I started wearing my kilt at home on "casual" fridays. Then I wore them when we invited people at home (they are great to protect from the bbq heat). Then I went to some festivals and pubs ... (my father is a pipe player, so the kilt was something I knew as a child ... and on my bachelor party before marriage everyone was wearing a kilt it was a great memory to keep, what a party !)

I've gotten a ton of mileage out of my kilt. I've worn them to clubs and a block party. I'm brand new to kilts and I see myself becoming a "serial kilter" and "full tilt kilter" very easily. I've learned a ton about kilt etiquette and history from these two gentlemen. Great videos.

I took the leap by bringing my kilt outfit to my nephew’s wedding. I didn’t bring a back up suit in case I wanted to bail out of wearing the kilt. I gave myself no other option. By forcing myself into my own decision, I became liberated.

What did your nephew say?

I don’t have any direct heritage to Celtic culture. It’s at least six generations for me before I see anyone on that side of the Atlantic. But we do the renaissance festivals, and here in Texas, it gets very warm and humid in the spring. A kilt was the best idea. What got me into full-time serial kilting was my prostate cancer. At some point, it was simply more comfortable. That was five years ago.

Earlier this month I hiked 12 miles up and down a mountain in a kilt for the first time. It was exquisitely comfortable and I want to wear one on every hike henceforth.

at 30.10 you nailed it - this is who I am like it or lump it- The ability to do what you want when you want without care for the opinions of others -- this I s the truest and greatest freedom we can ever attain- love the channel and greetings for SW PA!

My moment was entering into the Scottish Rite (2018), then KSA recruitment soon after. Learned about my Scottish heritage soon after that (Smith, Stewart, Wallace), then the pandemic arrived in 2020, I was sheltered in place with family and realised why I felt so comfortable as a boy wearing towels after a bath/shower around the house. Kilts are my default daywear now and my family has accepted it though still think it's a bit weird though I'm also an artist so there you go.

The best show that I have seen from the two of you yet. It's great seeing people enjoy their kilts and not having to conjure an excuse, just simply enjoying the extreme comfort.

My reason was for Crohns disease. 😔 I stepped out in the world with HIGH anxiety but I was pleasantly surprised by the positive response. I can't say that I have ever had a negative response or comments. 1 or 2 Odd comments but can't say they were negative per say.😎

I wore a kilt to my brothers memorial golf outing one year,and played 18 holes in it. I should also mention that the outing was sponsored by a fantastic Irish pub in north Jersey.(Thatcher McGhee’s). I was the only one wearing a kilt but I didn’t care. I had always wanted to do it and I know my brother would have gotten a kick out of it😃

As a Senior Patrol Leader of a Wood Badge course, I got a MacLaren kilt (Wood Badgers will understand that) to wear to bring something spacial to the course. I had to make a non-trivial effort to be able to wear it, since 100% uniform compliance is mandatory as a Staffer. There was alot of nervousness the opening day of the course, but within the first couple of hours and positive comments, it all went great thereafter.

@@WH6FQE I started roughly at the same time, maybe a few months in between. I certainly got way more into pipe smoking in the past year or so due to lockdowns and not dressing up at all. Still plenty of kilting though!

I recommend Fandabi Dozi. He just did a 4 day Highland hike.

I always wear Kilts. So I still wear them when I pick wild forest Mushrooms or fishing, camping, hiking, hunting or foraging in deep wilderness. I prefer Kilts for everything. 😎

10:20 in yours video… I have been used to wearing a kilt since I was a young teenager. For years did traditional Irish dance, and because of my Irish (mostly) Scot heritage, when wearing one it’s just the same as when I wear my jeans 😁. Thank you for the great videos you guys publish here.

Best episode so far. I think videos like this can go a long way in promoting your product line. I would be curious to know the tartan weight, yardage, tartan pattern, and type (casual, semi-trad, etc.) used in the filming. If there is one thing seriously lacking in the website and the studio videos, it is getting feel if you will, of how different weights and class of kilts preform without handling or wearing the fabric (swish, drape, thinness, etc.) Try to envision yourself never having worn, handled, or even seen tartan in real life. Now visualize how inadequate the website or studio videos can be in choosing the right model or weight of a kilt. If it is not too far, I would encourage you and your crew to take a trip like this once a week or every fortnight to produce a quality video that will give both you and your crew a reset in nature and an opportunity to create more quality content for your customers to be able to determine what type and weight of kilt is right for them. I even found the colors of the kilts much easier to determine based on familiar background of natural habitat than in a studio because no one knows the true color of the man made objects in the shot, whereas in contrast to nature you can make a true representation of color from memory. I would be curious to know what camera you used. Beyond finding it difficult having to get used to letterbox style, I found the video quality and production superb. I really enjoyed this video because nature truly is healing to the soul and the kilt goes hand in hand with the aspect of freedom and connectedness to the self. I hope some of this information helps you, help us.

And the great kilt? The original ,outdoor, one piece, multi-temperature garment. Oh! and it's your night time blanket as well! (double layer wool). I think it should be promoted more, in temperate climes, as a hiking accessory.

My last camp was in a great kilt. Once I got it all setup properly, it was nice and warm. I'm considering adding a few ties to make wrangling it all easier. I used a poncho overhead, an air mat underneath and used a lightweight reflective bivvy - that unfortunately wasn't wind proof.

Since my first foray into kilting (Utilikilts, and now one of your wool kilts) was hiking and walking outdoors ... I absolutely loved this show! One of your BEST! More? Dunno, but I heartily recommend any "newbie" to "Go Outside". No Scotch needed, but coffee and water don't hurt. :)

This is a great discussion. When people ask me why I'm wearing a kilt (I just ripped the bandaid off at the beginning of this year), my brain shorts out because there seem to be an infinite number of reasons that I'm continuing to wear them. My initial spark, however, was to feel more primal and also express myself as a non-conformist. My answer to why I wear kilts has become, "why would you wear pants if you didn't have to?" I have a reduced ability to disperse body heat, so in Florida, kilts have kept me from overheating. Also, they reduce my sensory processing issues I have with typical clothing. I also get to discuss scottish heritage with strangers and, as an anthropologist, that's fun. So many good things come from kilt wearing.

Hi! Fellow SAR here. It’s very cool to see someone else putting so much into the fiber importance in the wilderness. Here, we have a lot of granite. It soaks up heat. We end up with quite a few heat casualties, which I noticed are almost all women. They tend to wear modern gym clothes (aka…wrapped in compressed plastic..). Heat above, heat injected upward and wrapped in plastic is a recipe for disaster. I hike and SAR almost exclusively in my kilts or 18th century skirts. As a woman, usually surrounded by men teammates and in uncomfortable temperatures; I like not having to bare my bum to potty on the trail. I feel like I have a wee bit more privacy. lol Hiking in kilts is a game changer, there’s no going back from.

There is something so special and amazing about those East coast woods. One of the few things I miss about the North.

Great episode fellas. Taking Rocky’s question around 9m in, what was the first time you went ‘Bam. I’m doing this’ was Saturday last, my (almost ex) Father in laws 75th birthday. Big day long thing, I was working til five thirty, dashed home and had been thinking for days about putting on the kilt with a fairly relaxed rig, black combat boots and black hose, but not pulled up, no flashes but an antler skian dubh. My Lochcarron weave Scott Ancient Green kilt, black day sporran and belt and a dark blue, Superdry long sleeved T-shirt. The other part to that question, what made you do it? It was you and Eric. I wore my kilt in a very formal setting just the week before, for the absolute first time, to a fairly traditional Scottish wedding, ( Im from the borders but my partner is Scottish and it was her cousins wedding!) and that was good, but didn’t have the ‘pucker factor’ because almost everyone there was in highland dress. This was totally different, and did feel exposing although I didn’t go ‘commando’ to either event. But I get where you are coming from. It’s a complicated thing and there is a lot to unlock, but I’ve started my ‘journey’, in large part thanks to you two guys. So, thank you 🙏🏻 ☺️

The sound of running or flowing water and to a slight extent a roaring fire is similar to the soothing sound we heard in the womb of our mothers blood circulation around us. There are other reasons for that to be relaxing like you mentioned but I think the root is from the time in the womb and it just doesn’t go completely away. Like how a fussy baby will be soothed by the sound of radio static or a running vacuum.

This is what I should be doing today (instead of stuck in the office). Wrap my butt in some checkered wood (or polyvisc.), head off into the mountain trails and enjoy the Colorado weather. By the way guys, this has been one of the most enjoyable videos that you have posted.

I wear a wool skirt over my long johns when I go hiking in the winter in the Rockies. It's so much warmer than pants.

Hiking in a kilt in New Mexico: sports undershorts to keep the bugs out of where they shouldn't go spelunking. High top boots to help against all the rattlesnakes, etc. (Every weekend, they're carrying somebody down that didn't have a snakebite kit.)

I’d think the enjoyment we get from things like running water and fire speak on how both water and fire are pretty necessary for human life, even at it’s most basic. As for enjoying birdsong, when birds are quiet it can mean there’s a predator nearby, while birdsong means your tiny ‘lookouts’ don’t see any cause for alarm. This is also why so many horror or suspense movies use the sounds of birds flying to build tension. All your ‘lookouts’ fleeing an area can mean very bad things for you so we’re programmed to not enjoy the sound.

I got into 16th cent. Highland re-enactment back in 1996, first dressing in Irish-style "leine" shirts before getting my first 7-yard kilt that fall. Of course, this was perfectly timed with my troupe visiting a renaissance faire in Las Vegas...let me tell you, being part of a squad of guys (yes, we also had women along as well) walking down the streets of Vegas in kilts was a high point in my life. As for the woods, I've done events where my "camping gear" was literally my kilt used as a ground pad and a wool blanket over me...it's both comfortable and a source of pride to be able to wear my "bedroll" as clothing during the day yet sleep warm and comfy that night.

Great discussion. I hike in the kilt all the time and have done since my early 20's. Now 55 I will continue to do so. It's way more comfortable than trousers.

I wear the kilt for many reasons, heritage, I like the look, and I wear kimonos so prefer unbifurcated clothing; much more freedom overall not just for the wedding tackle

My wife and I always celebrated our Anniversary at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. It was just a matter of time and we got her a nice regalia outfit. My heritage is with Clan Fraser so I had to have a kilt so I started with a lesser kilt that I pleated myself. Last year I got a light weight great kilt. Now it's my new normal!

Rocky mentions what "the moment" was for kilting up. In a word, COVID. My initial motivator was to really go all in for the Renaissance Festival since COVID canceled it in 2020, but the desire to really get out there and have fun with life, plus literally wear a conversation starter to connect people in the real world is what is causing my closet to slowly but surely fill up with kilts :)

My first leap was a party where we came in what our ansesters would wear so i hired a kilt in my clan and spent an hour befor facing the party in nearviouness, 2 weeks id be buying a utility kilt for work though id never go commando when at work for HR reasons. In a weeks time ill be ordering my 1st traditional one and a casual one as ive just loved the transition and never looked back.

There is just something else about wearing a kilt in nature, with a pipe and a scotch by the camp fire, it hits different

I applaud you for wearing the kilts out and about. I have taken to wearing breechclouts and leggings about a year ago (self made) and have been looking at kilts lately. I’m waiting and thinking about getting a tradition kilt soon.

I also wear the leggings and breechclout in the woods. As well as the great kilt. Focus on the early 18th century. The clothing like shirts, waistcoats, jackets. Is mostly the same, longhunter/colonial 7 years war, and Jacobite era highland wear. Get 41/2 yards of good 16 to 20 Oz twill woven pure wool cloth. 55 to 60 inch wide. All you need for a great kilt.

I know where you are coming from about starting to wear a kilt not because I own one but because of my brother. We have ancestry back that way and he bought one. He used to go to the highland games a lot and he wanted one for going to the games. He never worn it not even once. He was just too nervous I guess. For me it was a big money thing. They can be on the bit pricy side for certain clan kilts. However, for the outdoors they remind me a lot of tarps. I say that because of versatility. You take a tarp and you can hang it in multitude of different configurations depending on the type shelter you need. With a kilt you can take the excess that normally would go around your shoulder and use it as a backpack, as a jacket or even as a blanket. So you can take a kilt and make different uses of it for minimalistic gear needs for hiking and camping. Back a long time ago a kilt wasn't so much for looks but a use for utility. No planes, cars or trains so you were walking out in the wilds to get to places. So the kilt protected you in many ways and in your bag you would have a fire starting device and some oats. Oats because you could pack a small amount and make it last for a good while for making meals. Lots of interesting stuff to be sure.

Love y’all’s channel, I’m a SAR field leader, and wear wool trousers for SAR. I was raised wearing the kilt for holidays/ special occasions. A note about synthetics as a fabric nerd, I don’t know much about your particular blend but shooting off the hip from other recommendations I’ve heard from y’all about hiking in the synthetics machine washable one, is that synthetics unless their specially engineered (REI type brands) to be breathable and moisture wicking it’s not an ideal performance material. General rule of thumb if it’s not engineered it’s much like plastic wrap, ergo very little to no breathability. Given the nature of the garment that may be less of an issue, but around the middle it can cause heat rashes. (Heat and moisture trapped anywhere against the skin = not so great) I would go for wool 🙂. 🤣 for the splint flexible Sam splints are always a good choice 👍. A great shirt that would look snazzy for hiking with the kilt, a Pendleton woolen mills merino wool shirts (airloom weave).

It's great to see the comments like yours. I have put on quite a bit of weight (medical issues) and surprise surprise, barely anything off the rack fits. Especially, if you tend to toss aside anything labeled "100% polyester" and the like - that REALLY narrows down the options. I love linen and wool, recently discovered tencel and other engineered cellulose fabrics. Thank goodness these are a bit trendy, so something can be found. Have loved merino for hiking for years, but with it being on the trendy end of the spectrum I needed to move to mens shirts to find something that fits now that I plumped out of fitness girl size chart... Out of desperation I picked up sewing classes, with the thought if I sew it, it will fit me. And I can feel better paying for pricier fabric since if I were to lose the darned pouch eventually, I would also know how to alter the clothing to adjust the fit. I was mostly thinking day wear. But seeing your comments - OMG, the possibilities! I could actually make natural fabric hiking clothes that fit! Hiking pants!! Or heck, might go for a skirt 😁

Bought and wore my first kilt at a Celtic Festival, an Amerikilt. Prior to that, I was wearing tights at Renn Faires. Now it's a kilt, which my wife prefers. Have no Celtic heritage (step-grandfather who was of Welch ancestry and was at one time married into an Irish family). Been wearing them to various events since. Except when sailing. Don't think climbing around on boats in a kilt would be appropiate.

LMBO 20:20 on with the Scotch. I'm putting together my own kilt and accessories and along with the kilt and sporrans... I have put in a 1 oz hip flask and it has a small hook,small enough to hook to the chain of the sporran. I'm currently waiting for the socks and I have already got the sock holders thingies. I'm US born mexican ; half white from both sides tho making me half white ;(long story details) all I know I have is mestizo white with native American & German from my mexican mother....anyway from time to time I've seen random red hair grow on my forearms and my beard, my aunt from Mom's side did DNA and they found Britain or UK not clear.... maybe I got Scottish somewhere??? I do like Scotch more than American whiskey (yes even more than Jack Daniels) so maybe 🤔... Kilts and outfits are for anyone who likes it !!!!!

You can tell they are not hard core AT hikers, beaus they don't have an old army blanket and shower curtain . "age of 67, Emma Rowena Gatewood became the first woman to hike the entire 2,168 mile (3,489 km) Appalachian Trail -- wearing sneakers and carrying an army blanket, a raincoat, a shower curtain, and a change of clothes in a homemade bag which she slung over one shoulder."

Good video! Due to practical concerns I live in the suburbs of a big metropolitan area. The sports parent and football-party-in-the garage-on-the-TV just isn't my lifestyle. I don't do basketball shorts and t-shirt. So, I probably dress and act a little weird, kilt and not a big socializer and all. That's okay. I can't get used to the suburbs so they will have to get used to me. The woods and mountains are my places to decompress. I own being introverted. There are those of us called HSP, or Highly Sensitive Person, who process all of the input from others and environment differently from the other 90% of the population. We're not "in our shells", we just overload sooner than others. We limit out and have to retreat. So please, recognize that "in the shell" can mean different things to different people. I'm not trying to put anyone on the defensive here, just speaking out for the largely unrecognized 10%. Thanks. Respectfully posted.

I was concerned about you guys crossing the rocks. I was wearing my utilikilt in San Francisco when I stepped into a tree planter turned my ankle and fell then rolled over on my back and my kilt was almost over my face. Thank God I was wearing underwear, red silk boxers, as it could have been more embarrassing than it was. Of course nobody offered to help me up. You need to come to Palm Springs in your kilts (not in the summer) and hike in the desert.

Not to mention most cruise ships if anything happens, it would be very difficult figure out what laws apply if any..

Can you recommend a kilt that is best suited for hunting in fall and early winter?

I hunt in a 5 yard heavy 14 or 16 weight for the kilt, injinji sock liners, and tall thick knit hose, 8" or taller boots. I wear a duluth trading shawl neck sweater with under layers unless it's wet then it's fleece. I upland hunt in mine but will be on a fall bear hunt this year and possibly a deer hunt if the kids don't want the tag. As long as I'm moving or in the sun I am more than fine. The biggest thing is to think about your activities and weather. I don't want to gut big game in my kilt or trudge through knee deep snow etc.

The belted plaid, absolutely. It will keep your entire torso warm, and it's a built in emergency blanket.

My first kilted time in public was supposed to be at a brewery the day before St Paddy’s. Plans changed on the way there and we ended up going to a nice Italian place. Oops

Unless there are subtle but important differences, it looks very similar to British Commando sweaters I've seen.

Lovely episode. Pants are overrated.

My wife said I should, "cuz they're hot" and so I did. I've no one else that I'm concerned with impressing. So, I guess you could say she was the jumping off point.

A kllt would be great during the hot Alaskan summer, to keep cool. But I wouldn't like the ten thousand mosquito bites on my nuts. I have a sure fire way of keeping the bears away. Doesn't require a kilt, but a set of bagpipes will scare off every bear for two miles. Even along a fish creek with dozens of bears along it, a couple of tunes on the pipes and you won't see one again for days.

We always referred to the mainstream "Boring" "Normal People" as "Mundanes." These were and are like The Dursley's from Harry Potter, scoffed at anyone or anything different from their idea of "Normal hum-drum living." A good example of this is anyone from Gahanna, Ohio where I grew up and went to school. Needless to say, these people and their tepid, still-water behavior, bored me to death! They even rolled up the sidewalks at 6:PM on Saturdays and left them rolled up on Sundays! So, naturally, later in the seventies and eighties, I started a Star Trek Chapter there being a huge fan of the show. We were often seen publicly in full uniform as we recruited at the Gahanna, Whitehall and Continent Movie theaters, and took part in their parades in full uniforms. "Put-Put Golf" outings, "Lazer Tag" and "Maltz after Midnight" runs all in full uniforms. We did a channel 10 Food Drive parade and commercials for WOSU Channel 28 for their sweeps month! We even had a booth at Vet's Memorial for a United Nations Festival representing the future of the United Nations evolving into an United Earth and a United Federation of Planets all in full uniforms. We got on the local news many times and we were recognized all over the Columbus and surrounding areas. I only wish I could have known about my Scottish heritage back then, in the seventies. I would have come out in full Tartans as well starting with my High School Senior Prom. Obviously I had no problem in being a "Peacock" and standing out, not to mention acting out. I was always looking to rock the boat with the Mundanes as much as possible and in any way I could. I am and still currently remain the only person in Gahanna history to be pulled over and sited by a Gahanna Police officer, (Blue Meanie) for breaking the speed limit on a ten speed bicycle on Granville Street! Thanks to Officer Shepard, (The a-fore mentioned Blue Meanie) for making that possible! Which I later fought and beat it in Mayor's Court! Thanks to Attorney Ray King, (now retired) for making that possible. (I found out some twenty years later that he still talks about that, referring to it as one of his more interesting and entertaining cases.) I still take great amount of pride in all of my accomplishments in spite of what the Great teaming hoards of Mundanes in Gahanna, Ohio might think of it! It's hard to fly with the eagles when the "Mundane spider-monkeys" are always trying to drag you down! Now, in 2021, as of about three years ago I found out, to my great pride, that as a result of a very informative and educational visit to The Ohio Renaissance Festival, (where I had been going for many years) and then by further, more in-depth internet research on my part, I found out that I have Scottish heritage on both sides of my family. Both are Highland Clans, MacLean on my Dad's side and Smith on my Mom's side. To my even Greater Pride I found out that both Clans were and are still listed as members of The Clan Chattan Confederation with smith through Clan MacPherson, who, with many other Brave Highland Clans, fought as Noble Jacobites in support of the cause of Bonny Prince Charlie at the Battle of Coloden Moore in 1746. I recently turned out in my full MacLean tartans and went to Gatsby's, a bar in Gahanna on St. Patrick's day, just for shits and giggles, and was an instant hit. Most were buying me drinks all night and asking me to sing Paul McCartney's "Mull of Kintyre!" Which thankfully I knew. Now I'm looking forward to making a road trip out to Spring City, Penn. to visit you all as soon as I can pull things together enough here to be able to "Play" a bit and put in an order for a few items while I'm there. For now though, all I can do is plot and plan for what I hope will be a really good road trip and a fun visit. Until then; KEEP ON ROCKIN'!!!

Regimental (or Commando) means wearing your kilt without any kind of underwear, shorts or tights under the kilt. You are completely naked under the kilt.

And yes, regimental is the correct term. It's only a regulation for the Scot serving in the Royal Regiment of Scotland in the British Army. That started due to chemical warfare in WW1 and doesn't apply to anyone else wearing the Kilt unless they are comfortable doing so. Saw a poll recently, about 70% of Scottish men who wear the kilt admitted to wearing underwear of some variation. In this day and age, to avoid harassment charges, it's probably the smart way to go. That is, unless you are hiking, easy trails/paths, or you're home. Just a thought. But ultimately, it's your choice to make.

@@la_old_salt2241 Somewhere in the back of my aging brain is a note that there were gas "bloomers" issued to kilt wearers to cover any skin that could be exposed to gas, such as the legs, knees, thighs, and so on up. I can't find the reference - yet.

I definitely enjoy the comfort I experience while wearing a kilt but I think the biggest reason I wear one is because I want equality for men! Women can wear whatever they want and nobody thinks twice but as soon as a man wears anything other then pants or shorts he instantly gets a response, I’m working to eliminate that.

Belly band, particularly during cooler weather. You can wear a t-shirt as your base layer and then a sweater or sweat shirt over that, a waist length jacket works also if you don't mind not taking it off. Good luck, Rob

Oh, I love wearing my kilt commando. I love the feel, but I also love the fact that it is not something of that isn't normally done. The feeling of breaking the social boundaries is the best feeling ever. The only downside is the chaffing of my balls and legs. Also, having to take a piss or shit is very convenient. All you have to do is lift the kilt. No nee to mess with zippers and belts. All you have to do is lift and do what you need to do.

A kilt is an article of clothing,not a costume!

Watch out for the Squirrels hunting and foraging for their nuts, or yours!
