Yeah, Viserys wasn’t exactly a weak king - he was just a king who prioritized peace so he avoided upsetting people unless necessary. But he had no problem with actually bringing for the hammer then necessary

I honestly love his conviction to keeping her as his heir. He doesn't care for gender simply his own words and convictions along with choosing the best ruler

Paddy was utterly perfect in this role! Vastly under-rated actor!

Have y'all ever imagine if Viserys tested his children one by one with the same question he asked to Rhaenyra and Daemon? "what do you see when you look at the dragon?" Bcs Daemon definitely failed the test (it supposed to be on EP1). I personally think Aegon wouldn't give him a good answer bcs he never wanted the throne. Aemond would get the answer better than Aegon but near to Daemon. Helaena would probably have the answer better (near to Rhaenyra) but Viserys knows better, Helaena wasn't made to rule. So I think Viserys was right, Rhaenyra is the best fit here

I know money would be her downfall, it's foreshadowed on EP4 & 6 bcs Viserys never teach her abt the value of gold.

@@levia9349 I believe she's a better ruler if the Greens let her sit quietly. She's a better person before the Greens drama and I do think she'd make a fine Queen. Not the best, but fine. I won't try to revisit debate abt her in the book bcs I am a writer and it's pretty clear where the book wants you to cheer on. There's literally SO MUCH to be questioned in the book. I think people (who read the book) and chose to be neutral, like Shireen Baratheon, (at least) is a wise person than people who roots for each sides. Personally after I watched the show, I'm drawn to the Blacks bcs the show answered the question I had. When I read the book, I keep thinking "Viserys steadfastly upheld Rhaenyra's claim doesn't seems like him AT ALL. He ALWAYS asks his council abt every little thing" So Viserys never wanted to revisit debates abt Rhaenyra's claim and firing Otto for questioning 'The Small Council 101' decision should've been something suspicious abt his character. The show gives me answer (the song of ice and fire). And Rhaenyra's early decision for having bstrds with Harwin (someone he trust), marrying the worst criminal in westeros, keep holding back her action, etc. is suddenly make sense to me

a monarch doesn't normally retire. They haven't done so in the real world until the 20th century, even then there were a lot of problems (Edward VIII). Declaring Rheanyra queen while he was still alive would only start the civil war earlier, or threaten her power due to others stirring up rebellion in his name. He could take the black, but that is a horrible fate for a Targaryen.

People forget that when Aemonds had his eye taken (he was probably 10 at the time with Aegon being sixteen or fourteen) Viserys already showed signs of senility. His state was only worsened by the constant use of poppy milk that i am sure make him go by withdrawls that worsened his health (when Lyonel Strong was hand Viserys was still very much clear of mind, but then Otto came back...) He loved baby Aegon, he loved all his kids, but he had more time to bond with Rhaenyra.

I paused it on 'We have f***ing dragons' and his face did not disappoint 😂👌

Well they do have one: Viserys can name whoever he wants but the law states male line take precedence. It was by that very rule that he was crowned and Reanys wasn't. They can just write it off as, "The poor, mind-addled king spouting nonsense." Which is kinda what The Greens went with.

As true as that is, he couldn't openly admit that without causing more doubt on Rhaenyra. He needed to make sure people thought he had chosen her without a second thought. Of course, people will still doubt her simply because she's a woman, but her father backing her rule so openly would at least hush the whispers to some degree.

Viserys may be a soft spoken man but he’s still a dragon

I understand that a lot of people see this as Viserys standing up for Rhaenyra but he really isn’t. Viserys in this scene was a drunken ill man that finds himself unworthy to be a king. He believes that he is weak and therefore he thinks that everybody else finds him weak. This is what causes him to keep Rhaenyra as his heir, because going back on his designation of an heir is a sign of weakness for him. If Viserys didn’t think so little of himself, he wouldn’t have kept Rhaenyra as his heir and the following civil war would never have happened.

Imagine instead of him we got another Tywin 😂😂

He knew that changing up the succession too much would cause chaos and destabilization. So he stuck by what he said. They had already changed the succession once.

Jason was lucky that Tywin wasn’t around yet, he would have had Jamie beat the living piss out of him for this absolute fail 😂

He didn't want to say that in case Rhaenyra died or abdicated from the throne. If he has deemed his children unfit to rule, Daemon would be in the running again. It wouldn't matter how many times he said it, though. People still saw Viserys as touched in the head for naming her heir and continuing to defend her (especially her obviously illegitimate children). The same people that have turned against Rhaenyra in the show would have done so either way. Now if Viserys had done a better job being a husband to Alicent and a father to their children, things would have been a lot different.

I don't recall reading anything in lore that said Jason Lannister was a frightful hare and egotist. I know, nothing is known of him and there's the artistic liberty and driving the plot etc. but I just find it regrettable that they often have to make a very wealthy character a pompous fop if nothing canon is known of them, as if opulance is a given disposition. I just hope Tyland, whom we do know is a certafied hardcore man in lore far more like Tywin, isn't misrepresented. So far he doesn't seem his book self.

After all of their posturing of strength, when two decades basically all the dragons were dead and four generations later they facing blackcurrant rebellions

See this is why naming Rhaenyra was stupid, as soon as he had a son everyone FAIRLY assumed the boy would be named heir because sons succeed fathers and that’s how it’s always been. Even without the hightowers scheming and Rhaenyra being a stupid slut there would still be a war, all it would take is one ambitious lord convincing Aegon to push his claim as rightful heir and there would be a war because no medieval lord would want a female ruler.

And some people think the Green's only took what was rightfully theirs. No. Visery's told them all TWICE who the next Queen would be.
