I'm thrilled to finally announce our newest project, Kirby's Super Dream Piano, a 60-track piano cover album celebrating Kirby's 30th anniversary! The full album won't be coming for a few months yet, but to kick off the celebration enjoy the first single, Return to Dreamland's legendary final boss theme "CROWNED"! As one of Kirby's most famous (and tricky to perform) boss themes, it seemed the perfect place to demonstrate what this album's all about.
The Kirby series has always had boss themes that are genuinely groovy, epic and inspirational, or sorrowfully sinister, but when Return to Dreamland brought Kirby platformers into the modern era the game also proved that a good boss theme can be all 3, which has since become a series staple. As the song is originally composed for practically an orchestra's worth of instruments, it was tricky to boil it down to the bare essentials for a piano cover. Yet ultimately the song's core power comes from its fast-paced F minor melody and building dynamics, so I focused around that on the right hand while having the left settle for strong chords and occasional trills.
As was the case with "Two Planets Approach the Roche Limit" a few months ago, my arranging was also aided by a lovely score by HAMNOKUNSEI: musescore.com/user/10620761/s...
