passed by Tim’s Custom Cabinets, located at a new round-about in a residential area, we stopped in to inquire if they could give us an estimate. A month later, we sat down with Tony, the owner of Tim's Custom Cabinets and signed a contract for a major kitchen remodel. As it turned out, this remodel project took excruciatingly long to complete and was extremely disruptive to our daily life.
The total cost: A lot of clams!

You’re a great guy making quality content!! Thanks for the years of hard work !! I’ve been around since the little bass pond days. Don’t feel discouraged by your age. The only issue may be two years down the road is you’ll run out of things to fix on the house !

Can you tell what the adhesive to attach the backsplash to the wall was? Also the caulking.

How much of an overhang does your countertop have on the island (where chairs go)? I've seen 6" for 3cm quartz and 8" for 2cm quartz.

Fun watch. Did the same lately. To each his/her own, but I was left wondering why you didn’t just bring the backsplash all the way up to the cabinets. I get it that it cost more, but you already brought it up to the hood and window sill, so you’re 1/2 way there and the empty patches with 6 (?) inch backsplash (to my eye) really jump out as ‘incomplete’. Obviously, I have nothing better to do than critique, so don’t mind me! :-)

Seems to me that the boys scratched the countertop when sliding and wedging the splash under the window sill. Why on earth did they not set the bottom in place first and tilt the splash into place exactly like they did the splash under the hood? I heard you say that the sill is angled down but for what reason? It should be level. A small gap between the sill and the top of that piece of splash would be caulked and out of sight unless you are laying on the kitchen floor. Just curious, thanks. 🤔

I asked these questions too, off camera. Installing the backsplash behind the faucet was a challenge because of the tight clearance and the slight inward slope of the window sill, which pinched the backsplash, They did custom-cut the backsplashes onsite, so they made slight adjustments to get it to fit. Ideally, the sink and faucet should be installed last. If there are any scratches, they are unnoticed. The window sill above the sink was sloped slightly so that any water splashed up from the sink would not pool up against the wall. And as it turns out, water does splash up onto the backsplash and sometimes the window sill (even on the windows) all of the time just from routine use of the sink. When it comes to laying down on the kitchen floor and looking up, I recommend that you do not do this because you will see lots of covered-up mistakes and adjustments! Thank you for watching and for your comments!

So new flooring should go UNDER your base cabinets? I was told cabinets go in first and the flooring people will cut around the cabinets

I thought the same. Could be the scheduling of contractors and convenience of time and materials is the deciding factor. At least, the flooring underneath the cabinets is waterproof. Should a water spill go under the cabinet, no pooling, no problem. 😉 Thank you for your comment!

Never put flooring under cabinets. Cabinets should sit on the sub floor.

The material you got is 3cm not 2cm and now you have another installer installing the backsplash and last countertop pieces that is crazy seems like the company would have sent the same crew who started the install because now if something is wrong now they will have two crews telling different excuses why something is wrong I don’t like that

Very nice but I have to say as a fellow trader we absolutely hate being watched like this its extremely annoying being asked questions while you're concentrating and we are actually far more likely to make mistakes. The guy from part 1 was definitely more comfortable with you but these guys definitely didn't want you filming them

I would be uncomfortable too! But, I don’t just start recording unannounced. I’m a professional photographer/videographer, and I respect an individual’s feelings and personal space. I would never take pictures or video of them without their permission, even in my home. For all our home improvement projects, I ask permission in advance, before signing the contract, to record video of the work being done with the intention of posting it on my KZread channel. And when the workers arrive, I ask each individual if I have their permission to record them. I often record them giving their approval. I don’t want to be sued. I also tell them that at any point if I am in their way to let me know and I will back off and stop recording. I’ve been recording contractors at work at our homes in Virginia and here in Washington, and in our neighborhoods for many years, and I have never been told not to record video of them doing their job. In fact, most welcome the idea that someone is interested in what they do and willing to take the time to document their workmanship and share share it on social media. And when you think about it, I am capturing and preserving a process, craftsmanship, products of our time for which I hope that Google will store in their human history archives.

Cringe as anything, permission or not. Let them guys work without all the questions, at least. No offense. Just a different perspective from a tradesman. Recording without interrupting is ok, but leave them boys alone to do the work.
