King Charles III attends the 200th anniversary 2023 Lonach Gathering & Highland Games in Scotland
His Majesty King Charles III attends the 2023 Lonach Gathering and Highland Games at Bellabeg in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This was held on Saturday 26th August 2023 and marked the 200th anniversary of the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society.
His majesty King Charles III was greeted with cheers from the crowd and Piper James Cooper. He was welcomed to the Games by the Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire Sandy Manson and members of the Lonach Highland and Friendly Society, including Patron Sir James Forbes and Secretary Lauren Johnston. His Majesty then watched the magnificent parade of the Lonach Highlanders as they arrived at the Games for their opening march, led by James Wilson-Mitchell on his bicycle and the Lonach Pipe Band, with Socks the Lonach horse bringing up the rear.
Afterwards His Majesty walked around the Games, meeting contestants in the events, starting one of the running races, and was introduced to Drum Major Neil Jamieson and Pipe Major Michael Laing of the Lonach Pipe Band, who led the morning march and parade. Afterwards His Majesty was introduced to members of the Grampian Games Committee of which Lonach is part and then members of the Lonach Highlanders and Society.
His Majesty was wearing a Balmoral tartan kilt and was presented with a cap by the Society patron Sir James Fobes of Newe.

I love every chance of seeing the Lonach Highlanders marching and the sound of the pipes and drums. I am so pleased His Majesty King Charles 3rd was able to attend. Constable Mitchell and Socks just are the icing on the cake!

It's a tradition of Scotland, not of the UK. (The UK consists of 4 countries: Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland). This is a local Highland Gathering taking place in Lonach in the northeast of Scotland. There are many Highland Gatherings across Scotland taking place throughout the summer. The bagpipes, the kilts, the sporrans, the headgear (blue bonnets or bonnets with chequered bands, feathers or sprigs of heather) and the weapons (the design of the pikes and the basket hilts on the swords) are all Scottish designs dating back centuries, most to even long before the UK was formed. Pipe bands of the Scottish regiments are involved in UK celebrations like royal jubilees, funerals or coronations. But you will not see anything like these gatherings in the other parts of the UK.

I had a look at their channel, the descriptions are written by someone whose native language is not English. They post "royal news" from around the world. There was nothing political in my comment. If someone had posted something about Morris dancing and said it was a UK tradition, I would have said, no it's an English tradition, because it is. Facts are facts.

You can tell Charles is part Scottish you can tell how much he loves all things scottish. He loves meeting people too, and hes very good at making people feel happy and uplifted. Just look at the interactions with everyone and see.

She came from an ancient line of Scottish nobility but she and her immediate ancestors back to the 1700s were all born and raised in England and married English people. They had ancestral estates in Scotland but hardly spent any time there, basically just holidays. Their lives were centred on London. Charles, on the other hand, spent 6 years in Scotland at school, which is why he has a completely different attitude.

It's to keep the haggii away. When a haggis hears the pipes it burrows underground heading in the direction of the food tent to steal anything it can get it's claws into. A hungry haggis is a dangerous beastie.

My what memories..the Braemar games in 53/54 were very wet. I remember the day as no one was allowed to leave before her late Majesty.. Protocol..The gates were closed and we, the crowd, got very wet. That was the day my father, until then a monarchist, gave it away as did many other Scots..👵🏴
