2018 Lonach Highlanders Gathering return march through Strathdon to Bellabeg, Scotland (4K)

The 2018 return march of the Lonach Highlanders through Strathdon in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, during their annual Gathering & Games.
The highlanders, led by retired Police Officer James Mitchell on his bicycle, the Lonach Pipe Band and supporting Drum Majors from other bands, set off back to the village of Bellabeg, stopping occasionally for hospitality. At the rear is Socks, the Lonach horse, ready to pick up any stragglers.
The Lonach Highlanders are all descendants from the Forbes, Wallace and Gordon clans, represented by the different tartans, who march with their weapons, including pikes and Lochaber axes. After the morning march through Strathdon, they gather at a hall for lunch and then march back to Bellabeg to enter the Highland Games arena.

    I note that several men are wearing medals upon both their left and right chest. Those on the left being their own awards and those on the left those of their father. A grand tradition of service.

    Scotland need to preserve Scottish indigenous languages (Geelig,Scot) those are ,belong to my opinion , the real core of the Scottish identity ;beacause , if you think about ,the bagpipes comes from the Roman period and the modern Kilt "skirt" was invented by an english man .

    The Lonach Highlanders are NOT anything to do with the armed forces . They are more a society to promote highland dress and the Gaelic.

    No. Their (The Scottish) Grandchild will regret the decisions of their forefathers as the majority of the younger generations wanted to remain in the EU. As a Welshman who's country relies on the EU so heavily I am ashamed of the decisions of our forefathers (The majority of pro-leave were 50+)

    Samuel, I regret to say, I am ashamed of you. I'm a Texan. Read our history and see us now. We are the freest, richest and one of the most powerful states in the US. Neither Scotland nor Wales will, in my opinion, ever match that and are much better off as part of an independent Great Britain than they are in the failing globalist EU. I proudly stand by what I have said. With all my heart I say, " God Bless Great Britain! " and God unravel the EU. Make European countries Great again.

    The clans have been marching for generations and only descendants can participate. The biggest clan is the Forbes, but there are also Wallace & Gordon men here. They march as their ancestors would, with historic swords, pikes and the Loacaber axes, designed against cavalry attacks. The officer on his bicycle is a more modern touch, until the 1960s the march used to have a police escort on his bicycle, but then cars took over escorting the parade, but when this local officer retired he asked to do this one last time, they appreciated it so much he was asked to keep going every year and accepted.

    The Lonach Highlanders are a 'Friendly Society' as opposed to a military unit. They march once a year to celebrate the beginning of the Highland Games at Lonach on the 4th Saturday of every August. The head of the unit is a member of the Forbes Clan, and most members of the unit are Forbes men, however members of the Wallace and Gordon Clans, both common locally, march along seperatly in their own tartans.

    Ahhh, a far away fantasy, to be there, that exact region - Strathdon, that weather, the scent (and of course even with an inexpensive Canon XF705 , shoulder/hand mount stabilizer, Matthew or Black Bear - if just a cheap Black Bear Koala - doorway dolly although that could be walked with just a shoulder/hand mount stabilizer, providing some very good, smooth footage). That WOULD be the fantasy trip.

    Great performance. I'd like to know the name of the Drum Major who is giving the orderes to the others ones. (I mean the one gentleman with the white moustache. The way he marches is far out the most royal. (I'm dutch and don't kno the right words. But I love to see them marching.

    Not military, they are are descendants of the local clans and continue this tradition as generations before them did. It is a cultural and traditional event that has gone on for 177 years, linked to the location and not any individual.

    Keith Donald I know that each clan and regiment has its own tartan. I'm more interested in the pins, medals, crests, and feathers. I heard someone say that the feathers are earned by completing traditional Scottish rights of passage, but I have no idea what all the other little details mean.

    No, it was founded in 1823 as the The Lonach Highland and Friendly Society. It was never a military unit, it's a society to preserve Scottish traditions, in the main.

By referring to the Royals as parasites you are showing your ignorance to the fact that even if you exclude tourism, they still pay more into the system through taxes than they take out. All I know is that I hope the UK will remain as one, our ancestors have died fighting together and I know alot of people now would die fighting together. I hope we can continue as a united kingdom.

    No, although some with the medals are retired soldiers. It's a historical and cultural group, they are all from the local clans and keep their traditions alive, this being the 177th march of the highlanders.

    Going through the comments no wonder why the Scots hate us English .... Makes me sick seeing what is being said about this. My view on this is wow I'm so glad you still have pride and tradition I look back at this dirty trampy side of the island and think I'm so happy for you all do not ever lean the way England has.     Funny thing is thier dress and drill is not really Scottish. The uniforms and marching drill date to the Victorian era and are based on the English army uniforms with tartan added.
