King Kutter finish mower gets new wheels and full maintenance

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The weather is getting better and I know that the grASS is going to grow like crazy so I took part of the weekend to get the old King Kutter finish mower ready to rip! It needed all new wheels, cleaned, greased and blades sharpened. I ran into trouble with the new wheels and had to do some extra work to get them to fit in the old spindles correctly. Now this thing is as good as new again and rolls on the grass Cadillac style!

Check out my Amazon link for some of the tools and other cool junk I use. I get a super small part of the sale, so small that I probably can't even buy a fast food hamburger from the sale, but I figure it's worth a shot. I update this page every once and a while, take a look!

Your model may be different from mine but getting the belt under the gearbox was my biggest problem. I had to remove the four bolts through the deck, prop the gearbox and mount up on two 2x4’s, push the belt under the pulley, and say lots of bad words trying to get the bolts up through the holes, hold them in place to start the nuts, and hold them while I tightened the nuts. I had the gearbox off to turn it upside down to dump the oil and water because there’s no drain hole. While it was out I used it to position the two bolts on each side and welded a 1/4” x 1’ strap between each set of side bolt heads. Much easier to get in and no problem with the bolts turning while I tighten them up. Also, the threaded bolt tensioner with the spring is “pushing” against the belt tension. When the deck rusted and I welded in a new section with a slot, something changed and it kept throwing belts. I added a piece of 2x2x1/4” angle and a 1/2” bolt that pulls against the tensioner. I welded a nut nearest the pulley and then had to grind it to get the belt through the gap. I made the hole for the 1/2 bolt too tight and I had to remove the idler pulley to install the bolt. If I did it again, I might weld the bolt to the tensioner or just thread it into the nut and drill for a cotter pin. Hopefully I can attach photos. Nope!

Oh man, that sounds like the EXACT same deck I have! I had to do the same thing with mine, It was a nightmare to say the least. I too have an adjustment so that I can keep the belt at the right amount of tension. Made all the difference in the world for sure! It's a good mower though now, have had it for a long time and it just keeps going and going... Thank you for watching!

Update: When the deck rusted out under the tensioner, I welded in a piece of 1/8” plate. I thought it wouldn’t matter much to the belt path. Wrong! It threw belts more often than before so I had to go back and heat the area and hammer down the new deck addition to bring the tensioner back to original height. Not pretty.

I have the same deck. I am just finishing up completely rebuilding it. New spindles, the same wheels you have, blades and all new idler pulleys. The deck and gearbox are all that is original. A lot of work but it will be better than new. Also, completely repainted it. Good video.

@@BarnStangz yeah, I messed it up when I bought it. It has been sitting for about 5 years. I have about 600.00 in replacement parts....but, still cheaper than a new one.

Hey thanks for watching! So... I didn't have a part number, I just jumped on eBay and searched for new wheels for the 72 inch king kutter. I'll post an Amazon link below, this looks like them: amzn.to/3EIJkH9

Nice video. I am about to replace my air wheels with hard wheels. Can you or your viewers please tell me the v-belt number on a king Kutter FM-72-Y mower? Not sure if it calls for a single v-belt or a double v. I really don’t know the difference. Thanks, again great video,Larry

Thanks for watching, my mower has just a single belt. Still going strong after all these years!

Good one, nice editing and flow, entertaining all the way through. Thats so annoying that that bearing was too small. Nice tractor...

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, I've almost come to expect stuff like this when working on equipment... I talked with the seller and they are sending me out a new pair of bearings, which is nice. So at least I'll have a spare set, I'm sure the bore job I did will be fine. I'm glad you liked the video, I look forward to more content from you as well, time permitting of course. I wish I had more time to make videos, it's fun!

Thanks for the informative video. I recently picked up a FM-72Y, and it appears to be the same model you are servicing in the video. Do the blade bolts on this one have right or left hand threads?

Thank you for watching and nice comments, I appreciate that greatly. The threads are reversed on mine, so you have to toss your impact in reverse to get them out. Make sure you grease everything up really good and maybe replace the belt and blades, you should be good for a long time. They don't make 'em like this anymore!
