Kings and & Queens of England: Episode 5: Georgians

Ойын-сауық

Lust, tempestuous relationships and madness feature in the colourful reigns of the Georgians. George I brought two mistresses over from Germany, George II quarrelled openly with his son Frederick, and George III became ruler of the British Empire - but madness eventually disabled him. His son reigned as Prince Regent for eight years, and later as King George IV.

I'm American, but it'd be a wee bit of an insult to say that Richard III was merely mad. The "Princes in the Tower" were either murdered at his command, or in sympathy to his cause. That intramural betrayal was so great it contributed to Henry Tudor's successful capture of the throne via an almost comically tenuous Lancaster claim.

Alan Ereira cracks me up. My favorite moment in this episode is at the end, when he says that Victoria would make a demure and pretty little queen who could leave running the country to the professionals. Then his expression falls and he says, "Couldn't she?" He clearly likes the subject matter but he doesn't feel the need to be super-reverent about it like some historians do.

Since this series aired they have done a test on the bones allegedly belonging to Phillip who's corpse was supposedly hidden under Leineschloss castle. They turned out to be a mixture of animal bones and human remains from 5 different people. Also, according to Wiki Sophia didn't die of shock from Anne's letter. She died a few days later in her garden when she was trying to run for cover in a downpour and simply dropped dead from old age.

I like the series. A thousand years of people trying to figure out how to organize and govern themselves. The compact presentation makes comprehendible the constant ebb and flow of the shifting balance between the power of masses against the power of concentrated wealth. It is really a study of how nation states came into existence. I may watch it again.

I think it's natural that the masses never hold power in government. Anyone who would tell you otherwise is selling you a bridge. In America for example there are over 300 million people. Imagine direct democracy on that scale!? It would be complete chaos and nothing would ever get done. That's ignoring the fact that many people have no desire or ability to be involved in decision making. I think the term oligarchy gets overused and has a (sometimes) undue negative connotation. I would say it is the most natural form of government. Even under an "absolute" monarch it always emerges in the form of nobles and ministers. It is even more obvious in a republic, when business interests and representational privileges collide. I think in the end we have to do the best with what we have. The 250 year rule seems to be the most accurate representation of an enlightened government, completely independent of structure whether "democratic" or absolutist.

Finally! The missing link between Mr. Eriera's previous episodes and the last one in the series. For some reason all the others were fed in chronological order save this one. I had been searching for the then missing 18th and pre-Victorian 19th century monarchs with no success. It was as if the Hanovers were being ignored within the series. Finally the gap in an excellent and most entertaining series has been filled. For whoever posted it, many thanks! I suppose of the dynasties of the English throne, the Tudors are the most well known. But for myself, I find the Plantagenets the most interesting. Despite Henry II's mismanagement of his family's internal affairs and the conflicts resulting from them, he seems to be one of the most lasting influential monarchs ever to sit on the English throne. Although he jealously guarded and failed to share his power within the royal family, he seems to have treated his common subjects fairly and evenly in laying down a basic common law system that survives to this day. I suppose Henry II's legacy is widely overlooked because he was of Norman origin, spoke little English, and kept his family in constant turmoil. But what a cast of characters! His mother Matilda, Henry II himself, Eleanor of Acquitaine, Henry the Boy King, Richard Lionheart, and evil Prince John. All from a single immediate family. Lest we forget Thomas Becket as well. More than enough to rival Henry VIII's better known matrimonial exploits. What a soap opera that actually played out in English history! It was well dramatized in John Goldman's 1966 play and his subsequent film adaptation of 1968, The Lion In Winter. Plenty of facts sprinkled among much reasonable speculation in a most entertaining manner. Years later the film was remade, but I personally recommend the 1968 film version with Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn. O'Toole's Henry II portrayal was excellent, especially in the light of his previous portrayal of Henry II in 1964's Becket with Richard Burton in the title role. Both Oscar worthy portrayals that sadly went unrewarded.

Somebody told me that King George the first wasn't well liked when he came over here from Germany... maybe the fact that he had no choice in being uprooted from he's native land and having to live in a country where he could not speak the language may have caused him to be grumpy and difficult to get on with ?

youarecrazy7777 To be fair, that would be largely because most Europeans who learn English nowadays do so as schoolchildren. Because of the way the brain rewires itself at puberty, it becomes exponentially more difficult for most people to learn a new language as adults. George I therefore probably spoke heavily accented English, which he only would have begun to learn after coming to the British throne in his 50s. However, George II learned English as a young child and was probably fluent, and any suggestion that George III spoke English with anything but an upper-class London accent is just silly. I can't speak to the quality of the German language they use here, mind you...

4:28 - 4:33 the melody sounds like a patriotic song of America "My Country Tis of Thee" the melody written by the French, given to the English, and the English who settled in America had taken the melody and used it a patriotic song for the new colonies of America. The Georgians were never Kings of England. England had ceased to exist as a sovereign nation when George I ascended to the throne. They were sovereign of the Kingdom of Great Britain until 1801 and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland thereafter. The title King (or Queen as it was at the time) of England was abolished with the enactment of the Acts of Union on May 1st 1707.

The title King or Queen of Engalnd was abolished in 1707 during the reign of Queen Anne. In 1707 the Parliaments of both Scotland and England passed their respective Acts of Union. The result was that on the 1st of May 1707 Scotland and England yielded their sovereignty to the newly created nation of the Kingdom of Great Britain and the UK parliament was formed. So the Georgians (King George I-IV) never held the title King of England they were the respective Kings of Great Britain (until 1801 when Ireland was incorporated into the union and the nation became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland)
