How to Handle Kilt Lifters

What do you do when someone tries to lift your kilt to do a "kilt check"? Let's face it, they are usually drunk.
How do you set the boundary and make sure they know it's not okay to grab under the kilt?

I was wearing a kilt at a convention. As I was standing there talking to someone, a young woman came from behind me and said to me "You're a cheater. You're wearing shorts." (Which I was, just for this very kind of circumstance). I responded to her, "You're a cheater too, you're supposed to buy me dinner first before you look."

I was living in North Dakota a few years ago, and every year in the town I was they have a St Patrick’s day event. So me being an actual real life Scotsman living and working there, though yeah, good opportunity to wear the kilt for a day. So we’re in one of the bars, and there are a bunch of women standing staring at me and my kilt. One of them comes over and shows me her t-shirt which had the logo ‘Official Under Kilt Inspector’ on it, and so she asked if she could inspect what was under my kilt, I replied ‘Well isn’t that something, I just happen to be an official ‘Breast Inspector’ so if you’ll let me examine your breasts, I’ll let you examine what’s under my kilt. She said ‘You’re disgusting!’ and stormed off. I’m guessing the irony was lost on her 😂😂

It's ridiculous that loads of women in Scotland think it's Acceptable. I personally don't want the Law to protect me, I would like it kinda old school. So for example if a guy done this to a girl then he should get a slap and it should be the same the other way round, after all it's all about the equality!

Trust me doesn't stop them, I wear a kilt regularly on Bank Holidays in Newcastle-upon-Tyne of all places and get a lot of people wanting to see. They fail to see it's inappropriate and an invasion of privacy, if I wanted people to see my tackle I'd get on a table and dance not stand there and present arms like in carry on up the Khyber. Pissed people are the worst especially women who feel they have a divine right to see what under a guys kilt.

I've seen plenty of videos of people somehow thinking it's funny to go over there and disrespect left and right. Especially when it comes to the palace guards. It may not be my country, but still respect needs to be shown. That's a soldier on duty. As a veteran it heats me to see these idiot tourists thinking he is a joke of some kind or that they should have any right to put their hands on them or get in their face. I say these soldiers should in turn have a right to knock em on their ass. I understand discipline or "keeping your military bearing" as we call it here, but that doesn't mean tourists get to do whatever they want and these guys just have to take it....or it shouldn't mean that.

ALWAYS alcohol-related! I once had a girl ask me what did I wear under my kilt? So I said boots. She laughed, we dated. Another time, same bar, a drunken girl, and by drunk I mean POLLUTED, actually tried to raise my kilt, so I stopped her by grabbing her hand and saying no, she tried to make light of it at which point I said this "Ok, I know you've had a few drinks and you're in a playful mood and this all seems really fun, BUT please consider this, how would YOU feel if a drunken man tried to do the same thing to you and after you stopped him, brushed it off saying "don't be so stuck-up?" Seriously, how would you feel? Now ask yourself what did you just do and what does that make you? She came up to me a few weeks later and apologized. Sometimes you just gotta turn that double standard shit on its head.

Amen Brother! They (Women) are far too used to playing the double standard on us and they do it so very willingly, without a second thought at all! Without any concern at all about how we would feel about it! No, they only want what they want! It seems pretty selfish and single minded doesn't it? It's sad how some of them actually think they are entitled and have the right to act this way! It is a symphony of poetic justice when we can turn that around and give them a taste of it. Then they have the out right nerve to be offended when we say no! I wonder how much it would piss them off if we hauled them into court and sued them for public sexual harassment and they had to do some jail time as a result. There is a time and place to air a man's Nessie; A public place like a store or a bar is not among them. The thing is, a lot of guys would be game if not for the lack of discretion and judgement on her part. Besides how would she like it if he was drunk and did that to her? Now I'm sure many Women will howl over this, well you all have been screaming for equal treatment (Rights) for years now! Of course I do understand the female idea of "equal" as the one that gives them the advantage. (Not so equal!) Well, here it is! like it or not this is it! Since no one will listen to "Thumper's Rule," (Remember that one?) here's a new one, like it or not; "If you don't like the way the boot feels when you are kicked with it, then don't put it on and kick anyone else!" P.S. I'm not sexist, or racist, I just call it like I see it! I don't care if you like it or not! But I am fair about it. If it offends you then GOOD! That just means there's something not right about the way you are thinking! Best to reassess your values and thinking, or get some professional help!

I've gotten more than just a few "Whatt's under?" and lifters over the last 10 years of wearing kilts daily. SO here's a list of my usual answers: Nothing is worn, everything is still in perfect working order. All the nasty stories you can only read about on the internet. Good girls don’t ask and fun girls already know. Sean Connery's answer -- On a good day nothing but lipstick. The loch ness monster. Why, Did something fall off? If you don’t know by now, it's definitely time to have the birds&bees conversation with your mommy! A lady doesn’t ask and a gentleman doesn’t tell! If you were man enough to wear a kilt, what would you wear under it? Can you keep a secret? Yeah, so can I. Why would you ask anyone about their underwear? Got warm hands? Answers are free, demonstrations are gonna cost you. Depends… not the adult diapers, but on the situation. What’s under your pants/dress/skirt? A blue ribbon.

If asked, I'll usually answer one of two ways, "I'm naked under all my clothes", or, "How cold are your hands?". On one occasion, as I was waiting for the valet to bring my car around, a couple got out of their car and the husband asked, "What do you have on under there?". I replied, "It's funny you should ask, because I'm usually asked that by women, and a few gay men". He turned beet red and his wife roared with laughter! As for the lifting, I once had an unknown woman come up behind me and lift my kilt up over my head. Not much I could do but curse her and tell her that if I should ever see her in a dress, I'll do the same to her; and probably get arrested.

I was in a pub with a couple of mates and I was aware of the chatterings of a group of girls at a table behind me. "Go on then." Giggle giggle, giggle giggle. She plucked up the courage and began to advance toward me from the table they were sat at. One of my palls was also aware and tried to tell me. "I know, it's OK, just ignore her." Although she was behind me I knew exactly what was happening, I made no reaction at all, just stood nonchalant with my pint chatting to my palls who were agog at what was happening. Well the back of the kilt began to rise and with no reaction from me she was committed to continue. Slowly up went the kilt until there was a litte shriek and the kilt was dropped. Her mates fell about in gales of laughter. I turned and gave her a grin and a wink.

Being of scots-irish descendant, I have no issue wearing a kilt, and my family clan tartan...but in reasonable situations...such as Scottish or Celtic or ren faires, or for "dress up days". At work one year, the manager said we employees could dress up for Halloween. So I went dressed fully in my Kilt. One female coworker was just dying to know what was under my kilt. When asked, I told her "I take the 5th on the grounds it may incriminate me". For a while I took her jeers, but at one point she just...went too far. I was sitting at the back desk and she literally got down on her hands and knees and tried to look up my kilt as I sat there. I firmly clamped my thighs together, and with sporran on, I knew she'd not be able to see...one way or another...IF I was wearing anything or not (lol, and I'm NOT saying!!). As she got up, she said to the other ladies "he's gotta be wearing underwear! I can't see anything!" I just said "how rude. Would YOU like me looking up your skirt to see if you were wearing underwear??!!" She turned beet red and stomped off. I mean, really! To a guy who wanted to know what was under my kilt and was trying to look, I said "well IF you look under there, and 'something comes UP, you're going to have to take care of it'...he said "gross". As he was walking away, I said "so was you trying to look up my kilt!!". Mind you, these were SOBER people...so they could not pass it off as 'being drunk'. Wear your kilt with pride!

I remember talking to a man at a dance festival who was selling various tartan-related merchandise and of course wearing a kilt. He got "the question" on occasion. His response was along the lines of "you are welcome to look and find out for yourself but you have to do it right here." He was in a busy hallway so lots of people would have seen what was happening. He said nobody had ever taken him up on the offer. This felt to me like a good way to diffuse the situation without being rude to a potential customer, but at the same time to take back the power in the interaction and subtly tell the person that it was not an appropriate question. That said, this only worked because it was a setting without alcohol and where the fact that it was a community dance festival meant that there was a good bit of pressure to not act like an idiot in front of people might know you. Also, since it was a dance festival it was maybe less likely that there would be people there who really didn't understand personal space (such people usually get weeded out pretty quickly in the dance world, at least in my experience). It also took a certain amount of nerve on his part since someone might actually have taken him up on the offer but I also would not be surprised if he had shorts on underneath, just in case.

Upon being asked: give them The Look and a slow head to toes and back survey and then respond: That is a presumptous question! and continue with the stare until they either apologize or slink away. If a hand goes to or towards kilt: LOUDLY: What the hell! Get your hands off me! at the top of your voice. Do make the scene. Public shaming works. BTW, If someone puts you in fear of some attack, that's assault. They don't have to touch you at all. If they touch you, that's battery. They tend to go together in rapid sequence. I'd argue an univited hand on your kilt is battery. In either case it's no joke and offenders earned being publicly shamed. Cheers!

When I was first going through college, I wore my kilt for St. Andrew’s Day. A buddy of mine was actually angry that he could see the bottom of my athletic britches. It didn’t matter how many times I explained that one of the stairs is horizontal only and that I would’ve been arrested if anyone looked up and saw my blue ribbon bessie, in his mind there is exactly one way to wear a kilt and that is IT. That same day, someone else asked me if I was supposed to have a knife in the hose. I told him the name and function of the Sgián dubh, and how even showing a sheathed knife is a felony on a school campus.

The best is when my wife hears the question. She is quick to respond, "Lipstick" There are a probably two dozen joke responses to the question. "Nothing is worn, everything is fine working order", "The same as most people, boots socks", "What is worn under a Scotsman's kilt is between him and his lover" etc. (edit: see 'Teds Canoe's list further down for a starter) If I catch them attempting a kilt check before the kilt is lifted, and I have time and inclination... I'll teach them how to do a proper kilt check, which starts with consent and maintains consent throughout and doesn't involve flashing anybody. I like people and most "kilt checkers" are more drunk than ill intended or bad people. So I don't mind doing a little education. If they are intentionally rude or aggressively drunk, I'll definitely get the bar/event staff to deal with them.

My experience in the Army was a little different. It was only acceptable before parade or in the mess, and limited to proving for drinks (anyone wearing would buy a round). With civvies, my favourite answer was "Boots, spats, and skean dhu." It helps is you add a bit of sinister at "skean dhu." Formal guard posts, such as quarter guard, royal, and vice-royal guard, there are guards for the guards. There is always some idiot who grabs your kilt, and it is not polite to come up to the engarde.

I know this is 4 years old but. I stood guard outside my local pub during the Millennium in full Highland rig. I was quite prepared to do a Carry on up the Khyber drill for all requests. For a shot of rum of course.

I found some bright red undershorts with big white hearts on them!!! These have become my standard kit when performing because I've discovered that some older ladies in senior centers or retirement homes have absolutely NO shame! I am pretty much a "serial kilter" and don't find the "shockshorts" necessary when out in public.

I experienced this in both ways being asked first to see and also just a random person lift my kilt from behind. In bars I understand the playfulness of individuals drinking having a good time and those have been more respectful easy to dealt with it is those random on the street people. At an outdoor festival some guy asked if he could see under my kilt and my reply was a polite No than he processed to ask if he could put his cell phone under and take a picture. In my mind it was like what the hell kind of thing to ask a stranger. More than once on the public streets in Philadelphia during street fairs I have had women lift my kilt from behind in very public settings with crowds of people around. They believed it was cute and for some reason because I was wearing a kilt it was okay to expose me. It was a violation of my person space and I did not find it cute at all. One actually put her hands on my ass. What I find funny if you were to turn around and do that to them and they would freak out. It is extremely disrespectful touching someone in that manner especially a person you do not know. Does not matter how a person is dressed you do not touch.

When taking Scottish Country Dancing lessons, the sweet Scottish lady who was our teacher suggested that the men wear black Speedos. One of the guys asked if she had recommendations for the women. She blushed, but had nothing more to say.

As a worker at a Rennissance festival I prefer my kilt on hot days and in the last few years I have taken to wearing a wood sword or something similar in a hanging scabbard from the back of my kilt to counter such an issue and prevent a reverse Marilyn Monroe moment

many years ago when I was much younger and still went regimental I had 2 ladies lift mine in a crowded outdoor pub. Many children were about. I never went regimental again. The thing is, if we weren't in public i was single. If they asked...

My very first time wearing a kilt I was at a popular resort area in florida. There is a irish pub there. Some college age guy asked me what was under my kilt. My instant response was his mom's lipstick holder. I don't put up with kilt lifting regardless of gender.

I'm paraphrasing but Sean Connery's response to a kilt lifter was a gentle swat and "it's too early for that now ".

Back when Hong Kong was being turned over to the Chinese, there was a change of command ceremony with kilts. A puff of wind came along and showed the soldier in all his glory. So proof of what is worn under the kilt, at least in the British Army. Also, legend has it that there was a mirror at the door of the barracks so the Sergeant could check that the soldier met uniform regulations.

Military regulations is where the public gets confused. There is no such reg for joe q public. Why didnt traditionally Scots not wear underwear? Because it wasnt practical. Today is a different story and only military has that regulation.

I wear a Utilikilt to work, and I've had coworkers ask about what I'm wearing, if its in the vain of am I following dress code I tell them I'm following dress code otherwise I tell them that technically sexual harassment and if they don't want a sit down with HR to stop asking. When its out of work I remind them of the flipped scrip. I'll ask them "Hey, is that appropriate if you asked a woman?" Had a guy respond with "well that's different" "Is it tho?" "well yeah we're both guys" "But is it still appropriate?"

I quit wearing my kilt because of local very constant wind. I had a woman, in a pub well in the arms of Bacchus, ask me what I was wearing under there. I told her a lass wouldn't care, a lady would ask, and a woman would find out for herself. It is my experience that if you've got the attitude to wear a kilt, you should have a sense of humor. I don't like dealing with drunk boyfriends or filling out police reports, so I've found it helpful to disarm the situation with humor. "Buy me a pint and I'll let you look." "I'll let you look if you show me your tits." I'm not comfortable going "regimental" anyway, so their look is cheap.

I’ve never had anyone actually lift my kilt but been asked numerous times “if it’s true what you don’t we’re under your kilt?” My reply is always while laughing, a Scot never reveals his secrets and that usually ends it there. I just think especially in the US it’s just innocent curiosity and nothing else and maybe a way to be able to ask a few questions about my clan tartan and crests worn with the kilt

here in Scotland, males usually only wear a kilt to Scotland football/rugby games or weddings in the event that some of these participants find themselves in a bar or club later in the evening, then the lassie's will always be keen to introduce themselves to big boaby and the twins,it won't take long to pull when you have the canny kilt on

As someone who works a renfaire I prefer a witty response when someone asks, a more severe verbal/physical response when someone actually tries to lift. Touching me is assault. I am a strong proponent of publc shaming.
