Kindle (2022) Review | 4 Months Later

Ойын-сауық

I've had Amazon's cheapest and smallest Kindle for 4 months now, and I think it's high time I review it. I'll talk about my main use cases for it, how it fits into my reading life as a Booktuber, and whether you should buy this Kindle for yourself. I also discuss the Kindle Scribe, Paperwhite and the Kindle Oasis in comparison.

Great review. I loved how focused on the reading experience it was, rather than on tech specifications that don't mean much at the end of the day. I use (and love) a Kindle Paperwhite, which is fairly similar. However I must say that the warm light makes a massive difference to me, my old Paperwhite didn't have it and now, every single time I use the back light I use it on warm mode, which is so much easier on the eyes. I can't imagine not having it now.

Thank you, glad you enjoyed! I've had the warm light on my old Oasis and have to say I didn't really notice it making a difference. I am planning on trying out a Paperwhite at some point, maybe when the channel gets monetised and it's an investment in my content!

Finally finished this video (had an earlier comment on whispersync). Really good video, Sam. Great real world experience for those wondering about the kindles. I have a few. A Oasis, PW 2021, and a Voyage. I also had a Basic, but my wife stole that one. 😂 They all have their use cases. Oasis is my main, as I love the page turn buttons. PW is often read during the day about the house. The Voyage is my travel/commute kindle due to its size and portability.

Glad you enjoyed! I loved the Voyage, my complaints were basically that it got gross and fingerprinty very easily and the micro usb charger. I am considering getting a Paperwhite, but might wait until Amazon does a new one.

I love immersion reading! I didn't even think that the thing I did was a thing, with a name to it. I'd only done it because my focus can be all over the place, and sometimes a voice as I'm reading along makes it so much easier to shut the noise out. Lately for me, it's my overstimulated thoughts about work, and I just want to leave work at work. But as a preschool educator, my little adventurers are always never to far from my thoughts. I don't own the devices, I do use the Kindle app, between my Android phone & tablet... I have several other apps all for reading a variety of ebooks, and audiobooks... im never without something. So besides Kindle & my physically owned books, I access EVERAND (aka scribd), Audible, Barnes and Noble's Nook app, and an app connected to my local library. Too much!? I think not!😁 📖🥰📚

I’m very happy with my Paperwhite. I still read physical books but when my TBR necessitates reeading a kindle book, I’m amazed at how much faster I read on a kindle then on a physical book, which has sped up my reading on a physical book. Reading on a kindle is so fast that I once read 260 pages in one sitting at night in dark mode, whereas I rarely read more than 40 in a physical book. I bought the paperwhite because it hits that sweet spot of not being too big yet haveng a more than decent screen size. The basic seems great, but the screen size reminds me of too much of a phone and the scribe is massively overpriced in my country (I think it’s around €540 or €550). I also didn’t want to pay for an original Amazon case so I bought a nice one with van Gogh’s “Starry Night” on the cover for €10.

Amazon's cases are a real hustle, I usually try and get the official cases but second hand etc. The Paperwhite does sound great, though I'd need to see if it can fit in my back pocket! The Scribe for sure is mega overpriced. It's a lovely and premium bit of kit, but it feels like we're paying for the R&D more than the device. I managed to get my work to pay for half of it and got it on Black Friday discount!

@@SamHarrison2099 That + if you really are a person who takes lots of notes, which I’m not, though I could see myself enjoying reading on it in landscape mode with 2 columns on a stand, like a real book. As for the Paperwhite, it does fit in a number of jacket pockets, though I always have a shoulder bag with me so it’s enough for me that it fits in there better than a physical book. I don’l like overstuffing my pockets, so a small shoulder bag is an item I often carry around.

When I sold my Oasis.... I didn't mention the battery life either. Simply because: 1. It was operating as it was supposed to. 2. it's not like it drained in "days". I did have some small reservations though.

It's one of those things, the battery life is a known factor for the Oasis. That's the exchange you make, probably the best industrial design and device feel but the worst battery.

@@SamHarrison2099 yeah that really is annoying! I used to have kobo and they were terrible with synching. It’s a pain to try to remember where you were. I usually stop at chapters, so I’d make a mental note of what chapter I stopped at, but sometimes… life. You have to stop in the middle of a chapter and then it’s jump back and forth to find that spot!

Great review! - I have both the reMarkable2 and the Scribe and the 2 things that really annoy me about the scribe are 1. You CANNOT see your PDF annotations on any other device, why - this sucks if you use PDF planners/notebooks 2. You cannot change the template of a page in the notebook, if you want 1 todo page and 1 calendar page and then lined pages? you cannot do it, very annoying. Amazon also haven't released any meaningful updates in 5 months now, so the fear is they have abandoned the device.

  • @SamHarrison2099

I am also annoyed you can't change page style, but getting access to the kindle library kind of outweighs that. I hadn't really noticed there'd been no updates tbh, but I would definitely be annoyed if they dropped it. That would probably push me to switch eReader brands to Boox.

@@SamHarrison2099 Indeed, SuperNote are releasing a new device soon the A5X2 which looks promising, same 300ppi screen as the scribe, even better specs so more responsive and without the Amazon cripple hammer. For me it's likely between that and the Boox, but the Boox seems a bit "clunkly" with its full Android interface.

Hey....Have you been able to gauge your battery life on the Scribe? I have noticed that it dips a little faster than I thought it would. I hardly ever ONLY read on it, so that's probably the problem. But, even when mostly reading it seems to drop a little faster than the Paperwhite, but definitely not as fast as the Oasis.

I don't know if I have charged my Scribe for a month or so. I probably spend... 5-10 hours of meetings making sporadic notes a week and if I am reading a kindle only book I'll spend around 10-14 hours a week reading on it. Though it's very infrequent I read a book that I don't have a physical copy for, just as a factor of being a booktuber.

The Oasis is a lovely lovely piece of kit, I think the Scribe is kind of a different beast? It's like a big hardback Vs a portable paperback. I bought other ebooks but they still didn't work. I checked the app and the rest screen and the covers appear. I've restarted several times.
