Kissimmee Bass Fishing Tournament (FLIPPIN BITE!)

Ойын-сауық

It is time for day two of the kayak bass fishing tournament on Lake Kissimmee, down in sunny florida. Conditions are post frontal on this Jan day, and the flippin bite was unreal... however... I would soon learn that this would turn out to be one of those "tough" days, that was almost comical!

I feel for you! What I've learned is that when you get a bite from heavy cover, don't get pull toward it but stand your ground. If the water is shallow, you can use a power pole. If the water is deep, you need to paddle in the reverse direction, away from the heavy cover. You need to trust your equipment (65-lbs line) and reel-in as hard and as fast as you can. Do not slow down or pause, because you need the momentum to rip through the heavy cover. Keep the line TNT (tie-and-tense), my friend!

That was tough to watch, but it was also honest. Yanking bass out of heavy cover has never been my strong suit. Appreciate you showing that sometimes boating them is not as easy as the pros make it seem. Best of luck in the coming tournament season.

Hi Kristine, what I do and you should do is through some granola bars into the bottom hatch of your kayak. Keep them on the bottom and the water will keep them cool for you. This way if you need some more energy you have a simple snack with you. I never leave without them! Stops that light headed and headaches. Got to keep your energy out there. Good luck and have fun out there…just remember we are still in snow and your in the sunshine, where do you think we would like to be?

We all have days just like that. I was fishing with a guy one time and we were both throwing the same size line, weight, hook and the exact same worm. All day long the fish would hit mine and not his. The 2 baits could be within 6 inches of each other and they would hit mine and not his. I had a great day of fishing, him, not so much. There isn't always a way to explain it, it just is what it is. But I love the way you keep on keeping on even through a tough day like today. Thanks for all the entertainment though.

I'm by far no expert, but I've watched Hilary and Scott Martin flip a ton and their hooksets are usually patient and methodical. Reel down slow and tighten the line when they feel the bite and then hard Hookset. Again, I don't have much experience with that thick of grass, but I think you were pulling more than setting the hook. Sorry it was a rough day, but great video!

I felt awful for you. That hay grass is so tough to pull them through from a bass boat let alone a kayak. Being lower to the water makes you have a worse angle to get them through the cover. You are going to have to stand up to be more successful in the kayak. No doubt the hook makes a difference but I suggest you stand up.

I didn't realize those baitcaster reels and things bass anglers use are the smaller brother of the heavy duty reels of same type. That striper anglers use. Bob has real problems with GoPro batteries too, and he's a trained pro camera guy. Matt Robertson and Bob, I think share a common liking for ugly stick rods. That's what he uses for the striped bass.

You are way more experienced than I am, but I only saw one catch in this video that you actual set the hook. The rest seemed like you just leaned back into them. I believe that was they biggest issue. Also if you watch one of the big ones you hooked right after hooking it you turned and pedaled right at it. You gave your leverage away and it came off. You are undoubtly a better fisherman than me and I'm not throwing shade. Those were my observations from the video.

You said it in one, hook is too large (aggressive fish in tight circumstances where they've structure around them such as hay or grass, can use that to bounce in twelve different directions in a matter of seconds, and flex their way out of anything). Just think of it like watching the top mixed martial artists in cage matches, who can use the structure of the cage around them. In order to flip the advantage of their opponent in a flash. That's where that method of combat comes from, and it's most effective around objects like that. My guess is the actual human being combatives learned it from observations of nature. Just like Joe Rogan explains about grip technique and ground technique. It's the same with fishing, details matter. If the hook connection is too loose and sloopy, it will slip. Again, and again. Until like one of those cage match guys, who're worn out from trying.

Where a co-polymer short leader on to braid using a leader ring component might work. Where you straightened out a regular light-wire hook and used that as your needle. And then thread the co-polymer length down through the plastic worm, coming out sideways through the plastic bait half ways. Remove the straightened out ligh-wire hook. Replace with something like a super sharp size 10 to 8 round, short shank hook (the highest quality Neko or dropshot hooks). Even smaller if you can, use a size 12 hook if the design has a nice wide, round bend to it. I'd use a barbless Czech nymph hook. Those guys are experts at fishing around hard and soft structure where they bump the bottom. Simply insert the eye of that hook back into the soft plastic and gently insert the hook point into your plastic. Essentially half of the soft plastic bait has the co-polymer leader material contained inside of it. The reason is, a stout diameter co-polymer leader is pretty roboust and inflexible. That item terminates just to a leader ring a couple of inches above the soft plastic. And the braided line is tied to the leader ring. That's how I'd do it. You're making the 'leader' component then completely and totally part of the bait system (the leader is part of the bait system, not part of the line system).

How you would actually do it in real life. Is you would pre-rig multiple soft plastic baits using the 'needle' technique as explained. And just re-tie the braid each time you had to change the plastic. That would probably be the fastest system. Now that I think it through. Something bass anglers may be adverse to doing (the advantage of the large EWG hook and soft plastic bait is that you don't have to re-tie a new hook). All you need is a new soft plastic bait. However, in this demonstration it becomes obvious where the limitations of that system is. Don't be reluctant just to re-think any of these systems is my overall argument. The 'X' factor you're trying to optimize for is time, not the amount of knots you have to re-do between line and hook. Or other terminal tackle item, on the water.

What you might want to do in the hay grass too, is to keep the co-polymer leader length quite short. Just enough to tie on the small hook and pin that to your plastic. If you have a leader ring tied on the end of the co-polymer piece, you can insert some tying thread into that or thin whispy braid. And pull the leader ring through the soft plastic to give you room to operate, when tying on that small hook. Then simply using the whispy piece of braid in that leader ring as a pull chord effectively. To draw the co-polymer piece back through the soft plastic. To where the leader ring is the only item exposed with an inch or two of co-polymer material. That gives you a finished soft plastic ready to tie directly to braid (on the water). My advice is not to invest time in things that may not matter (everyone in bass fishing now is making FG knots, becasue that's what you do if you're a real angler). Without trying to figure out when that obsession came from (it's because guys 'use up' their leader over a day's fishing and have to start with a long fluorocarbon piece, to end up with a short one). With leader rings you can short-circuit lots of that. And one has some control over certain things in fishing, like things that can save time and offer degrees of comfort 'on the water'. Clearly using large EWG hooks and replacing plastics on them, did not deliver that time saving or comfort in Florida.

In another circumstance, an EWG hook and replaceable plastic might be the ideal solution, and most time efficient. One doesn't have to discard any proven system of rigging, but be aware of certain weaknesses or limitations. Such as EWG hooks when fishing in hay matts. It's hard, or impossible to find a 'one size fits all' solution. We shouldn't demand that of any rigging system or bait. Every one of them compromises some aspect, to deliver advantage somewhere else. Fishing is about noticing the situation and taking measures to change when it makes sense. I'd recommend wearing gloves to avoid line burn and cuts also when making pre-tied leaders (you'll have to deal with grazes, cuts to fingers etc). So it makes sense to pre-make leaders ahead of time. When using foot to tension knots on rigging components, I use a couple of loops of braid into leader rings. And hold braided loop using one's foot to tighten knots. There again, some cardboard etc needed so one doesn't slice into soles of shoes that cost a lot of money. One of better seminars on lines for fishing I thought, the Arizona Hook Up shop did an hour. I thought it raised good observations and some good questions on lines.

A quick way to pre-rig the soft plastics, would be to have five to ten needles with a double stand of braid in each needle. Thread each soft plastic carefully using each needle. Simply pull one strand of the braid completely through (and remove the needle from the braid). Have the co-polymer or fluorocarbon, or monofilament pre-made short leaders and smaller hooks pre-rigged too. Tie the braid simply to the leader ring, and then use the braid to pull the leader ring back through the plastic baits, through five to ten baits. One can get a sort of production line going, for different colors etc. Or types of plastic bait. And exercise good quality control on one's rigging of baits off the water. Rather than on the water. The advantage of EWG hooks, was that on-the-water rigging capability. Which in many cases is fantastic. But not all cases. One has to be smart to know when it's limited.
