Kimberley Strassel | The Resurgence of Socialism Today

The idea of socialism is ancient. Organized socialist movements took form in Europe in the nineteenth century, and socialism emerged as a dominant political ideology in many places around the world by the twentieth century. This second CCA of the 2019-2020 academic year, co-sponsored by the Ludwig von Mises Lecture Series, will consider socialism, its practice over time, and its resurgence today.
Kimberley Strassel writes the weekly “Potomac Watch” column for The Wall Street Journal, where she is also a member of the editorial board. A graduate of Princeton University, her previous positions at the Journal include news assistant in Brussels, internet reporter in London, commercial real estate reporter in New York, columnist for OpinionJournal.com, and senior editorial page writer. She is a regular contributor to Sunday morning political programs, including Face the Nation and Meet the Press. In 2013, she was a Eugene C. Pulliam Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Journalism at Hillsdale College, and in 2014 she was a recipient of the Bradley Prize. She is the author of The Intimidation Game: How the Left Is Silencing Free Speech and, most recently, Resistance (At All Costs): How Trump Haters Are Breaking America.

The fact that the Democratic Party is turning against free speech is not a historical abnormality. Both Wilson (D) and FDR (D) found that necessary to shut up those opposed to Imperialist war. The Palmer raids were started by Wilson. FDR had the 18 leaders of the Socialist Workers Party and Minneapolis Teamsters jailed. Here is the thing about free healthcare and fee tuition - you can tell them that you are going to give them free healthcare but if you look at Europe and Australia and Canada, every country takes a portion of your check to pay for it, similar to how we fund Social Security here. You can say that corporations will pay for it, but corporations never pay for anything, they pass along the costs in way of higher prices of goods and services, which is inflationary. In Canada, you can't even add a premium plan. I looked up the chart once of how much they take out of every check in every country in Europe and I don't remember exactly how much but I do remember that in GB, if you made over 9,500 pounds/yr, you paid something. On the topic of paying off student loans, that doesn't mean that you aren't not paying for it, you will get a huge tax hike to pay off all of those loans that the government just paid off and you will now be paying for everyone else's education for as long as you live so you will pay off your student loan probably 10 times over and you don't get any direct benefit from paying for someone else's education and you have no say in what they study to become responsible members of society yet, you had to "invest" in their education. Socialism takes all choices and all freedoms away.

Zionism and marxism are politics of deception and control, its not their country but they want to hold your country in this manner. Their very first newspaper is Neue Rhenish Zeitung the first fake news newspaper. Its writers are the first generation leftists. They had their Communist Manifesto in London. So knowing this, they should not be allowed to use UK parliament nor US congress to do geopolitics. The sanctions in Iran and Russia must be lifted. Golan heights should be returned to Syria. Palestine should be returned to Palestinians. They should not dictate the policies and politics of Britain nor should you believe the sways of Communist League London. Do not follow the words of those who broke the JCPOA aka Iran Peace Deal. Do not follow the snapback sanctions that they want or lobbying for. So the next year they told everyone to plant their own food. If they don't plant they don't eat. So at harvest time the next year there was plenty to eat. In fact, Maggie planted corn and she had so much that she traded with Tom because Tom grew too many carrots and wanted some corn. The open borders society and alphabet people are the ones who keep lowering wages and environmentally changing people into a subversive bunch of racist fascist who won’t listen to an opposing view and throw temper tantrums when they don’t get their way. They dox people, innocent people and will destroy a person without any empathy for a stupid tweet they made. Capitalism isn’t perfect and there are surely things we can do to make it better. Nobody wants a company like amazon or big tech to hold all the money and power but communism and bigger government isn’t the answer. America is about free speech and liberty let’s keep it that way.

I'm getting a little old and can't really place the 'when', but I remember the ban on Communist Party members, Sympathizers, and Associates, working in our education departments, was lifted. Pretty sure it applied to any government position, but I would appreciate it a little refresher and some discussion on the subject. What I do distinctly remember is the critics warning where this would lead. And here we are. Half of young adults look favorably upon Socialism. We have openly self-declared Socialists throughout our government. We have at least one self-proclaimed Socialist running for President. From preschool to the highest levels of education, we have Marxist ideology being preached to our young. These people used our own Constitution against us, screaming 'Freedom of Speech' and yelling 'Freedom of Association.' Demanding their Civil Rights. Now they use Fascist tactics to shut down opposing Speech and demonize anyone that Associates with people having an opposing, or even a differing view. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't one of the first things done whenever a Socialist/Communist government is established, is to disarm the people. Now we are facing a very well-funded propaganda and Legislative War on the Second Amendment. Ever since the very first (State) Supreme Court ruling - 1846 - Nunn v. Georgia thru - 2008 - District of Columbia v. Heller, there have been concerted and constant attacks on arguably one of The - Most - Vital of our Rights. Failing to gain traction at the Federal level, bottomless pockets are now funding unconstitutional gun control laws on a State-by-State basis. IT IS VITAL TO ANY SOCIALIST TAKE-OVER TO DISARM - ANY - AND - ALL - POSSIBLE RESISTANCE. Don't be fooled! "Common Sense" gun laws have zero effect on criminals, except and making there predatory activities easier. Anywhere outside of the mainstream media, a simple search shows that it is Overwhelmingly apparent that crime is reduced dramatically wherever law-abiding citizens are free to bear arms. "Common Sense" gun laws in the name of Safety, Security for our children, and Crime Reduction, do absolutely nothing positive in reducing crime. The entire movement is nothing but cover, a smokescreen, for the real agenda. The complete Disarmament of the people.... The next step is the establishment of a Socialist government. Please remember, Vladimir Lenin is credited with saying that, "The purpose of Socialism is to usher in Communism." Our battle is against an ideology. A Poisonous and Monstrous Ideology responsible for the deaths of more than a hundred million people in the 20th century. And also try to grasp, to really understand, that there is nothing democratic about "Democratic Socialism." Take a look at "China Uncensored" (KZread) and other channels like it. Search for actual history, not the re-written history being taught in our schools. Search out the origins of "Social Justice." "The Dialectic." Ask yourself "Who benefits?" --- Who benefits if the agitators and promoters of chaos, the instigators of Class Warfare, succeed in bringing about Civil War? Who will be dancing in the streets when we have torn ourselves apart? Who will be jumping in to pick up the broken pieces? Wake up. Please.

The moved the peasant farmers out of their homes which they burned down and into camps surrounded by barbed wire with armed soldiers then the sent a soldier with every peasant who wanted to leave to work in his field. They were constantly in search of weapons because anyone against the South's military dictatorship was an enemy. They were afraid if the farmers had guns they could defend themselves against the US backed military dictatorship.

Not everyone can afford to send their kids to Hillsdale. Many kids live at home, work, and are working their way through local community colleges for degrees in business, STEM, IT, etc. Some are saving money for a down payment on a house or property, instead of pouring out thousands of dollars a year for apartment rentals. One really good arrangement I knew of was where a young man was buying a home and let three other people rent three of the rooms in his house; it meant their accommodations were better and their rent cheaper than if they had been renting other places, plus it helped the young man pay off his mortgage faster. I met a woman in the 1980s who was in her thirties and had a $30,000 debt. Yikes! But at least she wasn't living in her parents' home.

Certainly spending an hour in such talks influences voters to vote against Trump, in New Jersey, blue state, it is futile to think it will change no matter how inept and corrupt the Democrats are, New Jersey is blue, New York is blue and California is blue and by the way one party, forever Democratic tyrannical state, as its energy policies etc.. Anyway it was a pleasure to watch your very precise and clear speech. I stopped buying New York Times but i still keep buying Wall Street Journal, because they are not totally liberal yet.

  • @duanehamilton496

Excellent speech, I think it was spot on. I have a few thoughts on what was said. I think that institutions of higher learning should be relieved of their monopoly over our educational credentials. Benjamin Franklin was sent off to be a printer's apprentice when he was around 12. Through his own efforts, he rose to be a highly educated man. Thomas Edison had a third grade education, Henry Ford had a sixth grade education. People like these changed the world. As it is, people without the store bought credentials are often dismissed. Elizabeth Kenny, a lowly Australian bush nurse, came up with superior treatments for polio that was dismissed by doctors with their university degrees for decades. This caused many to be unnecessarily crippled for life. There should be another path to recognized academic achievement without the left wing indoctrination, add ridiculous cost.

Death panels. I recall a story not too many years ago about an English couple who's infant son needed dire treatment. Their medical people wanted them to let their son die. The couple learned about a new experimental procedure available in the U.S. that might help their son, and they were prohibited to travel. Time was of the essence. The parent's went through all the appropriate channels, but their pleas to help their son fell on deaf ears. It was a huge story at the time. Lots of protests...offers of financial assistance. I think it ended up being a dead-end and the baby died.

@ socialism saved capitalism? 2008? It was government and bad monetary policy that led to the whole sub prime fiasco. What actually happened was that capitalism wasn't allowed to thrive and then then Congress blamed capitalism and offered socialism as a solution. Which of course, did nothing except create the illusion of a recovery.

Thank you. I never considered getting involved in my college’s politics or those my children attended. Two are well beyond their college years, both strong Texas conservatives when they went in and confused leftists when they got out. My youngest just started and, this time, I spent a great deal more time talking with her about politics, liberalism vs conservatism and the total lack of objective thought in most colleges today. Her first class was a culture class that she earned a 75 on her first quiz because some of the fact based definitions she used weren’t the specifically provided liberal definitions. So concerning. I want her to remain strong in her well founded political understanding, but I also don’t want her to be bullied and shamed and driven out of the higher education and professional career she is striving for. A real conundrum.
