Exactly. His occasional irreverent attitude well compliments his historical accuracy within a most entertaining presentation. I fail to understand the gap created by skipping ahead to Victoria. The 18th century monarchs were totally ignored as well as the colonization of the Americas and subsequent rebellions within the British Empire. Also the pre-Victorian monarchs of the 19th century were ignored. I dearly would have loved to hear Mr. Ereira's commentary regarding that period of the monarchy and am disappointed that that period of history was omitted. Even later, only a passing reference was accorded the loss of Hindu India and Muslim Pakistan under the reign of George VI during post WWII Britain's near bankruptcy.

But it is very shallow, because it hurtles along far too fast. Many controversial things are not properly discussed. It would in no way suffice as a school course. As an example, Thomas More appears to be a nice guy who was a victim of a violent king, but in fact, More was a murderer of hundreds of believers in the Lord. This shows the real bias of this series. It would be a good idea to erase the series. Buy some books.

It remains to be seen how the public handle the death of QE II. She is the only ruler most of the people know and change will be hard, Prince Charles will be an excellent King because he is connected and cares about the public. I don’t have the same faith in William and Kate. I suspect William will try to revive all of granny’s habits and by then the public will be over much of the overt display of wealth that now exists.

Although I despise the idea of the Monarchy, I quite like the form it has taken in the modern Britain, they are demoted more now to a piece of living history and a tourist attraction, which we can still see as something that is patriotic and quintessentially British. The new generation, William, Harry and Kate reflect more the levelling out of society and represent more the 21st century Brit. Good ambassadors for the future.

After reading your diatribe on Queens & Kings ... You seem to have. overlooked both the History & Evolution of the function of (British) Monarchy. Those who have survived Listen to their Subjects, those who failed to listen now are dotted around the Historical landscape. As difficult as it is don't we all have to cultivate & maintain levels of flexibility. If you dress yourself in an outdated suit you are treated as the opposite. It must at times be a royal PIA. to project a sense of "modernity" & at the same time attempt to hide the wisdom History has taught every Monarch. It is a well known secret the Monarchy has far more Power than ANY elected Government ... who needs the Monarch's Assent to pick up those reins of Govt. & continue to function within the Laws - or The Monarchy will remove your Party from office. EG. See to whom Oaths of Office are directed. .... Military owes allegiance to The Monarchy NOT the Govt of the day, in turn the subjects to that which maintains the Status Quo, et Cetera. Whilst nothing is perfect, sharing Power séems to work quite, quite well. I wonder if the almighty & powerful USA (New Rome) shall fare under the pressure of History. Let's 'ope Trump will become a god after his tenure has expired .... C

I have loved this Queen since I was a child, even before her coronation. I think the most desirable thing about the monarchy is the connection to ancient history - look at the costumes etc - the love of the British for their history and ancient buildings etc, and the incredible amount of colour and pageantry in a dull and rather horrible world. It also provides continuity.

Watching this series in May 2018 it is very educational to see how few heads of state were actually trained or capable of the responsibility. Now Prince Charles is a figure in the background and my age, (70s) and his sons will continue the monarchy I'm sure in some form or other. Even in the US our news is full of Prince William and his family so they will be ready when Elizabeth is gone. I remember watching her coronation and marriage on a tiny tv screen and in news reels so long ago. It will be an end of an era when the time comes.

The Queen's wealth comes from a variety of sources. Parliament does give her an allowance, although Parliament gets to keep the revenue from lands she owns (currently the revenue is about 5 times the amount of the Royal Family's allowance). She also has a substantial investment portfolio and the Royal Family own a lot of rare objects (that they can't sell). The British haven't revolted against it because it gives the country an institution to be patriotic toward that isn't the government.

I think it's important to realize that he had the mentality that he was king first before a cousin. During ww1 the Russian monarchy was viewed negatively by people and they were plagued with many assassination attempts (even a successful one on the czars granddad) because many Russian people felt like they were straving and dying and nothing was being done. At this time Britains monarchy was shaky as well and the British people had a lot of anti German sentiments at the time , so much so that the royal family changed their German last name to more English sounding Windsor .Czarina Alix was German. Would communism and anti monarchist ideals enter Britain had the excommunicated czar arrived? An awful decision to make as head of a monarchy.

Everything evolves over time. What royalty does for Great Britain today is maintain it's national identity midst a sea of uncertainty and in doing so, provides a calming haven for it's many multicultural people wherever they are. And this common bond finds it's center in a readily identifiable symbol : It's monarch. Today, when the Queen speaks, it is an authority granted by tradition and endorsed by the free will of her subjects. She speaks to the mind and most importantly to the heart of her people with a voice free of the constraints of politics, policy or contemporary events. She is there to offer a steadfast sense of what is right and what is proper. To raise the standard of what is best about her nation and it's people, whiter at home or abroad through out the commonwealth. To provide a symbol of excellence in a world where it is hard to find. I have no doubt it is one of the hardest jobs in the world. For while other leaders come and go the burden of her station in life can only end with her final breath. You have to admire a person who is willing to do something like that.

February 2024. I watched all of the episodes. As someone born in the U.S., the history is what keeps many of us intrigued by the UK and emotionally tied to it. I know a good bit (2/3) of my heritage is from the UK. I have followed it from a distance my entire life. The only part that bothered me was the end. Parts of it sounded a bit catty/petty. I would imagine an institution that long standing and impressive would be well worth $1/yr from the citizens. I can assure you our government steals much more from us to give to people all over the world while our own countrymen suffer….although I do believe the Queen Mother should have been reigned in by someone. And if there were one person living that I could meet and have dinner with, it would probably be Princess Anne. What a badass she is!

I really enjoyed watching such outstanding series especially the last two ones and so I appreciate the efforts of the working crew and the broadcaster. However, I argue that there is a serious necessity of a bit more episodes because of the recent huge events like the death of the longest -rulling period queen ever, and follows that the coronation of King Charles who has almost gave up the concept of being king😂😅. With the regards of a viewer from the future.

She doesn't want Charles to become King. That's her incentive for staying alive. 4.03 Melbourne looks like Rowan Atkinson. They should have done a Victorian series of Blackadder. Jim Broadbent was funny as Prince Albert in the Christmas Carol spoof

You need to make a part 7 with recent events including Prince William and Kate Middleton rise and role in royal family and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle split from royal family. Right now, Kate Middleton just celebrated her 40th birthday and she is celebrated as one of the best future Queen consort of England.

Also the British Royal Family are heavily involved with charities around the Commonwealth and while they don't have much opportunity to link the UK with other royal houses anymore, the Royal Family functions as a symbol of Britain, aiding in tourism and rubbing elbows with business and political leaders as well as high society. And as the program points out, it is hard to say that the Royals do nothing for the people. They can and do advise Parliament and can take control in emergencies.

It's not so much Elizabeth Windsor or her family themselves that are special, but the position of the monarch and his/her family that is considered special. The monarch has been made to be the living personification of being "British", a rallying point for patriotism as not everyone will agree with the government. Look at what happened to those who disagreed with George Bush right after 9/11. It was hard to criticize him and not be construed as unpatriotic.

Quite partial last few minutes. If people complain about giving money to sustain the monarchy - which is not that much -, imagine to end it. An unprecedented constitutional crisis.

While Denmark was occupied by Germany during WWII, I do not think it stopped having a king, hence the Danish monarchy did not have to be restored. The information on this point is presented incorrectly in the documentary

The narrator is wrong on one point. In the Netherlands wel accually had a king from 1815... even before Victoria became queen. One of the princes was at one point a marriage candidate for her. Same goes for Belgium, their king was Victoria's uncle Leopold. These monarchies were not restored after 1901

The video seems to eqnore the millions that the monarchy brings to the British economy from tourist. especially from yanks like me who choose to visit Britain over the rest of Europe because you have an actual reigning monarch. Overall the British Royal family is a net gain to the British economy.

No they are not. Other countries without living monarchs get just as much tourism as we do, if not more. Class is still a big issue here. You can't have true democracy with a royal family. I want to be a citizen not a subject.
