Kitchen mixer tap repair

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Kitchen mixer taps can be difficult to fix, but luckily in this video it was one of the easiest taps I have ever had to fix. I believe the tap was purchased along with a Howden’s kitchen. The difficult part was locating a replacement cartridge as two plumbers merchants did not stock them and said that there are so many different ones that I really should find out the make and model of the tap and then get a replacement cartridge from the retailers.

Thanks so much for this... I'd NEVER have thought of looking for that wee grub screw under the temperature marker, and it's such a straightforward job once you're in there.

Thanks so much for this video! Tap was leaking for a couple of weeks and now it's fixed for less than a fiver from Screwfix for a compatible cartridge 😊. Also, thanks for replying to a previous comment by someone else. I had the same trouble getting the top lever off - it was stuck fast - but I followed your advice by putting hot water over it, then I whacked it upwards with a wooden rolling pin and that loosened it enough to come off. All sorted within a short part of the afternoon! By the way, I rarely ever comment on KZread but you deserve praise for your excellent advice. 🙌

Thanks. Very satisfying to fix it myself... I found that the washer at the base of the cartridge had come loose and attached to the brass internals of the tap so I peeled it off carefully, cleaned it, put it back in place and reassembled the tap... works perfectly now. Cheers!

I have the exact same problem & 1st thought you have to remove the entire tap from the sink which would've been very complex & uncomfortable to remove. The guy at the hardware did tell me it was that blue thingy that was faulty but never knew the temperature markers had only to be removed which makes it much more easier. Thx for the video. This is the reply I was hoping to see. I have a brand new faucet used for about 20 days which leaks when flexed at the tap. I hope that the large brass screw just needs tightening down plus perhaps a dab of silicone grease on the o rings. I had a plumber fit it about a year ago in an apartment not often used.

+shortyian Absolutely. I have to say that I was quite shocked when I went in the first plumbers merchants and he said I'd need the make and model and have to get it from the manufacturers. This was at my sisters house near Preston, normally I walk into Sheths plumbers merchants in Blackburn and they guy behind the counter goes out back and then appears with the correct cartridge. I'm glad the third plumbers merchants had one LOL Thanks for the comment

+Rich Zapp I'm not sure about that, although my local plumbing shop in Darwen is a PLUMBASE. I refuse to go in there as they charge different prices for Joe Public and plumbers with an account. I'd rather prefer to spend an extra hour driving to the next town where they don't inflate the prices when I walk in and always have everything I need. Thanks for the comment ;-)

They are not ripping you off as the plumber gets trade prices, and you not being in the trade don't. Nor are you entitled to trade if you are not a plumber etc.

Thanks, Mate. Brilliant video 'how to do'. Twice I have followed it to take out and clean the cartridge of my kitchen tap, when it started to leak. When I replaced it, both times, the leak stopped, problem fixed. I guess the cartridge had shifted a little out of place (even with the lugs), causing the leak, so when replaced it was fixed. 😀✔️😀

The hex lug was a little difficult to remove and the big retaining bolt was stuck; this needed a locking wrench as the adjustable spanner wouldn't hold the small bolt lip. Other than that - great! Fixed the mixer tap with a $15 component.

Thanks for sharing this. I had this issue with a tap that looks almost exactly the same, a Carron Phoenix. Their website referred to a spares outlet whose website had no information. I got a cartridge from E bay. I ended up making an educated guess as to which model tap I had and which cartridge was needed. Fortunately I guessed right! Curiously, I am now wondering if the right catridge was fiitted in the first place as the hot and cold water holes in the original cartridge are not circular, unlike the holes in the replacement and in the tap base.

Perhaps try this first before replacing cartridge. Remove the three-hole valve on the cartridge and replace it using the other side, that is, turn it upside down and replace it. Put cartridge back and tighten the nut. Leak stopped. I wonder if this 'three o-ring' valve can be bought by itself.

Great video, I'm stuck at the initial step taking the grub screw out. Looking in to the tap just looks like a hole, tried a number of different size allen keys and one felt like it was catching to undo but no luck the handle is still on tight. Frustrating as the rest looks easy to do

They can be a pain to get out. Have you tried shining a torch through the hole, sometimes that helps as you can see the grub screw head 👍

@@ultimatehandyman having the exact same issue as this. It looks as if the grub hasn't been in, so in theory the lever should pop off, but it's not moving for love nor money. Either that or the grub screw isn't catching the hex at all. Any suggestions for either problem?

  • @flat-earther

    @flat-earther

@@stephenreilly8743 If the screw has been removed or is missing, then the lever is probably just stuck and you need to pull it of by force, also try to soak the whole lever area with vinegar to dissolve the lime, maybe even try heating the handle with a hairdrier, just a thought, whatever will work.

I wish I'd seen this video before we paid a plumber. They insisted it was cheaper to replace the whole tap rather than to change the cartridge. $360 later, the new tap leaks and they say it's normal for water to remain in the spout and continue to leak out. Still having ongoing problems getting satisfaction with plumber. Next time I'm going to try to do it myself.
