    I always struggle when the sun comes out after its been cloudy. I think I’ve discovered a thing recently though. I keep doing what im doing but i switch to natural and translucent colors when the sun comes out and my bites come back. Last Saturday the sun came out for 3 hours. No bites. I was throwing a white and chartreuse spinner bait with gold blades. I swapped to a white with bluegill color with double silver blades and got two in 15 minutes.

    @@kristinefischer2289 If you look at Todd Castledine in episode seven of his latest series, I notice the same thing. That top water Choppo lure he is throwing is missing his camera (mounted in front of the boat console), usually by a few inches distance. As long as you don't make the mistake they make in drift boat angling for trout (boat is set up perpendicular to wind direction, with guide in middle with oars to keep boat perpendicular, and a fly fishing angler at either end). There's guys who have lost eyes here, in that situation. Not fun. My professor in college her Dad and brother it happened to on a competition. The Dad's eye was lost. You can replace gear, I wouldn't worry. Other stuff, not so much. It's the reason I think why Bass brought in that rule of no rods over eight feet. Sage do make a 'Bass' fly rod I recently learned that meets the BASS regulation and it comes in at seven foot eleven inches. Myself and my own Dad, it worked okay because he was left-handed, I was right. And we'd fly cast at opposite ends to maintain the most distance (if anglers can learn to cast with the wrong hand, it can work too). Not easy. Kayaks definitely leave the angler though with as little space to cast as possible. I don't know if it could be done, but a kayak that drifts perpendicular to the wind direction (if one found a shoreline that lined up). Would enable the kayak angler to cast in front of the kayak like normal (towards the shoreline), but drift sideways. I don't know if it makes sense, but one might be able to use wind to advantage. A modern breeze at least.

  • @academicmailbox7798

    @academicmailbox7798

    Жыл бұрын

    What I'd do then, is if I could set up my kayak to drift perpendicular to the wind direction. Where one is drifting from one's left hand side, towards the right hand side. I'd cast the lure ahead of the drift from the right hand side (to suit the right-handed angler). But I'd switch my fishing rod to the left handed side, and retrieve back to the kayak from that side (as the kayak is drifting perpendicular to the wind direction, you kayak is going to move towards the right hand side). That's key, because you're giving the lure long enough to move slowly back towards the kayak, while the kayak itself is being moved sideways by the wind. It's a very stealthy way to fish. You can't even do that with two anglers and a large boat (with oars man in the middle). If you think about it. He can turn the boat length-ways with the wind direction, and give the anglers the opportunity to cast 'towards' the shoreline. However, it's like that 'trapezoid' problem. It start's all square and nice to the shoreline, and by the time the boat has drifted with wind, the retrieve that started as a square has now become a slanted, or collapsed square geometry. And the two anglers are just struggling to take up the line (the front angler is having to retrieve their line from underneath the rear anglers fishing rod).

  • @academicmailbox7798

    @academicmailbox7798

    Жыл бұрын

    Turn the large drift boat the other way (perpendicular to the wind direction). Okay, so now the anglers can't cast towards the shoreline at all. They have to cast directly in front of the drift boat. Which means the cast is now 'parallel', not towards the shoreline. What happens then, is one angler is fishing in shallow water only, and the other angler is fishing in deeper water only. The anglers can't retrieve their flies across different depths (as the cast perpendicular to the shoreline would enable them to do). However, this method does have the one advantage that the lines of the two anglers don't cross.

  • @academicmailbox7798

    @academicmailbox7798

    Жыл бұрын

    That is a roundabout way of saying, that anglers in kayak boats who learn how to position their kayak perpendicular to wind. Can do something which anglers in larger boats can't do. Which is to cast towards shorelines, while drifting sideways with the wind occasionally. And retrieve their lures over different depths of water from the shoreline back out. A kayak is the only boat that can really do that. I don't know if it's even possible to maneuver a kayak though in wind swells like that, to go sideways in a drift type of way. The key thing though (because you're kayak is moving sideways all the time). Is to cast to the right hand side of the kayak, and retrieve to the left hand side. That way the bait retrieve won't suffer from that collapsed 'square' geometrical problem. Where it gets dragged along with the vessel during the retrieve. That breaks the kind of artifice that one is trying to create of an independent moving bait fish.

    This Stray Casts 'Pedal Pirates' conversation (episode number one, January 2023).

  • @academicmailbox7798

    @academicmailbox7798

    Жыл бұрын

    The thing to remember about braided line and fluorocarbon leaders. Is that one is transitioning there between a line material that is stiff (I think in an episode of Scott Martin, he mentioned a fluorocarbon line that he worked with up to 25 pounds breaking strain that was more flexible than others). A criticism he had about fluorocarbons is their stiffness compared with monofilament. That transition or that contrast is even made more exaggerated when you place fluorocarbon alongside braided line, on the same line attached to the same fishing pole. There must be a reason why one would want that. I see all of the different bass anglers doing it. Putting fluorocarbon leaders on to braided lines. And Kristine was asked about it in that episode of 'Pedal Pirates' in January 2023.

  • @academicmailbox7798

    @academicmailbox7798

    Жыл бұрын

    People get a little bit distracted by it (the knot that is made between the two that is designed in order to go through the rod rings). Kristine mentioned putting on a short leader on to braid for punching in clear water conditions. To focus less on the actual braid to fluorocarbon knot system. Maybe one needs to just stand back from that. And look at what is actually going on. The example I can think of is a swimbait lure (Cody in his conversation on Pedal Pirates mentioned using straight braid with crankbaits in river current situations, to maintain contact with the small crankbait lure as it worked in the river currents). I can think of an example of a simple paddle tail swimbait or something. And one could go straight braided line to the swimbait perhaps, in order to get more 'kick' out of the soft plastic, lightly weighted lure. I don't know, it's just an example. The point, or the reason why folks might want a leader on a braided rod and line set up. Goes back to the thing I mentioned. One material is extremely limp and it folds, twists and snags a lot. Clearly there is something about having fluorocarbon for that last bit of distance. Between the braided line and the bait. That makes sense to a lot of anglers. Even though it is more work and introducing more potential 'points of failure'. It could be simply that anglers want the stiffer fluorocarbon material next to the lure, so that the straight braid stays away from the lure (where the line might tangle or wrap itself around the bait).

  • @academicmailbox7798

    @academicmailbox7798

    Жыл бұрын

    And at that point, the best way to look at that. Is the fluorocarbon is not actually a part of the 'line' at that point. The fluorocarbon leader, is actually an extension or addition to the bait. It's an important distinction. Lots of folks get fixated with that 'knot' system between braid and fluorocarbon, and how to design it, execute it, re-do it etc. Their whole preparation around fishing the evening before, can become focused on making braid to fluorocarbon knots. Instead of doing something else. The reality is, that if one thinks of the fluorocarbon leader of whatever length (and yes, people over-size the length of their fluorocarbon leaders, because they know they will change lures and that eventually uses up all the fluorocarbon part). So assuming that an ideal length of this component. This flourocarbon leader is not a part of the line system, it has become part of the bait system in some way (to keep the braid away from the lure). That is the only good reason I can imagine why one would bother. The fluorocarbon piece is not at all as flexible as the braid line. And that 'knot' connection between straight braid and a line-tie on a lure. Is something that is the very definition of loose, flexible and un-controllable by definition. It may not be what anglers prefer. That is maybe why they use leaders at all.

  • @academicmailbox7798

    @academicmailbox7798

    Жыл бұрын

    Because if that is the case, there should be no real fear of the kayak bass angler putting on 'a leader'. Simply make a simple 'loop' knot at the end of a length of fluorocarbon, and a loop at the end of your braid. And join both together loop-to-loop. It's ugly and it's quick. And it areas of vegetation it will gather up crap. So will the best braid to fluorocarbon knot to some extent as well. Then tie on the lure to the fluorocarbon leader. This ought to work and function as required. If it is the case that bass anglers do want their fluorocarbon leaders only to hold the braided line 'away' from the lure itself. If that is the real function of the fluorocarbon leader and no other. And I really suspect that it is. That is, the 'leader' that bass anglers think of as being part of their line system is not. It's part of the lure system, not the line. The fluorocarbon 'leader' is an extention or appendage to the lure, not the line (bass anglers are thinking about this 'back to front'). Where the idea of 'leaders' came from was fly fishing. And in fly fishing we have a stiff coated plastic line, which is also heavy. And we're trying to create a transition between the awkward non-presentable part, the fly line. And the lure, using what is called a 'leader'. That is what a leader is. What bass anglers are doing I suspect is not that at all. It is a lure appendage or extension for the reasons explained. And if that is actually the case, any kayak angler shouldn't worry they are doing something wrong. By making a really basic braid to fluorocarbon connection, instead of an elaborate one. They'll both 'work' the same.

  • @academicmailbox7798

    @academicmailbox7798

    Жыл бұрын

    The only thing that not having that complicated 'knot' does, is it deprives one of the hours that one could have spent making them. The evening before a tournament event. And there might be a meditation or relaxation aspect to that for anglers too. I don't know. If the bass anglers are convinced though, this 'fluorocarbon leader', which is not really a leader. It's a part of the bait or lure system, and not the 'line' system. If that is the case, then maybe a simple Riverger 'Leader Ring'. A high quality product such as that used by fly anglers. Is enough to make that transition easier. On the one hand it terminates the braided line nicely. And it provides a nice transition. Looking at it from the flurocarbon leader end too. And you also can quickly replace these connections and re-do them on the water. Even as a kayak angler. There's nothing to prevent one from having a number of fluorocarbon leaders of one's desired length already made with 'Leader Rings' at the end. Ready to tie to the fresh end of your braided line, and to the lure at the other side. What it also means, and the part I would like. Is before you 'attach' the braid to the leader ring. You tie the fluorocarbon short leader piece to the bait end first. And then tie the braid finally to the leader ring. That is how I would work. Just a suggestion.
